No. 76,309 8 Claims. (Cl. -331) This invention relates to novel and improved beds having removable side and end panels.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of easily attached and removable means for converting ordinary beds, including hollywood type beds, into temporary netting enclosed cribs for young children, thereby obviating the necessity of buying cribs which are usable only in the infancies of children, and enabling use of the bed frames, in their original forms, with .the said means removed therefrom, by grown children and adults.
Another object of the invention is the provision of beds having regular height footboards and headboards, which are only slightly modified without substantial multilation thereof or major changes in their original appearances, to accept the mounting therein of novel removable side and end panels.
A further object of the invention is the provision, in conjunction with hollywood type beds, of improvised footboards and headboards to which the novel removable side and end panels are mountable.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of novel, more secure, more efficient, and more easily operated means of attachment for the side and end panels.
Other important objects and advantageous features of the invention will be apparent from the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein, for pur. poses of illustration only, a specific form of the invention is set forth in detail.
In the drawings:
FIGURE 1 is a side elevation of an ordinary footboard and headboard equipped bed, showing side and end panels of the present invention mounted thereon;
FIGURE 2 is a top plan view of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is an exploded perspective view of FIG- URE 2;
FIGURE 4 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view, showing mounting of an end panel and connection thereto of a side panel;
FIGURE 5 is a 5-5 of FIGURE 4;

FIGURE 7 is a further enlarged fragmentary transverse seotion taken on the line 7-7 of FIGURE 6; and,
FIGURE 8 is an exploded perspective view showing the fastening means for a side panel.
Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein like numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, the numeral 10 generally designates a substantially conventional bed, comprising a horizontal frame 12, upon which a mattress 14 is supported, and a footboard 16 and a headboard 13 secured to and extending upwardly from related ends of the frame 12.
The footboard 16 and the headboard 18 are shown as being of an open type, having posts 20 and 22, respectively, at its ends, which, in the case of closed or paneltype footboards and headboards, correspond to vertical end members. In accordance with the present invention, horizontally elongated reticulated side panels 24 extend along the sides of and reach above the bed frame 12, between and are secured, at their ends, to reticulated foot and head panels 26 and 28, respectively, which, in effect, define an open rectangular reticulated frame, which is mounted on the footboard 16 and headboard 13 cf the bed 10, the reticulated panels being readily separable from horizontal section taken on the line 3,093,838 Patented June 18, 1963 the bed and from each other, for compact storage in a stacked relationship.
The end panels 26 and 28 are substantially similar, and comprise horizontally elongated straight and parallel spaced upper and lower bars 30 and 32, between and along which extend preferably flexible screens or nettings 34. The screens 34 are secured, at their upper edges, between sections 35 and 36 constituting the upper bars 30, and are secured, at their lower edges, between similar sections 48 and 4b which make up the lower bars 32. Screws 37 extend through and secure the bar sections together. The end edges 42 of the screens 34 are spaced from the ends of the bars 34) and 32, so that these end edges are positioned inwardly of the footboard and headboard posts, when the end panels are installed. The bars 32 on both end panels 26 and 28 are longer than the distance between the outer sides of the posts of the footboard 16 and the headboard 18.
The lower bars of the footboard end panel 26 have, at locations near to their ends, and in line with the posts of the footboard 16, screw sockets 44, which, as shown in FIGURE 6, are threaded into sockets 46, provided in the inner sides of the related posts 20, the screw sockets 44 having lateral tool-receiving flanges 48 on their inner ends. Screws 50 extend through the bars and are threaded into the screw sockets 4-4. At locations between the screws 50 and the ends of the bars, and outwardly of the posts, the bars are formed with smooth detent bores 52 adapted to receive detent means on the related ends of the side panels 24. As shown in FIGURES 4, 5 and 6, the said bars are preferably enclosed in plastic covers 54, which have hook flanges 56 on the lower ends of their sidewalls, which are securably engaged in longitudinal slots 58, provided in the undersides of the bars.
The bar of the headboard panel 23, has, as shown in FIGURE 5, screw sockets 60, which differ from the footboard panel screw sockets 44. The screw sockets 60 comprise smooth portions 62 which are journalled through smooth bores 64 in the bars, and threaded portions 66, which extend outwardly from the bars, and are threaded into sockets 68, formed in the headboard posts 22, the screw sockets 6% having lateral tool-receiving flanges 70, on their inner ends, and smooth blind bores 72 which open to the inner sides of the bars.
The side panels 24- comprise similar straight-longitudinally elongated upper and lower bars 74 and 76, respectively, which are composed of sections 78 and 80, secured together, as by means of screws 82, with related edges of flexible net screens 84 secured therebetween, as by means of glue, and with the ends of the screws spaced from the footboard and headboard ends 36 and 88, respectively, of the bars 74 and 76. The bars 74 and 76 are of lengths to extend between the inner sides of the bars of the footboard and headboard panels, and have plastic covers thereon like the covers 54-.
As shown in FIGURE 6, the upper and lower bars 74 and 76 are formed, in their footboard ends 816, with centered longitudinal blind bores 90, in which sliding detent bolts 92 are disposed, with expanding springs 94 compressed between the inward ends of the bolts and the ends 96 of the blind bores. Set screws 98 extend through the bars 74 and 76 and are engageable with the 'detent bolts 92, for holding the same in projected positions in the dctent bores 52 in the ends of the footboard panel bars 30 and 32.
As shown in FIGURES 5 and 8, the side panel bars 74 and 76 are formed, in their headboard ends 88, with centered longitudinal blind bores 100, partially formed in each of the sections 78 and thereof, in which slide detent bolts 102, which are projected into the screw sockets 60 of the headboard posts 22, by expanding springs 104 which are compressed between the inner ends of the bolts 102 and the closed ends 106, of the blind bores. The outer sections 78 of the bars 74 and 76 are formed with dual horizontal longitudinal bayonet slots 108 comprise straight longitudinal main portions 112, and lateral right-angular end' retaining portions 114 and 116. When the pins 110 are moved to and engaged in the inner lateral portions 114, the bolts 102 are retracted out of the screw sockets 60, for disconnecting the side panel bars from the head board panel 28. When the pins 116 are moved to and engaged in the outer lateral slot portions 116, the pins are locked in the screw sockets 6t}. Elongated wear plates 118 are suitably secured to the outer sides of the bars of the side panels, as indicated at 129, and have dual bayonet slots 122 thereon, which are registered with the bayonet slots 108.
With the detent bolts 102 in retracted position and disengaged from the headboard panel screw sockets 60, the side panels 24 are easily and quickly disconnected from the footboard panel 25 simply by moving the side panels away from the footboard panel 26, in a manner to disengage the detent bolts 92 on the footboard ends 88 of the side panel bars from the detent bores 52 of the footboard panel bars.
The footboard and headboard panels are easily and quickly removable from the bed footboard 16 and headboard 18, simply by turning the screws 50 out of the screw sockets 44, in the case of the footboard panel 26, and backing the screw sockets 60 out of the post sockets 68, in the case of the headboard panel 23.
