(Cl. 29-76) This invention relates to a filing device of extremely simple construction capable of being readily applied to a part of a distributor and supported thereby while a file member, forming a part of the device, is manually moved back and forth between the distributor points for accurately filing the point faces.
Another object of the invention is to provide a filing device having means for yieldably engaging the arm carrying the movable contact point whereby yielding pressure is exerted on the movable point for urging it into engagement with the file which is located between the points, so that the faces of the two points will be filed to approximately the same extent.
Still a further object of the invention is to provide a filing device capable of being yieldably clamped to a stationary part of the distributor for holding the file in a correct position parallel to the contact point faces during movement of the file back and forth between said faces to insure filing of the faces parallel to one another.
Various other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter become more fully apparent from the following description of the drawing, illustrating a presently preferred embodiment thereof, and wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a side elevational View of the filing device, partially in section, showing said device in an applied position;
FIGURE 2 is a view similar to FIGURE 1 but showing the filing device being applied to distributor parts which support the contact points;
FIGURE 3 is an elevational view looking from right to left of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially along the line 4-4 of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 5 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view taken substantially along the line 55 of FIGURE 1, and
FIGURE 6 is a side elevational view of the file element, shown detached from the filing device.
Referring more specifically to the drawing, the filing device in its entirety is designated generally 8 and includes an elongated metal strip 9 having a slot 10 extending inwardly from one end thereof and forming corresponding furcations 11 each of which has an armately bowed portion adjacent its free end forming a rounded projection 12. The projections 12 extend from an inner side of the strip 9. Said strip 9, beyond and adjacent the slot 1% is provided with an opening 13 which is located midway of the side edges of the strip. The other end of the strip 9 is turned outwardly at approximately a right angle to form a handle 14 which extends from the outer side thereof.
One end of a strip 15 of spring metal is secured to the outer side of the strip 9 by a fastening 16, which fastening is located approximately midway between the handle 14 and opening 13. The spring 15 extends lengthwise of the strip 9 away from the handle 14- and has an unsecured opposite end 17 which partially overlaps the slot 10 and which is flared away from the outer sides of the furcations 11. The spring 15 has an opening 18 which aligns with the opening 13.
A bolt 19 extends inwardly through the openings 18 and 13 and has a head 2% which bears against the outer side of the spring 15. A file, designated generally 21, includes a disc-shaped end 22 both sides of which define cutting faces 23. The disc-shaped end 22 has a central Kenn;

