Specification of Letters Patent No.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. GRIM- sHAw, of the city and State of New York, have invented and made a certain new and useful Improvement in Mangles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is a plan of said mangle, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.

The nature of my said invention consists in the combination of three rollers the upper one being stationary, the lower one pressed up by a spring, weight, or similar device and connected to a hinged table, and the center roller being removable and having the goods to be mangled wound thereinto, within an apron; the parts being so arranged that when the roller is placed upon the table and the upper roller revolved the said intermediate roller is drawn in and remains between the upper and lower rollers while being revolved under great pressure for smoothing the articles surrounding the middle roller; and upon turning the upper roller in the reverse direction the said middle roller is rolled out onto the table ready for the removal of the goods, and supplying others.

In the drawing A, is a fly wheel or pulley to which competent power is applied by a crank or otherwise. G is a pinion rotating the wheel C, on the shaft of the upper roller P, the parts being sustained by the side frames K.

D is the lower roller, the journal boxes J of which are fitted in mortices in the side frames K, so that said roller can rise and fall, the journals being acted on by a cross bar and connections L, to the levers H which are weighted as at B by a box filled with sand or otherwise, and M is a cross bar and hooks forming the fulcrums of said levers H there being one lever on each side near the frames K see Fig. 1.

sustained at the roller D, by the journals of said roller passing through them so that the edge of the table next the roller D, rises and falls with said roller, while the outer edge is sustained by the struts 0, 0, forming hinges or supports at this point. The roller F is provided with an apron, one end of which is attached to said roller, and upon this apron the clothes or articles to be mangled are laid and the whole wound upon the roller. This roller F is shorter than the distance between the frames K, K, sufficient to allow the short axes of said roller to project at each end of the roller and not come in contact with said frames.

N, N are stops attached to the inner faces of the frames K, K, beyond the perpendicular line from the axis of the roller P to that of the roller D.

The table E being slightly inclined and the roller F placed thereon with the goods wound up in the apron as indicated by the red lines said roller runs down between the rollers P and D, and upon revolving P in the direction of the red arrow said roller F is drawn in between P and D, the roller D, descending vsuiiiciently to admit said roller F and its surroundings. The rolling motion would carry the roller F through and out the other side were not the journals of F stopped by the pieces N. These being placed as aforesaid insure that the roller F will remain in place even when the mangle is stopped, but upon rotating the roller P in the opposite direction the roller F comes out upon the able E, ready for replenishing.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination of the rollers P, F and D, and table E when the parts are arranged and operate in the manner and for the purposes specified.
