BOILER ELUE CLEANER. E E v No. 310,549. Patented Jan. 6, 1885.

JAMES VOOINVORTI-I,
OF NUNDA, NEXV YORK.
BOlLER-FLUE CLEANER.
SPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,549, dated January 6, 1885.
Application filed May 12, 1884. (Xo model To all, whom zit may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES R. Wooowon'rn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Nunda, in the county of Livingston and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BoilenFlue Cleaners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my i1nproved steam-boilerflue cleaner, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, showing it inserted into the end of aflue, the flne-sheet and fine of the boiler being shown in section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
My invention has relation to that class of line-cleaners for steam-boilers in which steam is injected into the flue, carrying the soot and dust away; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings,'the letter A indicates the flue-sheet, and B one of the lines; and the letter 0 indicates a funnelshaped nozzle adapted to be inserted into the end of the flue, and provided with a tube, 1), projecting from the inner side of the aperture E in the end or apex of the cone, which tube has a longitudinal slot, F, and two lips, G, at its rear end. A tube, H, having a handle, I, at its rear end, and having a T-joint, J, in1- mediately in front of the handle, which joint is provided upon its laterally-projecting arm with a hose, K, communicating with the boiler and carrying steam from the same, slides with its forward end inside the tube projecting from the inner side of the nozzle, and has a screw, L, near its forward end, which projects up through the slot in the nozzle-tube,
sliding in the same, and serves to prevent the sliding pipe from sliding too far into or out of the nozzle-tube. A spiral spring, M, is
wrapped around the sliding tube to the rear of the nozzle-tube, bearing with its forward end against the rear end of the nozzle-tube, and hearing with its rear end against a collar, N,
secured adj ustabl y, by means of a setscrew, 0, upon the sliding pipe. A handle, 1?, of any desirable non-conducting material, is secured upon the sliding steanrtube, and a stopcock, O, is immediately to the rear of the said handle, and is provided with an arm, R, to the end of which a eonnecting-rod, S, is pi"- oted, the forward end of which connectingrod is pivoted between the lips upon the rear end of the nozzle-tube. It will now be seen that when the funnel-shaped nozzle is inserted into the end of a flue, and the steam-hose is connected with the boiler, the stop-cock which prevents the steam from passing out of the steam-tube may be turned by pressing the steam tube into the nozzle -tube, pressing against the spiral spring, which will cause the connecting-rod to turn the arm of the stopcock rearward, opening the cock and allowing the steam to rush out through the nozzle into the flue, cleaning the same. hen the pressure upon the handles upon the steamtube is released, the spring will force the steam-tube rearward, closing the stop-cock, and it will be seen that by adjusting the collar, against which the spring bears, upon the steam-tube, the tension of the spring may be increased or decreased at will.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In a flue-cleaner, the combination of a tube having a funnel-shaped nozzle at its end, and having a longitudinal slot, a stea1n-tube having a handle at its rear end and at its middle, having a hose connecting it with the boiler, and having a screw at its forward end, sliding in the slot of the nozzle-tube, a stopcock having a projecting arm, a connectingrod hinged or pivoted to the arm of the stop-cock and to the rear end of the nozzle-tube, and a spring bearing against the rear end of the nozzle tube and against an adjustable collar upon the steam-tube, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
, 1n testimony-that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto aiiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AMES R. "WOODIVORTH'.
