(Cl. 242-672) This invention relates to an improved foil take-up mechanism for use on a roll leaf hot stamping machine.
It is an object of this invention to provide a device which will take up and store used foil until suflicient has accumulated for disposal.
It is still a further object of this invention to promote a device wherein excessive pull and hence excessive usage of foil is avoided.
Still a further object of this invention is to provide means whereby used foil can be readily discharged, freeing the structure for further use.

FIGURE 3 is a fragmentary perspective of the takeup spool support brackets.
The stamping machine illustrated may be of the type described in my Patent 2,517,493 issued August 1, 1950, having a foil supply roll rotatably mounted upon a bracket 12 fixed to the machine. Foil 14 is reeved across printing bed 16 under guides 18 and 20. Upon reciprocation of ram bar 22 the heated type 24 melt the foil leaving the desired imprint upon the object being marked.
This invention is directed to the used foil take-up mechanism 26. A V-shaped bracket 28 is suitably mounted upon the ram bar 22, having cross bars 30 spanning its open arms passing through and supporting a pair of opposed brackets 32. A knurled roller 34 is supported between these brackets upon a shaft which projects through each bracket. One extremity 36 of this shaft carries a rachet 38 thereon. A spring urged pawl 40 is mounted upon a stationary part of the machine and engages rachet 38 upon reciprocation of the ram bar rotating knurled roller 34.
Each bracket 32 has an out turned proturberance 42 through which a screw 44 projects supporting springs 46 which bear against the ends 48 of a shaft upon which roller 50 is mounted which shaft projects through slots in brackets 32 so that roller 50 is sprnig urged towards knurled roller 34 clamping foil 14 therebetween, whereby rotation of roller 34 hereinbefore described pulls the foil from the supply roll 10.
A second set of brackets 52 and 54 are supported Patented June 4, 1963 ice by shafts 30 and project above the first set 32. Bracket 52 at its uppermost extremity has a hole 56 therein, While bracket 54 at its uppermost extremity has a slot 56 therein. A foil take-up spool 58 is mounted upon a shaft 60, one end of which 62 projects into hole 56 and the other end of which 64 is supported in slot 56.
A pulley 66 is mounted upon extremity 64 of shaft 69 and a pulley 68 is mounted upon extremity 70 of the shaft supporting knurled roller 34. A belt 72 is looped around pulleys 66 and 68 so that take-up spool 58 is rotated upon rotation of knurled roller 34. As the diameter of the used foil builds up on spool 58, the increased circumference increases the amount of foil pulled. This excessive pull which would normally accelerate the rate of feeding foil is eliminated by the belt drive which permits a slipping action avoiding same.
The take up spool 58 and shaft end 62 have a slot '74 therethrough. The end of foil 14 may then be threaded through the slot 74 and folded to provide the desired pulling tension. When the take up spool 58 is filled, the belt 72 is removed and the spool lifted from brackets 52 and 54 and the accumulated foil merely pushed off end 62 thereof.
While what hereinbefore has been described is the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is readily apparent that alterations and modifications can be resorted to without departing from the scope of this invention, and such alterations and modifications are intended to be included within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
A foil take-up mechanism for a hot stamping machine comprising a pair of foil feeding rollers between which foil is fed, means for rotating at least one of said rollers, a pair of brackets projecting upwardly from said feeding rollers, one of said brackets having a hole therein and the other a slot at the extremity furthest from said feeding rollers, a take up spool receiving foil passing between said feeding rollers adapted at one extremity to be supported in said slot and having a protuberance thereon projecting into said hole, and a belt drive interconnecting said take-up spool and said driven roller permitting variation of the rate of rotation of the takeup spool as foil accumulates thereon, said take-up spool having a slot therein communicating with one end thereof.
