To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ELDRIDGE J. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Titusville, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,

and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a view in perspective of my swing. Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views. Fig. 4c is a sectional detail view. Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views.

This invention has relation to improvements in swings; and it has for its object to provide a cheap and simple means for bracing the frame and preventing the joints from spreading or moving apart. Another end in view is to provide the backs and seatsof the carriage with sufficient spring or elasticity to assist the occupants in propelling the swing.

Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A indicates the swing-supporting frame, which consists, essentially, of the vertically-inclined beams a, which are properly braced at their lower ends, and the transverse horizontal beam B, which is firmly secured between the adjacent upper ends of the said beams a, as shown. The horizontal cross-beam B is provided on its under side, near opposite ends, with vertically-depending lugs b, the outer walls of which are plain, as shown, to receive the cross-arms O 0. These cross-arms are beveled on their outer longitudinal sides, as at c, to conform to the inclination of the supporting-beams a, to which they are respectively bolted, as shown at (Z, thus making the horizontal crOssbeam, the cross-arms, and vertically-inclined beams a rigid with relation to each other.

D indicates the parallel swing-bars, which are pivotally suspended at their upper ends from the outer ends of the cross-arms O O, and connected at their lower ends to the carriage, as will be presently explained.

E indicates the carriage, which is made in two sections, 6 6, each section being provided 7c, are recessed or shouldered, as shown at Z,

to engage each other, and are connected by a vertical bolt, m, which may extend down and through a cleat or strip of suitable material on the under side of the carriage, and up through a longitudinal bar, F, which is provided with shoulders n n, to engage shoulders on the upper edges of the side walls, 70. The lower ends of the suspended swing-bars are connected by a pivotbolt to the opposite ends of the bars F. By this construction it will be perceived that the joints of the seat are made very substantial, and, from the peculiar construction of the connecting parts, strain is removed from the weakest portion of the carriage. I

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a swing, the combination, with the vertically-inclined beams a, of the horizontal cross-beam B, having the depending lugs b, and the cross-arms O 0, having their outer sides beveled, as shown, and secured to the said beams a, substantially as specified.

2. The swing-carriage consisting of the parts 6 e, having their side walls, It, provided with the recesses Z Z, and their edge walls with the recesses, the longitudinal shouldered bars F, cleats, and bolts for connecting the same, substantially as specified.

3. The swing described, consisting of the vertically-inclined beams a, the horizontal cross-beam B, the cross-arms C 0, having their outer longitudinal sides inclined, the parallel suspended swing-bars D, pivoted at the outer ends of the arms 0, and at the lower ends to the carriage, and the carriage formed of the sections 6 6, having the elastic seats and backs, substantially as specified.
