HEEL-STIFFENER MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,161, dated December 9, 188%.
Application filed November 19, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL Peron, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Machinery for Molding Boot and Shoe Stiffeners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation,and Fig. 2 is-a top elevation,of my ma chine, and Fig. 3 is a stiffener formed thereon. Fig. 4 shows the outline shape of my rolls and a sectional shape of the form. Fig. 5 is a view in perspective of the bed-plate, grooves, guideblock, and form. Fig. 6 is a top view of the same with the stay and rolls added. Fig. 7 is a vertical section of Fig. 5 on dotted line :6 m. Fig. 8 is a horizontal section of Fig. 6 on dotted line 1 1. Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the slide, hollow block, plate, slots, and rolls. Fig. 10 is a vertical sectional View of Fig. 9, taken on one side of the center.
In the drawings similar parts are indicated by similar letters of reference.
In Fig. 2, A is the bed-plate, and B frame attached to such bed-plate. G is a shaft with journals 0, such journals bolted to the frame. Upon this shaft are four cams, D, D, D and D. Upon the bedplate, and firmly bolted thereto, is the form E. This form is shaped to correspond with the inner shape of the stiffener when finished. Moving freely in grooves A in the bcd-plate A is the slide F. This slide F has 011 it, and bolted thereto or fastened by any appropriate means, hollow block F. Upon the top of this block is a plate, F This plate is rubbcr-eushioned; but for sake of clearness the cushion is not shown, and it may be omitted without changing the character of mylinvention. In this plate F are slots F F, and in the slide F are corresponding slots. In these slots play the axes of two rolls, G G. These rolls are shaped to correspond in shape with the sides of the form E, and are each provided with the collar G", as shown in Fig. 4.
Back of the form E, and moving freely in the hollow block F, is the stay H. On either side of the rolls G are guide-blocks I. These blocks move in the oblique grooves I I in blocks 1 I, bolted to bed-plate A. The stay H is connected by rod H with cam D The slide F, carrying the hollow block F, plate F and rolls G G, is connected by the rod F" with the cam D. The blocks I are connected by the rods I with slides I I", which in turn connect with cams D D.
In Fig. 4 is shown the outline shape of one of the rolls G and the sectional shape of the form E. In this figure, G is the collar of the roll G.
In Fig. 5 is shown in perspective the bedplate A, with its grooves A, the guide-blocks I I, and form E. In Fig. 6 is shown a top view of the same mechanism, with the stayH and also the rolls G G added. In both Figs. 5 and 6, for the sake of clearness, the slide F is omitted.
In Fig. 7, which is a vertical section of Fig. 5, taken at the dotted line as a", and in Fig. 8, which is a horizontal section of Fig. 6, taken on the dotted line 1 1, I have for the sake of clearness, omitted the oblique grooves I I and blocks 1 I.
In Fig. 9 I show a perspective view of the slide F, carrying the hollowblock Fand plate F provided with the slots F F This view also shows the rolls G G; and in Fig. 10 I show a vertical sectional view of Fig. 9, such vertical sectional view being taken on a line a little to one side of the center of such Fig. 9. These Figs. 5 to 10, inclusive, show'more clearly and in detail the parts of my machine which shape the stiffener.
The operation of this machinery is as follows: The various slides being retracted, thus leaving the form free, the stiffener is inserted and placed upon the form E. By the revolution of the shaft 0 and the action of the cam D the stay H is brought in contact with the stiffener on the head of the form and holds it in position. The shaft still revolving by the action of the cams D D,and connecting-slides I I", and rods 1 I the blocks I are moved in their grooves a short distance nearer the form, and the shaft still revolving by the action of cam D', the slide Fis moved in its grooves A. The rolls G G engage the stiffener, and the slide F F still continuing its motion, the rolls G G are forced down the sides of thestiffener; the blocks I remain stationary, but the rolls engaging against them are forced by the continued movement of the slide Ffirlnly against the stiffener as they pass along its sides until they reach the end of the stiffener and the form of the rolls corresponding to the sectional form of the form E. The stiffener is thus equally pressed by these rolls against the form E at all parts of the stiffener. This same operation also turns over and firmly presses the flange of the stiffener. This flange is composed of that part of the stiffener which projects above the form, and is turned over by the collars G of the rolls as the rolls pass down the stiffener. The stiffener having been thus formed by the continued motion of the shaft 0 and the operation of the cams D D, the blocks I are slightly retracted, the slide F is drawn back, and the stiffener remains upon the form, held only in place by its own shape and the stay H, and the shaft still revolving, this stay is then retracted, and the stiffener is by any appropriate-means ejected from the form E completed and ready for use without further operation.
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a machine for forming boot and shoe stiii'eners, the stationary form E, in combination with the rolls G G, provided with the collars G G, substantially as shown and described.
,2. In a machine for forming boot and shoe stiifeners, the stationary form E, in combina tion with the stay H and rolls G G, such rolls provided-with the collars G G, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a machine for forming boot and shoe stiffen-ers, the form E, in combination withthe rolls G G and blocks I I, substantially as shown and described.
4:. In a machine for forming boot and shoe stiffeners, the slide F, with its hollow block F, and plate F provided with slots F in com bination with rolls G G, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a machine for forming boot and shoe stiffeners, the slide F,with its hollow block F, plate F, provided with slots F and rolls G G, in combination with the form E, substantially as shown and described.
6. In a machine for forming boot and shoe stiffeners, the slide F, with its hollow block F, plate F provided with slots F and rolls G G, in combination with the form E and blocksI I, substantially as shown and described.
7. In a machine for forming boot and shoe stiffeners, the slide F, with its hollow block F,
plate F provided with slots F, and rolls G G, in combination with the form E and stay H,
