A. O. PALMER.
ELEGTRO MAGNETIC ANNUNOIATOR.
No. 307,866. Patented Nov. 11, 1884.
N. PETERS. Pnommna m. Washinglcn. n. c.
AUGUSTUS O. PALMER,
OF UTIOA, NEWV YORK.
ELECTRO-MAGNETIC ANNUNCIATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,866, dated November 11, 1884.
Application filed April 12, 1884. (N 0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS O. PALMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Electric Annunciators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to provide an annunciator especially adapted for night-bell attachments in an exchange for telephones or burglar-alarms, or where a continuous sound ing of an alarm is required.
My invention consists in the combination of an armature, a plate on which is the number or other character, and a blind therefor, with an electro-magnet, substantially as hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view, and Fig. 2 a side View, of an electric annunciator embodying my invention, the blind being up; Fig. 3 is a front view, and Fig. 4 avertical section,of the same, the blind being down. Fig. 5 is a plan view.
The supporting-frame A has a vertical part, a, and a horizontal part or arm, Z).
To the part a is secured an electro-magnet, B, being fastened thereto in a horizontal position by screws 0 c, and insulated therefrom by means of washers d of insulating material. The armature O, which may be of suitable size and shape to form a plate on which is the numeral 0, or other required character, is pivoted to the arm b at f, which is at a distance from the face of the armature and plate to the rear so that it willincline to the poles of the magnet. At the lower part of the armature and plate 0 a blind, D, is pivoted by means of a pivot at g, held by projections h h, so that the blind when up inclines to the armature. A rod or arm, E, extends from the vertical part of the frame A and through the plate 0 to meet the blind, as shown. The coils of the electro-magnet are in the main-line circuit, the projecting wires i i being a part of said circuit, there being, of course, the required battery and make -and break pieces in said circuit. The local circuit includes a battery,
j, and alarm device, as the bell is. the wires of this circuit is connected to the frame A, as at Z, and the other to the core of the magnet, as by means of one of the screws 0. The blind being up, as in Figs. 1, 2, and 5, when the main-line circuit is closed the armature is attracted to the poles of the magnet, and swings so as to bring the blind D against the arm E, whereby the blind is thrown down, taking the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4. Astop, m, may prevent the blind from falling to a vertical position. When the blind is thrown down, the figure on the plate 0 will be exposed to view, and the blind will cause the armature to press against the poles of the magnet. Thus the local circuit will be completed by means of the frame A, armature, and core of the magnet, causing the electric bell 70,. or other alarm, to sound until the blind is raised.
I claim as my i nvention 1. The combination of an electro magnet, an armature and plate pivoted to the supporting frame, as specified, and a blind pivoted to said armature and plate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the frame having vertical part a and arm b, electro-magnet, armature and plate G, and blind D, said armature and plate being pivoted to said frame, as specified, and said blind being pivoted to said plate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of frame A, electromagnet, armature and plate 0, blind D, and arm E, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. In an electric annunciator, an armature having a numeral or other character thereon, and a blind for covering the same, substantially as specified.
5. In an electric annunciator, an armature pivoted to the supporting-frame, and a blind pivoted to said armature, substantially as described.
AUGUSTUS O. PALMER. Vitnesses:
