Calif, a corporation of (Ialifornia Filed June 8, 1961, Ser. No. 115,677 4 Claims. (Cl. 268-108) This invention relates to window operating apparatus, and included in the objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a window operating apparatus which is particularly adapted to operate windows equipped with supporting brackets of the type disclosed in Patent No. 2,784,459, issued March 12, 1957, but which is not limited to use with windows so equipped.
Second, to provide a window operating apparatus wherein a screw drive means operates a pair of jointed struts so arranged as to provide an essentially triangular and rigid brace when extended and to fold compactly between the fixed and movable window frames when closed.
Third, to provide a window operating apparatus wherein a pair of special jointed struts are provided with fulcrum elements adapted to operate, as the window approaches its closed position, to facilitate drawing the window tightly into its Window frame even though the window be warped.
Fourth, to provide a Window operating apparatus which incorporates means for eifecting initial opening of the window in such a manner as to facilitate freeing of the window, should it tend to bind in the window frame.
With the above and other objects in view, as may appear hereinafter, reference is directed to the accompanying drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 is an elevational view of a window operating apparatus, and showing the window in its closed position;
FIGURE 2 is a sectional view thereof taken through 2-2 of FIGURE 1, showing the window in its open position;
FIGURE 3 is a fragmentary, sectional view taken through 33 of FIGURE 1, showing particularly the operating apparatus, the apparatus being shown in its extended position by solid lines and in its folded posi tion by broken lines;
FIGURE 4 is an enlarged, fragmentary, sectional view taken through 4-4 of FIGURE 5, showing the window slightly ajar;
FIGURE 5 is an enlarged, fragmentary, sectional view taken through 5-5 of FIGURE 3.
The window operating apparatus is adapted for use on various types of windows. For purposes of illustration, the apparatus is shown installed in a metal window, which comprises a fixed window frame 1 and a movable window frame 2; the movable window frame being connected to the fixed window frame 1 by a pair of pivoting and supporting brackets 3 of the type more fully disclosed in Patent No. 2,784,459, issued March 12, 1957.
The window operating apparatus includes a mounting plate 4 which is attached by screws to the center of the lower side of the fixed window frame 1. The mounting plate 4 carries a pair of adjacent pivot members 5 which journal a pair of inner struts 6.
The inner struts 6 are movable between a position overlying the lower side of the fixed window frame 1 and an outwardly diverging position. The inner struts 6 are joined by pivotal connections 7 to outer struts 8, which in turn are connected by pivot means 9 and hinges 10 to the underside of the movable window frame 2.
Secured to the fixed window frame 1 and extending inwardly therefrom is a housing 11 having inner and outer bearings 12 and 13, which journal a screw shaft 3,685,797 Patented Apr. 16, 1963 14 located in a plane midway between the pivot members 5.
The screw shaft 14 is provided with a traveler nut 15 having laterally extending lugs 16 which receive pivot members 17. The pivot members 5 journal links 18 which are connected by pivot members 19 to the inner struts 6, intermediate their ends but at points near the pivot members 5.
The inner struts 6 extend beyond the pivotal connections 7 to form opening fingers 20. Similarly, the outer struts 8 continue beyond the pivotal connections 7 to form closing fingers 21.
Operation of the window operating apparatus is as follows:
Movement of the movable window frame 2 is accom plished primarily by the opposed torques applied to the inner struts 6, resulting from the coaction of the links 18 and the pivot members 5 and 19. As the movable window frame 2 approaches its closed position, the links 18 exert maximum force on the inner struts 6 so that these members readily move into their folded positions within the fixed window frame 1.
However, because of the necessarily slight play of the various pivotal connections, this movement alone cannot draw the movable window frame 2 tightly into place. This final movement of the movable window frame 2 is accomplished by the closing fingers 21, which as the movable window frame 2 approaches its fully closed position, bear against the fixed window frame 1 and act as fulcrum elements, about which the pivotal connections 7 and the pivot means 9 move in a direction toward the fixed window frame 1.
Thus as the inner struts 6 move to their fully closed positions within the fixed window frame 1, the inward movement of the pivotal connections 7 cause corresponding inward movement of the pivot means 9 so as to draw the movable window frame 2 tightly into its closed position.
Conversely, when the screw shaft 14 is turned to open the window, the opening fingers 20 bear against the movable window frame 2. The pivot members 5 function as fulcrum members about which the inner struts 6 pivot, so that these members operate directly to initiate opening movement of the movable window frame 2 until the pivot means 9 have moved beyond the plane between the.
pivot members 5 and pivotal connections 7 and the torque applied to the inner struts 6 can act through the pivotal connections 7 to force the movable window frame 2 to its fully open position.
It will be observed that because of the spaced relation of the pivot means 9 and the action of the closing fingers 21, the movable window frame 2 is drawn tightly into place even if it be warped.
Also, it will be observed that the opening fingers 20 aid in freeing the window by bearing near the corners thereof even though the window may tend to bind.
It should be noted that the mounting plate 4 slopes upwardly slightly so that the struts move outwardly and upwardly to correspond to upward movement of the lower side of the movable frame 2. This upward slope is indicated by the angle A in FIGURE 2, and by the slight angular position of the strut extensions in FIG- URE 5.
