My invention relates to car-couplings; and it consists in the improvements described and set forth, whereby asimple, durable, and efficient device is produced.

A represents the body of the draw-head, which is secured upon the under central portion of the car, as indicated, and has the usual rear extension, B, embraced by a spring. a, to provide a spring-bearing for the drawhead. The said draw-head is provided with a recess, 1), at one side of its front portion, in which is pivoted the rear end of the shank portion a of a metallic hook, O. A second recess,d, formed parallel with the first-mentioned recess, extends back in the body of the drawhead. A pin, 6, serving as the pivot for the book 0, pierces the said drawhead, so as to pass transversely through both recesses. An angle-lever, D, is pivoted by a pin, f, in the rear portion of the recess d, and is of the form shown in Fig. 2. The portion of the draw-head A forming the bottom of the recess dis inclined downward to the front of the said draw-head as illustrated in Fig. 2. and the lower portion of the lever D is formed to bear upon and accord with said inclined surface. The upper free end of the said levcr D is perforated for the attachment of one end of a cord or cable, 9, which is attached to a drum, E, keyed upon avertical shaft, F, designed to be operated by the brakeman or operator. The nose or upper front portion, h, of the hook O is perforated for the attachment of asecond cord or cable, i,which is also connected to the drum E.
The operation of the coupling is as follows: The arrangement on the adjacent couplings of recesses, hooks, and levers will be the reverse of each other, as shown in Fig. 2. As the two draw-heads approach each other each hook-rod C will sliile'up and enter the recess d of the opposite drawhead and engage the pinse, arranged transversely therein, tlr-reby insuring both hooks combining in lhrco'iplin; Now.\\'l1cu either of the vertical shafts are rotated so as to revolve the drums, the traction exerted on the cords g i will re spectively cause the same to lift the hook out of engagement with the pin 6 of the opposite draw-head, and at the same time tilt the lever D on its pivot f, so as to cause the lower portion of said lever to contact with the head of the hook of the opposite draw-head and lift it out of engagement with the pin e,-there by effecting. upon the single operation of either one of the shafts F, the simultaneous disengagement of both hooks G from the pin 6. Loops j are arranged on the front of the draw-heads, and serve as buffers, to limit the approach of said draw-heads to each other and insure the entrance ofthe hooks O in the recesses d sufficient onlyto engage the pins e.
I claim- 1. The combination, in a car-coupling, of a draw-head provided with recesses b d, a pin, 6, transversely piercing. said recesses, a hook pivoted in the recess 1), and an angle-lever,
D, pivoted in the rear portion of the recess d, and adapted to move independently of said hook, to contact with and lift the same, cords or cables attached to said hook and angle-lever, and operating means, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, in a car-coupling, of a draw-head provided with recesses 12 d, pins e, transversely piercing said recesses, a book, 0, pivoted in the recess b, and an angle-lever, D, pivoted in the rear portion of the recess (Z, and having its lower portion inclined to correspond with the inclined bottom of the recess d, cords or cables attached to said hook and to said angle-lever, operating dfum E, and buffer 9', substantially as set forth.
