(Cl; 150-49) This invention relates to a releasable binder intended especially for use in holding one or more transparent wingtype envelopes within the cover of a pass case and particularly to envelopes provided with opposed edge notches in line with their folding sections.

The principal object of this invention is to provide a single piece binder to accommodate the above-described envelopes without the need of having end portions of the binder pass through openings or piercingsin the envelopes and the pass case cover.

A further object of the invention is to provide a single piece binder that is formed to snugly fit about the folded end of a pass case cover, and which binder is formed with end extensions shaped to provide suitable recesses in which the cover and the several winged envelopes may be readily assembled and easily removed.

A further object of the invention is to provide an improved pass case binder of the kind described that is easy and inexpensive to manufacture, and reliable and convenient in use.

FIG. 6 is a perspective view of a portion of the cover to show particularly the folded area and the pre-creased recesses.

In FIG. 1, my invention is shown in connection with a pass case which consists of a foldable leather casing or cover It and one or more winged-type envelopes 11 having a fold line 12 at their transverse centers with notches 13 in their opposite edges in line with the fold line. The cover It) also has a fold line 14 with opposed edge notches 15 in line therewith.

The binder for holding the casing and winged envelopes together is preferably made from a single piece of sheet stock and consists of a back bar 18 formed with a U-shape section throughout its length to give it strength and provide a better fit to the fold line of the casing as will be described later.

The opposite ends of back bar 18 are provided with upwardly extending identical standards 19 which initially are extended straps projecting from the opposite ends of the back bar and of less width than said back bar. Each standard 19 consists of an upright 28, an upwardly and inwardly biased portion 21, a reverse bend or bight 22, an outwardly and downwardly biased portion 23, a downward extension 2 and a terminal pad 25.

As best shown in FIG. 3, the uprights 29 are integral with and perpendicular to the ends of the back bar 18. The reverse bend or bight 22 joins together the two biased portions 21 and 23 in spaced relationship. The inner faces of the biased parts 23 and the downward extensions 24 jointly with the adjacent surfaces of the back bar form diverging angular recesses 26 facing each other ,:and into which the edges of the pass case cover and winged envelopes are adapted to be received. The terminal pad 25 rests within the hollow of the U-shape back bar 18 and provides a support for each standard to prevent the latter from collapsing inwardly due to any excessive force upon their outer extremities.

The manner in which the winged envelopes and easing are assembled into the pass case binder is best shown in FIG. 4.

As pointed out above, the winged envelopes, as well as the casing, have opposed notches l3 and 15 respectively in their opposite edges in line with the folding area of said members. The casing 10 will first be assembled to the binder by inserting the notch 15 on one edge of said casing into one of the recesses 26 of the binder and then the mid-portion of said casing may be bent upwardly along its folding area and the opposite edge notch slipped into the opposite binder recess 26. The fact that the casing has a pre-set folding area, as pointed out above, will permit the folding area to be snugly received into the hollow of the back bar and also permit the edges of the casing adjacent the base of the recess to wedge underneath the terminal pads 25 for firmly retaining the casing fiixed relations with the binder.

The winged envelopes 11 with their opposed notches 13 will likewise first have one of their notches aligned with one of the binder recesses 26 and then by bowing the rnidpo-rtion upwardly, the opposite binder recess may be slipped into the opposite binder recess and when released, the envelopes will flatten out and be suitably retained by the standards of the binder.

It is to be noted that there is sufiicient space in the binder recess 26 so that several winged envelopes can be assembled to the cover and whether one or several envelopes are assembled, the binder will be tightly held against the casing.

Even after the recess 26 in its normal state is filled with envelopes, other envelopes may be added due to the fact that each standard 19 is formed up from flat stock which allows for some degree of resiliency, thus allowing the recess 26 to expand in width.

One form of the invention is presented herein for the purpose of exemplification, but it will be appreciated that the invention is suceptible of changes and other structural modified forms coming equally within the scope of the claims.

What I claim is:

1. A one-piece binder for releasably holding one or more winged envelopes to a pass case folder wherein said envelopes have their opposite edges notched in line with a fold line, said binder comprising a longitudinal back bar of U-shaped cross-section, and a pair of standards formed as an integral part of and extending upwardly from the opposite ends of said back bar and being of less width than said back bar, said standards being formed with means to provide in conjunction with the adjacent surfaces of said back bar diverging angular recesses facing toward C9 each other, said an' ular recesses adapted to receive the notched portions of said winged envelopes.

2. A single piece binder comprising a longitudinal back bar Ll-shaped in cross-section having a standard at each opposite end which initially is in the form of a strap of less width than and integral with the opposite end of said bar, each standard consisting of an upright, an upwardly and inwardly biased portion, a return bend or bight, an outwardly and downwardly biased portion, and a downward extension normal to and terminating in the hollow of the U-shaped back bar, the inner faces of said latter biased portions and downward extensions jointly with the adjacent surfaces of said back bar providing diverging recesses facing each other for the purpose of receiving the opposite edges of a pass case cover and insert envelopes.

A single piece binder comprising a longitudinal U-shaped back bar having a standard at each opposite end, each standard consisting of an upright, an upwardly and inwardly biassed portion, a return bend or bight, an outwardly and downwardly biased portion, and a downward extension normal to and terminating in the hollow of the U-shaped back bar, the inner surfaces of said latter biased portions and downward extensions jointly with the adjacent surfaces of said back bar providing diverging recesses facing each the for the purpose of receiving the opposite edges of a pass case cover and insert envelopes.

4. A single piece binder as defined in claim 3 wherein the downward extension is formed with an end pad resting in the hollow portion of said U-shaped back bar.

1. A ONE-PIECE BINDER FOR RELEASABLY HOLDING ONE OR MORE WINGED ENVELOPES TO A PASS CASE FOLDER WHEREIN SAID ENVELOPES HAVE THEIR OPPOSITE EDGES NOTCHED IN LINE WITH A FOLD LINE, SAID BINDER COMPRISING A LONGITUDINAL BACK BAR OF U-SHAPED CROSS-SECTION, AND A PAIR OF STANDARDS FORMED AS AN INTEGRAL PART OF AND EXTENDING UPWARDLY FROM THE OPPOSITE ENDS OF SAID BACK BAR AND BEING OF LESS WIDTH THAN SAID BACK BAR, SAID STANDARDS BEING FORMED WITH MEANS TO PROVIDE IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE ADJACENT SURFACES OF SAID BACK BAR DIVERGING ANGULAR RECESSES FACING TOWARD EACH OTHER, SAID ANGULAR RECESS ADAPTED TO RECEIVE THE NOTCHED PORTIONS OF SAID WINGED ENVELOPES.
