(Cl. 229-40) This invention relates to multi-pak cartons formed of paperboard, and more particularly to an open end sleevetype carton for holding two parallel rows of generally cylindrically shaped objects, such as cans or bottles, arranged in'side-by-side relation.
The invention comprehends an improved center retaining member on one wall of the carton adapted to restrict the movement of the containers relative to said carton wall.
An object of the invention is the provision of a tubular carton of the type described, formed from a unitary blank of foldable paperboard, having an integral center retaining member.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide, in a carton of the type described, an integral center retaining member, formed from end portions of the panels of one wall of the carton, having recesses for receiving portions of the packaged articles to restrict their movement relative to said one carton wall.
These and other objects of the invention will be apparent from an examination of the following description and drawings, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a carton embodying features of the invention;
FIGURE 2 is a horizontal section taken on line 2-2 of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is a fragmentary transverse vertical section taken on line 3--3 of FIGURE 2;
FIGURE 4 is a plan view of the blank from which the carton illustrated in FIGURES l to 3 may be formed;
FIGURE 5 is a fragmentary view similar to FIGURE 1, but illustrating a modified form of the invention;
- FIGURE 6 is a perspective view of a portion of the center retaining member of the carton illustrated in FIGURE 5;
FIGURE 7 is a transverse vertical section taken on line 7-7 of FIGURE 6;
FIGURE 8 is a plan view of the blank from which the carton illustrated in FIGURES 5 to 7 may be formed;

FIGURE 10 is a horizontal section taken on line 1010 of FIGURE 9;
FIGURE 11 is a fragmentary plan view of a portion of the blank from which the carton illustrated in FIG- URES 9 and 10 may be formed; and
FIGURES 12 and 13 are fragmentary views similar to FIGURE 9, but illustrating yet other forms of the invention.
It will be understood that certain elements have been intentionally omitted from certain views where they are illustrated to better advantage in other views.
Referring now to the drawings for a better understanding of the invention, it will be seen that one embodiment of the invention is illustrated in FIGURES 1 through 4.
As best seen in FIGURE 1, the carton includes a pair of spaced parallel top and bottom walls 10 and 12, respectively, interconnected by a pair of spaced parallel side walls 14, which have their opposite edges hingedly con nected to the top and bottom walls along parallel carton hinge lines 16.
Bottom wall 12 is formed from a pair of co-planer bot- 2 tom wall panels 18 having their outboard edges hingedly connected, along hinge lines 16, to corresponding bottom edges of the respective side walls 14, and having their inboard end portions folded and interconnected to form an inwardly projecting center retaining member 20 extending longitudinally of the carton between two parallel rows of packaged articles.
At its inboard edge, each of the bottom wall panels 18 has hingedly attached thereto a longitudinally extending relatively narrow first strip 22 which is folded inwardly along fold line 23 and projects inwardly into the carton at approximately right angles to panel 18. Opposed surfaces of the respective bottom wall panel strips 22 may be secured to each other in any desired manner, such as by the application of adhesive therebetween.
At its inner or upper edge each first strip 22 has hingedly attached thereto along a hinge line 24 a downwardly and outwardly projecting relatively narrowlongitudinally extending second strip 26. Second strip 26 is of preferably the same general dimensions as first strip 22, but at its lower or outer extremities is provided with a plurality of recesses 28, the purpose of which is described later in the specification.
It will be noted that the carton illustrated in FIGURES 1 through 3 of the drawings may be formed from the unitary blank of foldable paperboard, indicated generally at 30, shown in FIGURE 4 of the drawings.
If desired the top wall 10 may be provided with a plurality of finger holes 32 to aid in handling of the carton. Also, both the top and bottom walls may be provided with a plurality of chime engaging tabs 34 cut from the respective walls of the carton and folded inwardly into engagement with the ends of the cans. This feature is not new in the art, and is therefore not directly connected to the invention which forms the basis of this application.
The basic purpose and function of the center retaining member 22 is best illustrated in FIGURE 3 of the drawings, which shows the relationship of the second strips 26 of the chimes C of the cans K located within the carton. The recesses 28 in the center retaining member second strips 26 serve to receive end portions of the cans within the carton, with the downwardly facing abutment surfaces 36 presented by the second strips 26 in the recesses 28 serving to engage the upwardly facing surfaces of the can chimes so as to restrict movement of the cans relative to the bottomwall 12 of the carton.
