This invention rel-ates to paperboard reels and particularly to heavy duty reels for winding metal pipe and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide reels of relatively low cost which are practical for winding metal pipe and for other very heavy duty.
A more particular object of the invention, in one aspect thereof, is the provision of paperboard reels which are adapted to very heavy duty but which may be readily disassembled and reassembled if desired.
In lighter duty applications, such as winding flexible electric cable, it has been proposed to provide paperboard end discs having tabs which extend into core structure. Examples of such proposals are found in Australian Patent 136,000 of January 23, 1950, and Australian patent 141,590 of June 15, 1951.
We have discovered that a greatly improved reel may be obtained by association of tabs with tubular core structure which is scored or formed to have polygonal cross sections rather than circular cross sections, thereby accomplishing a tight nesting of the core plies and a structure which is of superior strength and rigidity. The advantages of this feature of construction are not lost even when the reel is not fastened together and remains capable of :disassernbly into halves and reassembly with the use of fasteners or the like.
The contemplated core structure is such that the strength of the reel may be further increased, if desired, 'by employing multi-ply end discs, some of the plies of which extend a substantial distance radially inwardly of the small diameter of the core structure.
A presently preferred example of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a reel embodying the invention.
FIGURE 2 is a view of the reel shown in FIGURE 1 in side elevation, partly broken away.
FIGURE 3 is a cross-section of a portion of the structure shown in FIGURE 2.
The reel shown in the drawings includes the flange structure generally indicated by the reference numeral and the core structure generally indicated by the reference numeral 11. The flanges 10 each preferably comprise multi-ply end discs, which in the particular reel illustrated include the laterally innermost plies 12 and the additional plies 13 and 14. A set of tabs 15 is folded laterally inwardly from each of the plies 12. In the particular reel illustrated a set of 24 tabs is folded inwardly from each ply 12. Each tab 15 is integral with its associated ply 12.
The core structure 11 comprises three plies, the radially innermost of which is constituted by the two sets of tabs 15. The radially intermediate ply of the core structure comprises a pair of short tubes 17 which in assembled condition may abut along their edges as indicated by the line numbered 16 in FIGURE 2. Each of the short tubes 17 surrounds one of the sets of tabs. Each short tube is seamed to itself by a paper tape 28. The short tubes 17 are polygonal in cross section, having as many sides as there are tabs in each of the sets of tabs 15, in this case 24. The sides of the short tubes 17 are divided and defined by the fold lines 18, the tubes being preferably scored on their inner sides at the location of the fold lines 18.

The sides of each short tube 17 lie against and are affixed, as by the staples 19, to the tabs 15 in one one-to one relationship.
The radially outermost ply of the core structure comprises a long tube 20 which surrounds both of the short tubes 17. The long tube 20 is seamed to itself by a paper tape 29. The long tube 20 is also polygonal in cross section and has as many sides as there are tabs in each of the sets of tabs 15, in this case 24. The sides of the long tube 20 are divided and defined by the fold lines 21, the tube 20 being preferably scored on its inner sides at the location of the fold lines 21. The sides of the long tube 20 lie against the sides of each short tube 17 in a one-to-one relationship, but the long tube 20 need not be aflixed to either of the short tubes 17. The three plies of the core constitute a snugly nested tight and strong structure which may nevertheless be disassembled if desired as by end-wise removal of one of the short tubes 17 and its associated tabs 15 and associated flange 10, such as the subassembly indicated in FIGURE 3.
The plies 13 and 14 of each of the flanges 10 may extend radially inwardly of the radially innermost core ply which is constituted by the sets of tabs '15, as shown in the drawings. These plies may extend to a central hole 22 of relatively small diameter. They may be reinforced adjacent the central hole 22 by the disc 12a which is formed from the same web as the ply 12 and constitutes the center portion of the web which remains when the tabs 15 are cut and folded laterally inwardly.
What is claimed is:
1. A paperboard reel comprising paperboard core structure and paperboard flange structure, said flange structure comprising a pair of spaced parallel coaxially aligned multi-ply end discs, said core structure comprising at least three core plies, the radially innermost of said three plies comprising two sets of a given number of tabs, the tabs of one set being integral with and folded laterally inwardly from the laterally innermost ply of one end disc, the tabs of the other set being integral with and folded laterally inwardly from the laterally innermost ply of the other end disc, the radially intermediate one of said three plies comprising a pair of short tubes each surrounding one of said sets of tabs, said short tubes being polygonal in cross section and having as many sides as said given number, the sides of each short tube lying against and being affixed to the tabs of its associated set of tabs in one-to-one relationship, the radially outermost of said three plies comprising a long tube surrounding both of said short tubes, said long tube being polygonal in cross section and having as many sides as said given number, the sides of said long tube lying against the sides of each short tube in a one-to-one relationship, at least one ply of each end disc extending radially inwardly or said radially innermost core ply.

