Description

Sept. 24, 1963 H. l.. HAGER CHECK PROTECTOR Filed Aug. 3l, 1961 INVENTOR. H42# YL. /A G52 re/ve YS United States Patent O "lee 3,104,610 CHECK PROTECTGR Harvey L. Hager, Paradise, Calif., assigner of two-thirds to Harvey L. Hager, Jr., Miami, Fla. Filed Aug. 31, 1961, Ser. No. 135,226 3 Claims. (Cl. 101-24) This invention relates to a check protector and has as its primary object the provision of a hand mlanlpulable device which may be actuated to create .a serres or band of minute perforations through the figures designating the amount of a check in order to prevent altenation of the check.
An additional object of the invention is the provision of a `device of this character which is small in size, and which may be readily operated by hand, comprising a pair of spaced apart rods together with means for clamp ing the ends ofthe rods on the opposite faces of the check to be protected, one of the rods being provided with a steel roller having Ia series of teeth therein, and the other of the rods being provided with preferably a rubber roller, together with means for rotating one of the rods to imprint the perforations in the paper of the check.
A 4further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is sturdy `and durable in construction, reliable and efficient in operation, and relatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out as the description of the invention proceeds and shown in the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIGURE 1 is 'a top plan view of one form ott the device embodying the instant inventive concept, showing a check to be protected in position therein.
FIGURE 2 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line 2 2 of FIG. 1 as viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows.
FIGURE 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially along the line 3 3 of FIG. l as viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows.
FIGURE 4 is a fragmentary enlarged view, partially in section and partially in elevation, showing .a construc tional detail.
FIGURE 5 is ia view similar to FIG. l showing a modified form of construction, the fragment of the check being omitted.
FIGURE 6 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line 6 6 of FIG. 5 as viewed in the ,direction indicated by the arrows; and
FIGURE 7 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially along the line 7 7 of FIG. 5 as viewed in the direction Iindicated by the arrows.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
Having reference now to the drawings in detail, and more particularly to the form of the invention disclosed in FIGS. 1 to 4, the device of the instant invention is generally indicated at 10 and comprises a first rod or 'bar 1'1, which is preferably solid in construction and which terminates in a shaft or axle 12 upon which is mounted a roller 13, greater in diameter than the rod 12, and preferably comprised of rubber or similar material. The head of the axle 12 is peened as iat 14 and secures in position a washer 15 which holds the roller 13 in position.
A U-shaped yoke 16 is pivotally connected as by means of a pivot 17 at yone corner thereof to an intermediate point of .rod 11. Passing through the lbighf; of yoke 161s a tubular shaft 18, which has a rod 19 extending rotatably therethrough, the rod 19 terminating at one end in a shaft or axle 20 upon which is mounted a roller 21 which is preferably of steel or similiar construction, land which is provided about its periphery with a series of perforating 3,104,610 Patented Sept. 24, 1963 2 teeth 22, the rollers 13 and 21 being in substantial alignment, so that when they are pressed together with ya check C or similar article positioned between them, rotation of the rod =19, in a manner to tbe described hereinafter, will cause the teeth 22 to impart pemforations P through the material of the check and protect the figures or other matter written thereon from possible alteration.
Rotation of the shaft 19 is effected by means of a lenurled hand knob 23 positioned on the end thereof opposite the roller 22 yand extending beyond the end of the yoke 16.
Means are provided for clamping the rollers 13 and 22 tightly upon the opposite faces of the check .and take the form off a cam shaft or eccentric 25 which is journalled in the opposite sides of the yoke 16, and which includes a flat surface 26. A Washer 27 and a peened .head 28 secure one end of the eccentric 25 for rotation while the other end is provided with fa head 29 from which extends an loperating lever 30. The arrangement isl such that when the cam 25 in the position shown in FIG. 2, for example, the end 31 of rod 11 beyond the pivot 17 is rotated to clamp the roller 13 relatively tightly on the face of the check C adjacent the roller 22. Separation of the members is effected by juxtaposing the flat surface 26 to either the rod 11 or the tubular memlber 18, to permit separation of the rollers land the introduction of the check or other material therebetween. After the check has been clamped, the knob 23 is rotated, and the teeth 22 impart the perforations P as shown in FIG. l.
A modified form of device is disclosed in FIGS. 5, 6, and 7, and comprises a bar or rod 35, which has an axle 36 at one end upon which is mounted :a rubber roller 37 substantially identical to the roller 13, the latter being held in position by means of a peened :end 38 of `axle 36 and the washer 39. A yoke 4i) similar to the yoke :16 is pivotally mounted on a pivot 41 extending through the rod 35, and a tubular member 42 seats in the bight of the yoke 40. The shaft 43 extends through the tubular member 42 Iand carries an :axle 44 5at one end upon which is mounted a steel roller 45 having teeth 46 substantialiy identical to the roller 21. i The head of the :axle 44 is .peened as at 47 to secure the roller i-n position, and a knurled operating knob 48 at the opposite end permits rotation of the shaft to 43. Adjustment in `this device is achieved by means of a set screw 49 which extends through a threaded 'bore in the `end 50 olf :shaft 35 and which is operated by a knurled openating knob `51. Obv viously, adjustment of the set screw 49 will permit separation yof the rollers 37 and 45, or alternatively, clamp them tightly together on the opposite faces of a check. 'Ilhe operation of this form of the device is identical in other respects to that of the previously described modification.
From the foregoing it will now be seen that there is herein provided an improved check protector, which accomplishes all the objects of this invention, .and others., including many advantages of great practical utility and commercial importance.
