ASH SIEVE.
No. 310,447. Patented Jan. 6, 1885.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES LEFFINGXVELL, OF NEW'ARK, NEW JERSEY.
ASH-SIEVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,447, dated January 6, 1885.
Application filed November 5, 1883.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Oi-IARLEs LEFFING- WELL, a citizen of the United States, residiug at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Ash-Sieves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to improve ments in ash-sieves; and it oonsistsin the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim appended.
The object of my invention is to improve that class of devices for sifting ashes in which the same are placed in a hopper at the top of an inclined sieve, and by their passage downward the coal and cinders are eliminated from the ashes. This object I accomplish by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my device. Fig. 2 is a perspective bottom view of the combined cover and sieve removed from the case or ash box, and Fig. 3 is a perspecti e view of the case.
Referring to the said drawings by letter, A indicates the case or ash-box, the longitudinal side walls, a a, of which are inclined on their upper edges from the upper front end to the rearlower portion, 1), which is horizontal and on the same plane as the lower transverse wall, B. The case A may be provided on opposite sides with suitable handles,E,whereby the same may be carried, when desired, to discharge its contents.
B indicates the cover for the case, the longitudinal side walls, 0, of which are designed to engage the inclined upper edges of the side walls, a, of the case, and the horizontal portion I) engages a corresponding portion, (1, of the cover. The under side of this cover is closed by a sieve, G, which may be secured to (No model.)
the side and end walls of the said cover, near their lower edges, by screws or other suitable fastening devices. The upper end of this cover terminates in a hopper, e, and is pro vided with a door, 0, for closing the same.
D indicates an aperture in the rear lower wall of the case-cover B, for the discharge of the coal and cinders.
The side walls of the cover may be provided with staples or bolts, and the side walls of the case with hooks or other suitable means for securing the cover to the case. The aperture D is provided with a drop-door, F.
I am aware that it is not new to provide a device for sifting ashes with an inclined sieve, and provide the upper end of its frame with a hopper and its lower end with a dischargeaperture, the sieve-frame being so arranged as to be removable from the ash-box, and therefore I claim only the construction hereinafter pointed out.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an improvement in ash-sitters, the combination, with the ash-box A, having its longitudinal side walls inclined on their upper edges downwardly to the rear horizontal portion, I), which meets the upper horizontal edge of the rear wall, B, of the cover B, having a hopper at its upper end, and a discharge-aperture, I), at its lower end, having a closingdoor, F, the said cover also having a sieve secured between the longitudinal side walls, and its lower end provided with a horizontal portion, (Z, to engage the horizontal portion '6 of the ash-box, and means for connecting the cover to the box, substantially as shown and described.