A paperboard reel comprising paperboard core structure and paperboard flange structure, said flange structure comprising a pair of spaced parallel coaxially aligned multi-ply end discs, said core structure comprising at least three core plies, the radially innermost of said three plies comprising two sets of a given number of tabs, the tabs of one set being integral with and folded laterally inwardly from the laterally innermost ply of one end disc, the tabs of the other set being integral with and folded laterally inwardly from the laterally innermost ply of the other end disc, the radially intermediate one of said three plies comprising a pair of short tubes each surrounding one of said sets of tabs, said short tubes being polygonal in cross section and having as many sides as said given number, the sides of each short tube lying against and being aflixed to the tabs of its associated set of tabs in one-to-one relationship, the radially outermost of said a.) Claims (1)

1. A PAPERBOARD REEL COMPRISING PAPERBOARD CORE STRUCTURE AND PAPERBOARD FLANGE STRUCTURE, SAID FLANGE STRUCTURE COMPRISING A PAIR OF SPACED PARALLEL COAXIALLY ALIGNED MULTI-PLY END DISCS, SAID CORE STRUCTURE COMPRISING AT LEAST THREE CORE PLIES, THE RADIALLY INNERMOST OF SAID THREE PLIES COMPRISING TWO SETS OF A GIVEN NUMBER OF TABS, THE TABS OF ONE SET BEING INTEGRAL WITH AND FOLDED LATERALLY INWARDLY FROM THE LATERALLY INNERMOST PLY OF ONE END DISC, THE TABS OF THE OTHER SET BEING INTEGRAL WITH AND FOLDED LATERALLY INWARDLY FROM THE LATERALLY INNERMOST PLY OF THE OTHER END DISC, THE RADIALLY INTERMEDIATE ONE OF SAID THREE PLIES COMPRISING A PAIR OF SHORT TUBES EACH SURROUNDING ONE OF SAID SETS OF TABS, SAID SHORT TUBES BEING POLYGONAL IN CROSS SECTION AND HAVING AS MANY SIDES AS SAID GIVEN NUMBER, THE SIDES OF EACH SHORT TUBE LYING AGAINST AND BEING AFFIXED TO THE TABS OF ITS ASSOCIATED SET OF TABS IN ONE-TO-ONE RELATIONSHIP, THE RADIALLY OUTERMOST OF SAID THREE PLIES COMPRISING A LONG TUBE SURROUNDING BOTH OF SAID SHORT TUBES, SAID LONG TUBE BEING POLYGONAL IN CROSS SECTION AND HAVING AS MANY SIDES AS SAID GIVEN NUMBER, THE SIDES OF SAID LONG TUBE LYING AGAINST THE SIDES OF EACH SHORT TUBE IN A ONE-TO-ONE RELATIONSHIP, AT LEAST ONE PLY OF EACH END DISC EXTENDING RADIALLY INWARDLY OF SAID RADIALLY INNERMOST CORE PLY.