While a particular embodiment of this invention has been shown and described, it is not intended to limit the same to the exact details of the construction set forth, and it embraces such changes, modifications, and equivalents of the parts and their formation and arrangement as come within the purview of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. An operating device for windows having a fixed frame, a movable frame, and means for supporting the movable frame for pivotal movement between a closed nesting position relative to the fixed frame and an open extended position, said device comprising: a pair of inner struts pivotally connected to a side of said fixed frame at its central portion; a pair of outer struts pivotally connected to said movable frame; means pivotally interconnecting said inner and outer struts to permit movement between a superposed folded condition between said frames, when said frames are nested, and an extended substantially collinear condition, when said movable frame is -in its open position; means for pivoting said inner struts thereby to move said struts between their extended and superposed conditions; and extensions continuing from said outer struts beyond said interconnecting pivot means and engageable with said fixed frame as said movable frame approaches its nesting position, to form fulcrurns for pivotal movement of said outer struts during final pivotal movement of said struts to their folded conditions.
2. An operating device for windows having a fixed frame, a movable frame, and means for supporting the movable frame for pivotal movement between a closed nesting position relative to the fixed frame and an open extended position, said device comprising: a pair of inner struts pivotally connected to a side of said fixed frame at its central portion; a pair of outer struts pivotally connected to said movable frame; means pivotally interconnecting said inner and outer struts to permit movement between a superposed folded condition between said frames, when said frames are nested, and an extended substantially collinear condition, when said movable frame is in its open position; means for pivoting said inner struts thereby to move said struts between their extended and superposed conditions; extensions continuing from said outer strut beyond said interconnecting pivot means and engageable with said fixed frame as said movable frame approaches its nesting position, to form fulcrurns for pivotal movement of said outer struts during final pivotal movement of said struts to their folded conditions; and extensions continuing from said inner struts beyond said interconnecting pivot means and engageable with said movable frame to initiate opening movement of said movable frame from its nesting position.
3. An operating device for windows having a fixed frame, a movable frame, and means for supporting the movable frame for pivotal movement between a closed nesting position relative to the fixed frame and an open extended position, said device comprising: a mounting member secured to the central portion of one side of said fixed frame; a pair of inner struts pivotally connected to said mounting member for movement between laterally disposed positions within the plane of said fixed frame and outwardly directed positions; means for effecting simultaneous pivotal movement of said inner struts between said positions; a pair of outer struts pivotally connected to said movable frame and said inner struts for movement between positions overlying said inner struts, to dispose said movable frame in nesting relation with said fixed frame, and outwardly extended positions, to dispose said movable frame in its open position relative to said fixed frame; and extensions continuing from said outer struts beyond their pivotal connections with said inner struts, said extensions being engageable with said fixed frame as said movable frame approaches its mating position to fulcrum said outer struts into overlapping relation with said inner struts and urge said movable frame toward its nesting position.
4. An operating device for windows having a fixed frame, a movable frame, and means for supporting the movable frame for pivotal movement between a closed nesting position relative to the fixed frame and an open extended position, said device comprising: a mounting member secured to the central portion of one side of said fixed frame; a pair of inner struts pivotally connected to said mounting member for movement between laterally disposed positions within the plane of said fixed frame and outwardly directed positions; means for effecting simultaneous pivotal movement of said inner struts between said positions; a pair of outer struts pivotally connected to said movable frame and said inner struts for movement between positions overlying said inner struts, to dispose said movable frame in nested relation with said fixed frame, and outwardly extended positions, to dispose said movable frame in its open position relative to said fixed frame; a first set of extensions continuing from said inner struts beyond their pivotal connections with said inner struts, said first set of extensions being engageable with said movable frame during initial movement thereof away from its nesting position to facilitate movement of said outer struts from theif fiverlying relation with said inner struts; and a second set of extensions continuing from said outer struts beyond their pivotal connections with said inner struts, said second set of extensions being engageable with said fixed frame as said movable frame approaches its nesting position to fulcrum said outer struts into overlapping relation with said inner struts and urge said movable frame toward its nesting position.

Claims (1)

1. AN OPERATING DEVICE FOR WINDOWS HAVING A FIXED FRAME, A MOVABLE FRAME, AND MEANS FOR SUPPORTING THE MOVABLE FRAME FOR PIVOTAL MOVEMENT BETWEEN A CLOSED NESTING POSITION RELATIVE TO THE FIXED FRAME AND AN OPEN EXTENDED POSITION, SAID DEVICE COMPRISING: A PAIR OF INNER STRUTS PIVOTALLY CONNECTED TO A SIDE OF SAID FIXED FRAME AT ITS CENTRAL PORTION; A PAIR OF OUTER STRUTS PIVOTALLY CONNECTED TO SAID MOVABLE FRAME; MEANS PIVOTALLY INTERCONNECTING SAID INNER AND OUTER STRUTS TO PERMIT MOVEMENT BETWEEN A SUPERPOSED FOLDED CONDITION BETWEEN SAID FRAMES, WHEN SAID FRAMES ARE NESTED, AND AN EXTENDED SUBSTANTIALLY COLLINEAR CONDITION, WHEN SAID MOVABLE FRAME IS IN ITS OPEN POSITION; MEANS FOR PIVOTING SAID INNER STRUTS THEREBY TO MOVE SAID STRUTS BETWEEN THEIR EXTENDED AND SUPERPOSED CONDITIONS; AND EXTENSIONS CONTINUING FROM SAID OUTER STRUTS BEYOND SAID INTERCONNECTING PIVOT MEANS AND ENGAGEABLE WITH SAID FIXED FRAME AS SAID MOVABLE FRAME APPROACHES ITS NESTING POSITION, TO FORM FULCRUMS FOR PIVOTAL MOVEMENT OF SAID OUTER STRUTS DURING FINAL PIVOTAL MOVEMENT OF SAID STRUTS TO THEIR FOLDED CONDITIONS.
