BABY CHAIR-BED Filed June 27, 1960 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR. Jar/z we; 4M;
United States Patent chusetts Filed June 27, 1961' Ser. No. 39,145 8 Claims. (Cl. 297321) This invention relates to a novel baby chair-bed and more particularly to improved construction permitting the device to be selectively disposed in a plurality of positions.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a baby chair-bed which can be selectively disposed in an extended bed position, a folded chair position, and at least one intermediate reclining position. Further objects include the provision of improved construction for baby chair-beds and the provision of positive locking means for selectively locking the chair-bed in a plurality of positions. Other and further objects and advantages will be apparent from the following more detailed description and by reference to the accompanying drawings which illustrate one embodiment of the present invention and wherein:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the baby chair-bed showing the body-support in a reclining position;
FIG. 2 is a view, partly in cross-section, of the chairbed as seen along the line 22 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a view similar to FIG. 2, but with the bodysupport in an extended bed position; and
FIG. 4 is a view similar to FIGS. 2 and 3, but with the body-support in a folded chair position.
Referring to FIG. 1, the chair-bed illustrated comprises opposed parallel side panels and 11, body-support means including a back rest member 12 and a seat member 13'pivotally connected by hinges 33 which fold along an axis 14 extending transversely of the side panels, fixed U-sha ed brackets 15 and 16 interconnecting the side panels 16 and 11 for maintaining them in spaced parallel relation, means adjustably supporting the back-rest and seat members as hereinafter described, and a U-shaped bracket 17 pivoted to the side panels for locking the bodysupport in a plurality of positions. Members 12 and 13 can comprise any suitable material, for example, pressed fiber, and are covered with a conventional cushion pad 18 shown in broken lines in FIG. 2. Side panels 19 and 1 are also preferably covered with a decorative and cushioning material in a conventional manner.
The support means for the body- support members 12 and 13, together with the locking means therefor are illustrated in FIGS. 2-4 in the reclining, extended bed, and seat positions respectively. While, for clarity, these figures illustrate the structure associated with a single side panel 19, it should be understood that the structure associated with the other side panel 11 is identical therewith such that the unshown half of the support structure is the mirror image of the structure shown.
First and second brackets 19 and 21), respectively, are secured to the back-rest member 12, the second bracket 21) being secured to the member 12 adjacent axis 14-. A third bracket 21 is secured to the seat member 13 by means of L-shaped clips 22. The brackets 19, 2t and 21 are rigid U-shaped members, the base portions of which are secured to the body-support members by rivets 23 and with open ends provided with pivot pins 24, 25 and 26 respectively. While brackets 19 and are mounted with the base portion fiat to the back-rest member 12 and bracket 21 is mounted with the base portion on edge to the seat member 13, it will be obvious that any of the brackets may be mounted flat or on edge as desired.
The linkage supporting brackets 19 and 20 comprise a rigid member 27 riveted in a fixed position to the side member 11 by means of rivets 28. Two radius rods 29 jecting portion (not shown) of member and 39 are pivotally secured to the member 27 by means of pins 31 and 32 respectively. The opposite end of radius rod 33 is pivotally secured to the pin 25 of bracket 2% while the free end of radius rod 29 is pivotally secured by means of pin 34 to links 35 and 36. The opposite end of link 35 is pivotally secured to the pin 24 of bracket 19, while the other of link 35 is fixed to the pin 25 carried by bracket 2%. It will thus be noted that the bracket 19 is pivotally supported by the radius rod 29 and link 35 which are pivotally interconnected at pin 34. It should further be noted that while bracket 20 is supported by radius rod 36 and link 36, as preferred, both of these elements are not essential and either one or the other would suffice.
The locking means comprises a U-shaped member 17, the open ends or arms of which are pivotally secured to the side panels 119 and 11 respectively. In FIGS. 2-4, arm 39 of member 17 is shown pivotally connected to side panel 1% by means of pin 40. Arm 39, and its identical opposed arm (not shown) thus comprise interconnected radius rods pivotally secured to the side panels. Arm 3% is provided with a notch 41 (FIG. 4) and is bent to provide a shoulder 42 disposed transversely with respect to the side panel 10. Notch 41 engages a headed stud 43 afiixed to radius rod 37 selectively to lock the chair-bed in the extended bed position (FIG. 3), the chair position (FIG. 4), or the intermediate reclining position (FIG. 2).
While the locking arm 39 is herein shown as the arm of a U-shaped member 17, the opposite arm of which is identical thereto, it will be obvious that a single arm 46 and 47 at opposite sides thereof. Legs 46 and. 47
serve to support the chair-bed while the centralportion 45 of member 15 and the correspondingly upwardly pro- 16 constitute carrying handles.
While one embodiment of the present invention has been illustrated and described, it should be understood that the invention is inclusive of all modifications and equivalents falling within the scope of the appended claims.
