JOHN G. OGDEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,460, dated January 6, 1885.
Application filed October 1, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN G. OGDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings, of which the following is a description.
Figure 1. represents a side elevation of my improved coupling attached to a car. Fig. 2 is a front View of the same. Fig. 3 is alongitudinal section through the same, with the coupling-bar in dotted lines, as when coupled. Fig. 4 is also a longitudinal section through the coupling, but with the uncoupler raised, and with the coupling-bar, shown in dotted lines, free to leave the coupling. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the coupling-bar.
My invention relates to means for automatically coupling railwaycars together, and for uncoupling the same without going between them.
It consists in the detailed construction and arrangement of the parts hereinafter fully described, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the coupler, B the coupling-bar, (l the uncoupler, and E the uneouplingrod. A
coupler A is firmly secured to each end of the railway-car, and automatically connected by the bar 13, which projects from one of the couplers and engages with the coupler on the next car when the cars are brought together. The mouth a of each coupler is made flaring, and the ends of the coupling-bar are made with a curved point, so that soon as the end of the coupling-bar l3 enters the flaring mouth a. of the coupler and strikes any part of it it is guided upward, and by the combined motion of the cars passes through the passage a and strikes against the curved end a of the coupler, which throws it downward until the coupling-bar rests in the slot (6. The reverse motion of the car withdraws the middle portion, I), of the coupling-bar through the slot a until the head I) of said coupling-bar catches against the shoulder a of the recess (0 in the coupler. The shoulder (1, takes all the pulling strain in drawing the cars along, and the curved form of the recess a", as shown dotted in Fig. 2, prevents the coupling-bar B from rising, and thereby becoming disengaged from the coupling. The uncoupler Cis pivoted on the pin 0 in a slot in the lower part of the.
coupler, and is provided with a bolt, 0', at- 5 5 taching it to the uncoupler-quadrant D, which is also pivoted 011 the pin 0, but on the outside of the coupler. The uncoupling-rod E is attached to the other corner of the quadrant D by the pin (Z, and is bent round from under the car and extends upward through the guides e nearly to the top of the car, where it terminates with a handle, 0, which may be reached from the roof. lVhen the cars are to be uncoupled, they are first backed together, 6 5
so that the end I) of the coupling-bar is pushed out of the recess a and backward against the end of the coupler. The rod E is then raised, turning the quadrant D, and with it the uncoupler 0, until the latter is in the position shown in Fig. 4-. That part of the uncoupler marked c is a slot similar to the slot a of the coupler, and backof this is an inclined plane, 0", with curved sides corresponding to the shape of the end of the head I) of the coupling-bar.
The forward motion of the cars now causes the head I) of the coupling-bar to rise up the inclined plane 0 and pass out of the passage a, through which it entered the coupler.
F are holes at the mouth of the coupler A,
Having thus described my invention, what 9 I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a car-coupler, the combination of the coupler A, having a flaring mouth, a, passage a, curved end a", slot a, shoulder a, and 1e cess a, with the coupling-bar B, consisting of a middle portion, Z), and enlarged ends I), and with the uncoupler O, pivoted in a slot in the lower partof the coupler and provided with an inclined plane, 0, for raising the end of the The projection G presses against 85 coupling-bar, substantially as described am coupler by a bolt, 0, and the uneoupling-rod r0 shown, and for the purpose set forth. I E, provided with the handle 6, by which the 2. In a car-coupler, the combination of the cars maybe uncoupled without going between coupler A, constructed substantially as dethem, substantially as described and shown, scribed and shown, the couplingbar B, conand for the purpose specified. sisting of a middle portion, b, with enlarged JOHN G. OGDEN. ends I), the uncoupler 0, provided with an i11- clined plane for raising the end of the coupling-bar, the quadrant I), attached to the unlVitnesses:
