Description

ILM. HOCKMAN. 'y DEvIcE'FoR LIFTINQSTOVES.
Patented Feb-.8,18'76.
N0.17s,z93.
I .N VEJV TOR .Attorney HENRY M. EooKMAN, 0E BEnwIoK, PENNSYLVANIA,
IMPROVEMENT I'N DEVICES FQR LIFTING STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,293, dated February 8, 1876; application filed January 26, l1876.
-To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, HENRY M. HooKI/IAN, of Berwick, i-n the county of Columbia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting Devices for Stoves, of which the following is a the fra-me, which may be made ofl timber Vor any suitable material, and having at both ends cross-pieces A', and,if desired, intermediate strengthening-strips A".
The frame may be secured permanently at one end to the cross-piece; but at the other n pins 'a are provided, which it'in suitable holes a'.
By this means this cross-piece can be moved back andforth, and affixed to or upon the frame at will, as it may be desired to lengthen or shorten the distance between the end pieces to adaptthe frame for use under any particulai` style or sizeof stove.
This frame can be moved vertically upon the standards B by means of themetal loops O, which are usually made of band-iron. These are securely attached at their ends, or otherwise, to the crosspiece A', and are adapted,
in size and shape, to tit upon the standards B. These standards are suitably adapted, by a broadbase, B', or otherwise, to rest firm- 1y upon thefloor.
The frame is raisedv by means of a lever, D, the fulcrum of which rest-s in the head or post B,. which may be suitably adapted to hold it, while its inner and short hooked end engages with an eye of the link E, which, in turn, connects with an eye or any suitable device or means upon the cross-piece A'.
When, now, the frame is raised to any desired height it can be stayed or held there by means of pin F, which can be placed in one `to rear, or in any desired way; then the loops rou gh handling of stoves, and damage of breakving the stove.
UNITED STATES PATENT CFFICE.
of the holes b, which comes immediately under the loop.
When, now, this lifter is to be used under a stove, the frame A is, in the first instance,
placed under it from side to side or from front are'placed over the standards at each end, and the levers may be applied at both ends at the same time, or one end lifted and then the other, till by degrees the stove is raised sufficiently.
This device is especially of advantage in placing carpets, zinc, and the like under the stove, or in lifting the stove for the purpose of painting or cleaning the floor, or for any of the many reasons the housekeeper may from time to time have, and by it all severe strains on the arms or back are avoided, as well as all annoyance or inconvenience in The lifter may be made in any suitable size to be readily packed away. It can be made of any desired length, width, or shape, with frame platform, or one of solid plank or of metal; and it can be adapted in various ways, by telescoping the parts or otherwise, Ilot necessary now to enumerate, more particularly to Alengthen or shorten at will, or the standards may be of metal and the frame or platform of wood. These mere details of manufacture will readily suggest themselves to the workman.
The lifter can be made at a very low cost, and in all respects supplies a great want long felt by the housekeeper. Y
Having thus described my invention, what I consider new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isp 1. Ihe adjustable frame or platform A, combined with standards B and lever D, substantially in the manner and for the purposesV set forth.
2. The combination of frame or platform A A', pins a., standards B, loops C, levers D, link E, and pins F, substantiallyv as and for -the purposes set forth.