Now turning to FIGURES 5 through 8 of the drawings, it will be seen that a modified form of the invention is shown therein. In this embodiment, many of the features are common to those of that previous embodiment, so that, where possible, corresponding numerals have been used to designate related elements.
The primary distinguishing feature of this embodiment resides in the construction of the central retaining member, best seen in FIGURE 6 of the drawings. In this arrangement the second strip 26a of the center retaining member 20a has hingedly attached, at locations between the recesses 28a, a plurality of flaps 40 which are hingedly attached to the lower edges of the strips 26a along fold lines 42. Flaps 40, if desired, may be adhesively secured to the upper surface of the related bottom wall panels so as to limit their movement relative to the bottom wall and thereby make a more rigid structure the center retaining member 20a. 9
This carton like that of the previously described embodiment is particularly well suited for chimed cans, and functions in the same manner as the previously described embodiment.
Now turning to FIGURES 9 through 11 of the drawings, it will be seen that another embodiment of the invention is shown. In this embodiment, the carton is suitable for 'use with unchimed cans, or cans having chimes at only one end thereof, as well as for other cylin- ,to their lower or outer edges, along fold lines 52, relatively narrow longitudinally extending third strips 50. Third strips 50 are bent inboardly toward first strips 22b of their respective bottom wall panels so as to lie under the second strip 26b in parallel abutting engagement with the upper surfaces of their respective bottom wall panels. If desired they may be secured in any desired manner, such as by adhesive, to their respective bottom wall panels.
In this embodiment of the invention, the respective second strips 26b of the center retaining member 20b are provided with a pluralityof longitudinally spaced generally arcuately shaped recesses 28b which serve to receive and retain end portionsof the packaged articles so as to restrict their movement relative to the bottom wall of the carton.
In FIGURE 12 another embodiment of the invention is disclosed. In this embodiment, which is similar in certain respects to the embodiment illustrated in FIGURE 9, the bottom wall panels 18c of the carton are secured to each other in overlapping relationship, with the center retaining member 200 being formed entirely from one of the bottom wall panels 18c. In this embodiment the uppermost or innermost bottom wall panel 180 has hingedly attached to its inboard edge, on a fold line 62, an inwardly extending first strip 60. Strip 60 has, hingedly attached to its upper edge, on a fold line 64, a downwardly extending second strip 66 which, in turn has hingedly attached to its lower or outer edge, on a fold line 69, a third strip 68. Third strips 69 may be secured in any desired manner, such as by adhesive, to the upper .surface of the other bottom wall panel 18c. In this embodiment both the first and second strips may be provided with longitudinally spaced recesses 28c for the receipt of lower portions of the packaged articles.
The embodiment of FIGURE 13 is similar to that of the previously described embodiment, with the center retaining member 20d being formed entirely from one of the bottom wall panels 18d.
In this embodiment a first longitudinally extending strip 70 is hingedly attached, along fold line 72, to the inboard extremity of one of the bottom wall panels 18d. The first strip extends upwardly or inwardly toward the center of the carton and has hingedly attached, thereto on a fold line 74, a second strip 76 which extends downwardly or outwardly toward the bottom wall of the carton and which has hingedly attached, on a fold line 79, to its lower or outer edge'a third strip 78. Third strip 78 may be secured in any desired manner, such as by adhesive, to the upwardly facing surface of the same bottom wall panel 18d to which the first strip is attached.
In this-embodiment, like the previous embodiment, both the first and second strips may be provided with longitudinally spaced recesses 28d which serve to retain lower orend portions of the packaged articles.
Although in each of the cartons illustrated and described, the center retaining member is formed from coplaner panels of the carton bottom wall, the entire arrangement could, if desired, be reversed, with the bottom wall being formed as a single panel and the center retaining member being formed from co-planer panels of the top wall.
Thus. it will be understood, that in each of the embodiments of the invention heretofore disclosed and described, one wall of the carton is formed from a pair of coplaner panels having inboard portions interconnected and folded to provide a center retaining member with longitudinally spaced recesses adapted to receive portions of the articles packaged within the carton and thereby restrict the movement of the articles relative to the wall of the carton.