file 21 thereon 21 W spaced therefrom by a washer 27 which is mounted on the bolt 19. The handle 26 extends away from the strip 9 and is preferably spaced a lesser distance from the bolt 19 than the handle 14.
A finger member 28, formed from a strip of metal which is relatively rigid, has an opening 29 near one end thereof through which the bolt 1% loosely extends. The finger member 28 is mounted on the other side of the file 21 and a second washer 3t fits loosely on the bolt 19 between said finger member and the file. The longer end of the finger member 23 extends downwardly from the bolt 19 and has a terminal portion 31 which is flared away from the disc portion 22. The finger member 28 is provided with an outwardly bowed portion 32 adjacent said terminal portion 31, which is bowed away from the disc 22. and which has a concave inner side opening toward said disc.
A nut 33 threadedly engages the bolt 19 and a washer 34 is disposed on the bolt and against the inner side of said nut. A compression spring 35 is disposed on the bolt 19 between the washer 34 and the finger member 28.
To illustrate the application and use of the filing device 8, parts of a conventional distributor have been illustrated in FIGURES l and 2 including a mounting plate 36 having an upstanding wall 37 adjacent one end thereof. A stationary contact 38 is secured to the inner side of the wall 37. A post 39 extends upwardly from the other end of the plate 36. One end of an arm 40 is swingably mounted on the post 39. A movable contact 41 is secured to an inner side of the other end of the arm 41 for swinging movement therewith toward and away from the wall 37 and into and out of engagement with the stationary contact 38. The arm 4% is biased, as by a spring 42, to swing toward the wall 37 and to thereby normally maintain the contact 41 in abutting engagement with the contact 38. The other outer side of the arm 40 has a reinforcing rib 43 extending from end-toend thereof which is rounded in cross section.
To apply the filing device 8, the handle 14 is grasped to support the parts at an incline as seen in FIGURE 2. The furcations 11 are displaced downwardly along the inner side of the wall 37 and so as to straddle the contacts 38 and 41. The projections 12 engage the inner side of the arm 40 as the strip 9 is displaced downwardly from its position of FIGURE 2 for displacing the arm and the contact 41 away from the contact 38 and wall 37. As the strip 9 is moved downwardly, the flared end 17 of the spring 15 engages the outer side of the wall 37 and the filing device 8 is then swung toward an upright position as seen in FIGURE 1. Before the projections 12 clear the arm 49 and before the filing device 8 has been swung completely to its upright position of FIG- URE 1 from its inclined position of FIGURE 2, a peripheral portion of the disc 22 enters the space between the faces of the contacts 33 and 41. At the same time, the flared end 31 engages and rides over a part of the rib 43 to deflect the spring member 28 away from the file portion 22 and to permit the outwardly bowed portion 32 of the finger member to snap over the rib 43 as the filing device 8 reaches a fully applied position, as seen 1n FIGURE 1. The spring 15 is flexed away from the strip 9 by the upper end of the wall 37 assuming a position between the strip 9 and spring 15, as seen in FIGURE 1, for displacing the screw 19 from left to right, to thereby further compress the spring 35 and to cause said spring to exert an increased pressure on the finger member 28 and to tend to rock the portion 32 thereof toward the disc;22;fo1 urging theface of the contact 41yieldab ly against the file face 23 which faces toward said contact.
With the filing device 8 thus applied and held with one handby the handle 14, the handle- 26 is grasped with the. fingers ofthe other hand to oscillate the file to cause' the file faces 23 to oscillate back and forth between the faces ot the contact points 38 and 41 for grinding said contact point faces uniformly and parallel. Thewashers 27 and 3!) have loose fitting engagementon the bolt 19' to oscillate- With the file 21. The engagement of the finger portion 32 with the rib-43 prevents the finger member '28 from turning on the bolt 19 during the filing operation, so that only the file- 21 and washers 27 and 330i oscillate. It will thus be seen that the strip 9 combines with the spring 15' to form a spring clamp-type holder for detachably mounting the filing device on the wall 37. Additionally, the finger memberZS cjo operatesiwith said spring clamp or holder for. maintaining. the filing device in a correctly applied position during! the filing operation and to preventthe arm 40 and movable contact 41 fromyielding away from thefile face 2 3: engaged thereby.
Various modifications andchanges are contemplated, and may be resorted to withoutdeparting from the functio'n' or scope of the invention as hereinafter defined by theappended claims;

prising: a holder having a clamping portion, ajournal member supported by and projecting laterally from one side of said holder, a file rotatively mounted on said journal member in spaced relation to said holder, a finger member carried by said journal member, said file being disposed between the holder and finger member, and spring. means carried. by said journal member and urgingly pressing said finger member and said file toward the holder.
2. A filing device for distributor contact points, comprising; a holder having a clamping portion, a journal member supported by and projecting laterally fromione side of saidholder, a file rotatively and slidably mounted on said journal member, a finger member carried by said journal member, spacer elements supported by the journal member on opposite sides of the file and between said holder and said finger member, and springimeans carried by said journal member and urgingly pressing said finger member and said file toward the holder.

A FILING DEVICE FOR DISTRIBUTOR CONTACT POINTS, COMPRISING: A HOLDER HAVING A CLAMPING PORTION, A JOURNAL MEMBER SUPPORTED BY AND PROJECTING LATERALLY FROM ONE SIDE OF SAID HOLDER, A FILE ROTATIVELY MOUNTED ON SAID JOURNAL MEMBER IN SPACED RELATION TO SAID HOLDER, A FINGER MEMBER CARRIED BY SAID JOURNAL MEMBER, SAID FILE BEING DISPOSED BETWEEN THE HOLDER AND FINGER MEMBER, AND SPRING MEANS CARRIED BY SAID JOURNAL MEMBER AND URGINGLY PRESSING SAID FINGER MEMBER AND SAID FILE TOWARD THE HOLDER.
