Description
Sept. 24, 1963 G. F. LAHlVE ADJUSTABLE PAINT BRUSH HOLDER Filed March 20, 1961 INVENTOR. GORDON F. LAHIVE dlfi TI'ORNEYS United States Patent Ofi ice 3,104,762 Patented Sept. 24, 1963 3,104,762 ADJUSTABLE PAM BRUSH HOLDER Gordon F. Lahive, 538 Cambourne W., Ferndale, Mich. Filed Mar. 20, 1961, Ser. No. 96,835 1 Claim. (Q5. 211-65) This invention relates to an adjustable paint brush holder which is adapted to be mounted on a leg of an artists easel. More particularly, this invention relates to a paint brush holder having a horizontal support base adapted to be removably connected to a leg of an easel and a receptacle for paint brushes adjustably connected to the support base and movable relative to the support base throughout an angular range of approximately 180 degrees.
In the past, various paint brush holders for artists easels have been proposed. However, such holders were generally fixed to the leg in one position. Since an artist utilizes various standing or sitting positions when painting, it was found that the prior art paint brush holders were either in the way or not readily accessible to the artist.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an adjustable paint brush holder which is especially adapted for storing an .artists paint brushes and which is adjustable i'or the convenience of the artist.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an adjustable paint brush holder which is adjustable throughout a substantial angular range so as to permit the artist to move the holder to a position which is readily accessible, depending upon the position of the artist While painting.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide an adjustable paint brush holder for an easel comprising a horizontal support base adapted to be connected to a leg of an easel anda conically shaped recep tacle for paint brushes which is adjustably connected to the support base and movable relative thereto throughout a substantial angular range.
A further object of the present invention is to provide .an adjustable paint brush holder having a horizontal support base adapted to be connected to a leg of an easel, a movable horizontal plate having an opening therein, adjustable fastening means connecting the plate to the base so as to permit angular motion between the plate and the base, and removable means on the plate for supporting a receptacle in said opening.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide an adjustable paint brush holder of the aforementioned type in which the support base is also adapted to carry a second receptacle which contains cleaning liquid for the paint brushes.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a novel and useful improvement in connecting the support base of 'the paint brush holder to the leg of the easel.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide an adjustable paint brush holder of the type described which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to assemble and adjust, and which is also efficient and durable in use.
Other objects and features of the invention will become apparent as the description proceeds, especially when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, illustrating preferred embodiments of the invention, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view illustrating an adjustable paint brush holder mounted on a leg of an artists easel.
FIGURE 2 is a plan view of the adjustable paint brush holder.
FIGURE 3 is an elevational view, partly in section, of the present invention.
FIGURE 4 is a modification of the present invention illustrating a novel manner of connecting the support base to the leg of the easel.
FIGURE 5 is a partial elevational view looking in the direction of arrows 55 of FIGURE 4.
FIGURE 1 illustrates an easel 10 having a plurality of legs 12 of substantially rectangular cross section. The easel 10 includes an artists board 15 appropriately mounted a predetermined distance above the ground. On one of the legs 12 is mounted an adjustable paint brush holder represented by the numeral 14. The paint brush holder 14 may be mounted on the easel in one of two different ways, as is illustrated in FIGURE 3 and in FIGURES 4 and 5.
The adjustable paint brush holder 14 includes a substantially rectangular horizontal support base 16 which has a perpendicular flange 18 at one edge. The mounting leg 12 has a clip 20 Which is appropriately connected to the leg by fastening means 22 including a bolt 23 and nut 24. After the flange 18 has been inserted behind the clip 20, the adjustment nut 24 is rotated in a direction so as to urge the clip 20 against the flange 18, thereby securing the support base 16 in a relatively fixed position. At the outer end of the support base 16 is provided a fixed pivot member or connector 26 which extends upwardly and is used for a purpose to be herein vafter described. Mounted for angular rotation with reference to the support base 16 is a horizontal mounting plate 32 having a cylindrical opening 34 therein. The plate 32 is provided with an elongated longitudinally extending slot 36 which is adapted to receive the pivot member or connector 26. Adjustment of the plate 32 horizontally with reference to the support base 16 takes place :by loosening a nut 30 threaded upon the connector 26, moving the plate 32 to the desired angular position, and tightening the nut 30.
A conioally shaped receptacle 40 made from appropriate fabric material is supported by means of a remov- Iable annular ring 42 which is concentric with the opening 34 and is supported on the plate 32. The receptacle 40 has at the large open end thereof an outwardly turned annular flange 46 which is received in an annular groove 48 provided on the inner periphery of the ring 42. The ring 4-2 may be made from suitable material such as plastic and provides the necessary support for the recepttacle 40. The ring 42 is removed along with the receptacle 40 by merely lifting the ring 42 and receptacle 41 from the cylindrical opening 34 provided in the mounting plate 32.
When in operation and it is required to change the position of the adjustable paint brush holder 14, all that is required is that the wing nut 30 be loosened and the plate 32 and paint brush receptacle 40 rotated to the proper location. As previously mentioned, the plate 32 is adjustable through a range of approximately 180 degrees.
It should be observed that the support base 16 has located near the mounting flange 18 another cylindrical opening as designated by the numeral 50. The opening 50 is smaller in diameter than the opening 34. The opening 50 is adapted to receive and support a removable cup 52 which contains liquid cleaning fluid for the paint brushes 54. The cup 52 also serves as an abutment for limiting the angular movement of the plate 32 in each direction to degrees.
When the plate 32 and receptacle 40 are in the position illustrated in FIGURE 2, it should be observed that the perpendicular distances measured from the axis A-A to the side edges 54 and 56 of the plate 32 are equal, as
represented by the letter X. It should also be noted that in FIGURE 3 the distance between the center line of the connector 26 and the adjacent edge of the opening 59 is also equal to X. a a
From such a geometrical arrangement, it readily appears that the edges 54 and 56 will strike the cup 52 when the plate is rotated toward one of its extremities.
If the cup 52 was not utilized, then the plate 32 and receptacle 40 could be moved through a substantially greater angle than i180 degrees.
An expa-nsible clamp 62 including elongated arms 64 and 66 is adapted to extend partly around the leg 60, :as is best illustrated in FIGURE 4. Arms 64 and 66 are provided with aligned holes for receiving a threaded connector 68 which extends therethrough and through an opening provided in the flange 18. A wing nut 70' is threaded on the outer end of the threaded connector 68 and is adapted to be rotated in a manner so as to fasten the flange 18 and arms 64 and 66 together.
The support base 16 and plate 32 may be made from steel or from a plastic material. Alternatively, the base 16 and plate 32 could be made from steel wire so as to provide the necessary adjustable support for the receptacle 40. The conically shaped fabric bag or receptacle 40 is made from cloth. The conical shape of the bag 48 is important since it permits the paint brushes '54 to separate from each other, as illustrated in FIGURE 3.
From such a construction, it appears that the bag 40 can be easily removed from its support and collapsed for storing or shipping along with the base 16 and plate 32.
The drawings and the foregoing specification constitute a description of the improved adjustable paint brush holder in such full, clear, concise and exact terms as to enable any person skilled in the art to practice the invention, the scope of which is indicated by the appended claim.
