Description

NITED sa s! J. A. GOEWEY, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
PADLOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 22,869, dated February 8, 1859.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. Gonwnr, of the city and county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Padlocks; and I hereby declare the following to be a full and eXact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a plan of the lock when locked, (with the cap removed to show the arrangement of tumbler-s, springs &c.) and Fig. 2, is the same showing the position of the tuinblers &c. when the shackle is released.
The nature of my invention relates to an arrangement of tumblers and springs in spring padlocks whereby the construction of them is greatly simplied, their cost greatly diminished, and their liability to derangement lessened.
The following description will enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention.
A, is the outer case; B, the shackle, having a mortise, b, cut through its end; C, the drill pin.
The lower tumbler, D, has its lower edge cut to a circle whose center is eccentric to the center of the key; it is held to its position by the spring e, and has an off-set hooked point cZ, coinciding with the point, c, of the upper tumbler. bler, E, has its under side cut out so that key does not operate upon it until it strikes the face, d, it is held up by the spring cZ, it has also another spring, F, working under the point c', for the purpose of throwing out the shackle B when the tumblcrs are drawn.
The stump, G, is fastened to the lower tumbler, D, and prevents the upper tumbler, E, from being forced back until the lower tumbler is raised to a sufficient height The upper tumto release it, thereby adding to the security of the lock against picking.
I-I, is the bit of the key.
To lock my improved lock, all that is required is to force down the shackle, B', the outer edge of the point striking the point ci of the lower tumbler, D, forces it back and raises the stump, G, so as to release the upper tumbler, E, before the inner edge of the point of the shackle strikes the point e; a continuance of the pressure forces the upper tumbler back, and at the same time compresses the spring F. When the shackle is in far enough the points Z and e are forced, by the springs d and c of their respective tulnblers, into the mortise Z), thus securing the shackle B. The operation of unlockino is as follows: The key being inserted and turned the bit H strikes the lower edge of the tumbler, D, raising it so that its point CZ is carried out of the mortise b, the stump G at the same time clearing the upper tumbler E; the revolution of the key being continued th-e bit H strikes the face d and draws back the tumbler E, carrying the point e out of the mortise b, thus releasing the shackle B, which is thrown out of the lock by the spring F.
I am aware that spring padlocks have been constructed to throw out their shackles therefore I do not claim them broadly, but
That I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination of the tumbler E, having attached to it the spring F, with the tumbler D, having attached to it the stump Gr, when arranged and operated in the manner set forth.
JOI-IN A. GOEVVEY.
