-H. RIEGER.
'LAMP WIGK CUTTER AND CLEANER.
No. 310,466. Patented Jan. 6, 1885.
Inventor,
H227? rich Bi By /2l.5' .fll'lomey UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEO HEINRICH RIEGER, OF AALEN, TURTEMBERG, GERMANY.
LAMP-WIOK CUTTER AND CLEANER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 310,466, dated January 6, 1885.
Application filed June 18, 1884 (N0 model.) Patented in Germany September .23, 1583, X0. "215,4:9, and in France February 5, 1881, No. 160,135.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HEINRIOH RIEGER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Aalen, in Viirtemberg, Germany, have invented a new and useful 1m provement in Wick Trimmers and Cleaners for Argand Burners, (patented in Germany September 23, 1883, by Letters Patent No. 26,489, and in France February 5, 1884-, by Letters Patent No. 160,136,) and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact specification of the same.
This invention relates to that class of mechanical devices designed for cutting the wicks of lamp-burners and cleaning the wick'tubes; and it consists in a combined wick-cutter and cleaningbrush adapted to be conveniently used for evenly severing the charred edge of the wick in an Argand burner, and cleaning the walls of its central air-passage or throat, and for removing the severed particles from the burner, so that they shall not clog the latter, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
A sheet of drawings accompanies this specification as part thereof.
Figure 1 of these drawings is a side view, and Fig. 2 a top view, of my improved wick trimmer and-cleaner for Argand burners.
Like letters of reference indicate the same parts in the twofigures.
This device is composed of a cylindrical brush, a, a cutting-disk, b,and a knob, c. The
brush a is preferably formed by securing short bristles or fine wire in a thin double spiral by means of a doubled and twisted wire, which forms the stem of the whole device.
The cutting-disk b, which may be of thin steel, has tangential s1itsprei'erably two. the edges thus formed, 1) b, are raised by bends to clear the other edges, If If, and the latter are sharpened as the cutting-edges. There may be only one, or more than two, outting-edges, if preferred. The disk has a cen tral hole fitted to said brush-stem, and above it the knob c, which may be ofjapanned wood or any suitable material, is tightly secured upon said stem. By thrusting the brush a into the throat of an Argand burner of corresponding size until the cutting-disk 1) reaches the top of the wick, and whirling the two by means of' the knob c in the fingers of the op erator, the wick is easily trimmed and the walls of the throat of the burner cleaned at one operation, andin withdrawing the brush the severed particles are removed from the burner therewith.
Having thus described my said improve ment in wick trimmers and cleaners for Argand burners, I claim as my invention and (lesire to patent under this specification A combined wick trimmer and cleaner for Argand burners, composed of a cleaningbrush, a, a cutting-disk, b, and a knob, c, substant-iall y as herein specified.
In testimony whereofI hereunto sign my name, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 15th day of May, A. D. 1884.
HEINRICH RIEGER.
