Description

1963 M. A. GOWDEY 3, 06,398
POLICE WEAPON 1 Filed Oct. 18, 1960 ATTORNEY United States Patent This invention relates to police weapons, and more particularly to a new, novel and useful hand gripped club for the use of police and other peace officers in maintain-' ing law and order.
An object of the present invention is to provide a handheld weapon projecting only a short distance each side of a hand held in a tight fist; so that a disorderly person cannot grab the weapon away from a peace officer.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a hand-held weapon with a friction holding surface so as to prevent the weapon from being forced out of the clenched fist of a peace oflicer.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a police weapon which is useful for police ofiicers trained in kendo, a branch of jiujitsu, a Japanese system of defense and offense.
And still'another object of the present invention is to provide a police weapon which solidifies the fist in which it is held to increase the effectiveness of a punch.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a police weapon which gives a feeling of being stabbed by an ice pick when in fact the weapon will not penetrate the flesh.
And a further object of the present invention is to provide a police weapon which can be used as a pressure point applying instrument against a bleeding vein or artery to stop bleeding and which in conjunction with a shoe lace be used as a tourniquet in an emergency.
Other objects of the present invention will become apparent in part and be pointed out in part in the following specification and claims.
Referring to the drawings in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the new and improved police weapon.
FIGURE 2 is a side elevational view, thereof.
FIGURE 3 is a transverse cross sectional view taken along line 3-3 of FIGURE 2.
FiGURE 4 is a right side elevational view of FIG- URE 2.
FIGURE 5 is a side elevational view similar to FiG- URE 2 showing a modified end on one end of the police weapon.
FIGURE 6 is a view similar to FIGURE 2 showing a modified end on one end of the police weapon. 7
With reference to the drawings, reference character 10 generally designates the new and improved police weapon consisting of a rod of any geometric cross section but illustrated as being round and having a roughened handgrip section 12 of a diameter to be comfortably held in the clenched fist of a man. The roughened section 12 extending in length the approximate width of a peace otficers fist.
Opposite ends of police weapon 10 are formed into similar contours consisting of smooth surface portions 14, 15 which terminate in annular groove sections generally indicated by reference characters 16, 17 of any suitable shape but which preferably maybe V grooved with sides having approximately fortyfive degree angles extending in depth to approximately half the diameter of the circular rod. The angular sides of V' grooves 1-6, 17 are separated by a base area 18, 19 respectively for for purposes which will presently appear.
Patented Oct. 8, 1963 Adjacent said annular groove sections 16, 17 the rod terminates in sharp edge portions 24, 25 which define the outer terminus of said annular groove sections 16, 17 and points 28', 21 of conical form.
FIGURE 5 illustrates a police weapon having a single working end.
FIGURE 6 illustrates a police weapon having a screw thread 38 in pointed end-20A.
In use the weapon may be carried in the pocket of a police ofiicer, ready for instant use. The weapon is grasped and held in the fist of a law enforcing ofiicer. The point Zti or 21 of the weapon may be forced and held against any one of the numerous pressure points or nerve centers in the human anatomy such as the arm pit, tendons, medulla, ear lobe or ear crown, upper lip, clavical, etc. The weapon is substantially concealed in the hand so as to present an element of surprise to the culprit.
The ends of the weapon can be used to grab and hold the culprits clothing or it can be forced against the flesh either in the form of pressure or in the form of a blow. In the hands of a kendo expert it converts the hand in cooperation with the thumb, into a claw for grabbing and holding a culprits clothing, limbs, ears, lips or nose. The base between the V groove sides provides an area in which the necessary amount of clothing can be forced and held.
. The screw thread FIGURE 6 on one end when forced into clothing and turned will grab and wind up clothing to provide the peace officer with a firm clothing hold.
' Having shown and described a preferred embodiment of the present invention, by way of example, it should be realized that structural changes could be made and other examples given without departing from either the spirit or scope of this invention.
What I claim is:
1. A police weapon comprising a rod substantially round in cross section and having a knurled hand-grip section extending in length the approximate width of a police officers fist and of a diameter to be held in a clenched fist, opposite ends of said rod, adjacent said knurled section, terminating in V grooves having sides of approximately forty-five degrees extending in depth to approximately half the diameter of the circular rod with a base separating the sides of the V grooves, opposite ends adjacent said V grooves terminating in points having sides of approximately forty-five degrees.
2. A police weapon comprising a rod having a roughened hand-grip: section of a size readily grasped by the hand, said rod having portions extending beyond the hand on each end of said weapon beyond said roughened section, each end terminating in an annularly grooved section, and a circular sharp edge portion which defines the outer terminus of said annular groove section, said sharp edge portion tapering to a point of conical form.
3. A police weapon comprising a rod having a handgrip section of a size readily grasped by a hand, a portion of said rod extending beyond the hand and terminating in a substantially V sided groove having a base, an angular face forming a medial sharp point and a sharp edge in conjunction with one side of said V sided groove and a screw thread formed in said angular face.
