UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS L. BESTOR, OF KNOXVILLE, IOIVA, ASSIG'NOR OF TlVO-TI-IIRDS TO CHARLES H. BAKER, OF SAME PLACE, AND THOMAS C. CUNNINGHAM, OF
SIGOURNEY, IOIVA TRUCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,362, dated January 6, 1885.
Application filed May 13, 1884.
To crZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANCIS L. BESTOR, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Knoxville, in the county of Marion and 5 State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trucks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improved truck 10 for raising and moving spools of barb-wire and other articles. The object of the invention is to obtain a device by the use of which it becomes unnecessary for the workman to touch the article to be lift-ed or moved; and to I 5 the accomplishment of the above the invention consists of the novel devices and combination of devices, as will be described and claimed.
Reference will be made to the accompanying 2o drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of a truck constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2, a front View thereof; Fig.
3, a detail; and Figs. 4, 5, and 6, similar views of a modified construction.
Like letters refer to like parts in each view. The frame of the truck consists of a piece,
A, formed at its rear end into a handle, B,
and at its front end bent upwardly and outwardly to form an arm, G, and, further, of a 0 curved piece, D, which is mounted. at its ends upon an axle, E, and upon which the piece A is supported, a brace, F, serving as a further connection between said piece and axle. Mounted upon piece A is a slotted arm, G, in
3 5 which the handle end of a lever, H, is guided. Lever His forked at its outer end, as at I, Fig. 3, and rests in brackets a, formed one upon each side of arm 0, the parts being held together by a pin passed through a slot, h,
40 formed in said lever. Suspended from arm 0 are the lifting-tongs K, which are secured to and adapted to be operated by lever H.
(No model.)
The operation of and manner of using the device is as follows: Whenit is desired to lift and move a spool. of wire or other article, the lever is brought to the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1, with thelower ends of the tongs contracted. Upon raising the handle end of the lever the tongs are expanded and support the spool, entering the central opening made therein, as shown.
In Figs. 4, 5, and 6 I have shown a truck which, in general construction, is similar to that above described. As illustrated in those figures, the axle of the truck is bent at two points, and one end of the curved piece D rests in each of said bent parts. To a pin, M, secured to one bent arm of the axle, a rope, N, is secured, the other end of the rope being passed around and secured to a cam, O, piv oted to piece A, and the handle of which is held in place by a suitable hook, a, formed on standard G. The object of this construction is to provide means for raising the truck to different levels, to adapt it to use in handling articles piled at different heights from the floor. l have also shown in this instance hook 1?, instead of the tongs described, to show how the device may be used for raising casks, &c.
\Vhat I claim is 1. In the truck described, the combination of lever H and lifting device K or P, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the truck, mounted on bent axle E, of rope N, cam O, and the lifting mechanism described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANCIS L. BESTOR.

H. J. Bonn, S. P. AYE-ES.
