COMBIN ED HOT WATER BOILER AND WASHING MACHINE Filed Dec. 14. 1960 United States Patent This invention relates to a washing machine placed within the water space of a hot water boiler.
In villas and other dwelling houses it is usual to arrange the heating boiler in one room, the boiler room, and the washing machine, the dryer and the like in another room, the laundry room.
The main feature of the present invention is to provide in acompartment of the water room of aboiler, separated from the main water room of the boiler, a washing machine having an outer shell. boiler may be defined by a partition containing passages. This invention gives rise to the following advantages:
(a) The washing water introduced into the washing machine is rapidly heated by the boiler water to a temperature which may be adjusted manually or by means of a thermostat.
' (b) It is easy to obtain pre-heated air for drying the laundry.

The heating boiler shown in FIG. 1 is heated by means of an oil burner assembly 1 having its jet 2 extending downwards. into a combustion chamber 3. The latter communicates with a fireplace 4 having a tire grate 5 i on which wood, coke or other solid fuels may also be burned. The combustion gases are evacuated through the line 6. The combustion chamber 3, the fireplace 4 and the flue 6 are all surrounded by a water boiler 7, which also surrounds heat exchanger coils 8 which have a feed pipe 9 for cold water and a discharge pipe 10 for water which has been heated in the boiler. A heat insulating layer 11 is arranged around the water boiler 7. The forementioned elements are protected by a removable or hinged cover 12.
At one end of the stand 13 of the boiler there is arranged a container 14 which comprises an extension or a compartment of the water boiler 7 separated from the latter by a partition 115 which contains passages 16 and 17 for the boiler water. A perforated washing cylinder 29, having a cover =19, is surrounded by an outer shell '18 which is immersed in the boiler water and extends down into the container 14. The washing cylinder 20 is driven by an electric motor 22 by a V-belt 21. The motor 22 is arranged'in a chamber 23 below the container '14. 24 denotes a suitable transmission to drive the washing cylinder 20. The laundry loading and unloading opening 25 is provided with a cover 26, and the cover 26. is protected bya removable and insulated cover 27 which is situated level with the cover 12.
The washing machine is prov'idedwith a feed pipe 29 i forcold water controlled by a tap 28, and the shell 18 is .at the bottom provided with a drain tube 30 'for the washing water.

When the. washing machine is to be used and cold water i is fed through the conduit 29, this water is rapidly heated by the hot shell '18. The washing machine can thus be used practically at once. The wash temperature is maintainedby the control device which controls the valve 34 and it is also determined by the size of the passage 16.
The boiler water streams through the passage 17 inthe wall 15, delivers heat to the shell 18 and escapes then through the passage "16 to be reheated at its passage around the fire place 4- and the combustion chamber 3. After washing the laundry in the washing cylinder 20, the washwater is discharged through the tube 30. The
washing cylinder 20 may then be driven as a centrifuge.
In the last phase of the drying the blower 31 is started and forces air through the duct 32 in which it is heated and is finally forced through the jet 33 downwards along the inside of the shell 18 and through the laundry which is i then dried to any desired degree. During the drying in the washing cylinder 20, now servingas a drying tumbler, the covers 26 and 27' should be opened. Upon removing the laundry from the cylinder 20 it can be hung in the rather hot boiler room.
FIG. 2 illustrates the invention when used in connec' tion with a washing machine having a vertical drive shaft 36. The arrangement of the air duct 32' is easily understood from this figure. An inlet tube 29' raving a valve 28" debouches in the outer she-ll 18' of the washing machine. The tube 29' is connected to the cold water conduit 9 of the hot water boiler 8'. The drain tube forthe washing water has been denoted 30'.
The present invention has been described in detail above for purposes of illustration only and is not intended to be limited by this description. Thus, the type of heating boilerand the type of washing machine is independent of the invention. The valve 34 controlled by the thermostat might be arranged in thepassage 17 instead of in the passage :16. A COMBINED DWELLING HOUSE HEATING BOILER AND A WASHING MACHINE COMPRISING, IN COMBINATION, (A) A WATER SPACE OF SAID BOILER, (B) MEANS HEATING THE WATER SPACE OF SAID BOILER, (C) A SHELL OF A WASHING MACHINE DISPOSED IN THE WATER SPACE OF SAID BOILER, SAID SHELL HAVING AN OPENING LEADING OUTSIDE SAID BOILER, (D) A ROTATABLY MOUNTED WASHING CYLINDER CONTAINING PERFORATIONS, SAID WASHING CYLINDER BEING DISPOSED WITHIN SAID SHELL, (E) MEANS TO ROTATE SAID WASHING CYLINDER,
