PADLOCK.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 31,003, dated December 18, 1860.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN NORTH, of Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Padlock, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the let ters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, in whichvFigure l represents a front view of the pad-lock completed, Fig. 2 represents the side view of the lock having the key annexed to it. Figs. 3 and 4 are drawings .to represent the hook and tumbler-case, having the cap and tumbler removed. Fig. 5 is a front view of the tumbler and Fig. 6 a side view showing the piston holes l l and the catch or tongue a attached to it,-Figs. 7 and 8 represent the cap which secures the tumbler to the case and hook.

The nature of my improved pad-lock is so arranged and constructed in its parts as to simplify and chea-pen its manufacture and make it compact and durable. By having the hook or hasp cast to the tumbler case, and of securing the tumbler to the case by the cap having its outer edge beveled, and fastened by compressing the outer edge of the case to the rim of the cap and neatly securing it without the aid of rivets.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

I make a suitable case to receive the tumbler, it having the hook or hasp fast to the Y side of the case, the large part of the hook which joins to the case has two holes drilled into it at 2 2 Figs. l and 3 into which are placed the spiral springs 3 3 and the drivers 2 2. The tumbler c Figs. 5 and 6 have two holes drilled at l l corresponding to the ones in the hook of the tumbler case and into these holes are placed the pistons, l l;

the tumbler is then placed into the recess of the case c as shown by Fig. 3. The catch or tongue a is put through the slot m in the case Fig. 4 and fastened to the tumbler by driving it into the hole drilled to receive it. The cap l Figs. 7 and 8 is then placed over the tumbler, the neck of the tumbler passing through it, and is secured fast to the case, by compressing the outer edge of the ca se close to the rim of the cap and' is neatly secured without the aid of rivets. The catch or tongue a turns with the tumbler and on being broughtagainst the end of the hook the holes in the tumbler l l are brought in a line with the holes in the hook at 2 2, and by the force of the springs 3 3, the driving pins 2 2 are forced into the tumbler holes l l, and locks the catch or tongue fast to the hook Z). It is unlocked by the key 0c and pistons l l, which force the drivers 2 2 out of the tumbler when it is free to turn and unlock. The tumbler and piston-lock is well known and long been in use; to this I make no claim.

That I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination as constructed; .the hookcase and the attaching the tongue or catch to the tumbler as a new article of manufact-ure as in the manner above described.
