ISAAC WI HEYSINGER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
GAS-BURNER.
FJPECIPICATIOIV forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,765, dated November 11, 1884. Application filed September 25, 1883. (No model.)
T 0 aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC W. HnYsrNenR, of Philadelphia, in the county ofPhiladelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Gas-Burners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this specification, in whieh- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a gas burner illustrating my invention. Fig. 2
shows the same attached to a gas-bracket, an ornamental cup of the ordinary form beinginterposed between the burner and the bracket; and Fig. 3 shows a burner in which the detaching arm or lever is made separate from the body of the burner to which it is attached by a screw.
The lettering in tlledifferent figures .is uniform.
My invention relates to the construction of a gas-burner of any of the types or forms in use, and especially a straight or conical burner with a tip adapted to produce a flat flame, in which the body of the burner is provided,-
ally-projecting arm upon one or more sides thereof, whereby the burner may be attached or detached by the hand by using the said arm as a lever without the use of pipetongs, pliers, or wrenches.
Referring to the drawings, a is a gas-burner having an ordinary lava or other tip. (Shown at F.) Around the lowerportion of the body of the burner, outside the screw thereof, I fold a strip of metal, b, having the meeting edges thrown up to form an arm or lever, which extends outward from the axis of the burner, so as to be readily taken hold of by the hand, by which the burner may be screwed on or off the bracket to which it is attached. In this laterally-projecting arm I make a transverse opening or slot,so as to permitthe introduction of the end of a nail, skewer, button -hook, or other like instrument, as shown in Fig. 1, where the nail is passed through the hole and lies with its forward end against the side of the burner, so as to assist the hand, if necessary, in detaching or screwing up the burner. The ring of metal above described is soldered or otherwise firmly attached to the body of the burner, and instead.
of folding this ring of metal around the burner-tube, as shown in Fig. 1, I sometimes cast the same onto the burner solid, andI also sometimes dispense with the hole and carry the arm B out laterally for a considerable distancc, so as to give increased leverage. I also sometimes, as shown in Fig. 3, form the lever-bearing part in a separate piece, either :ast or otherwise, and attach the upper part of the body of a burner or an entire burner thereto. As shown in Fig. 2, the shape of the projection B is conformed to the interior of the cup or flange ordinarily applied to burners for ornament or as a waste-cup, and is for the most part concealed therein, although this is not essential.
I make these burners of brass, iron, or any other metal, and attach the lever by screws, rivets, sockets, solder, or by casting it solid with theburner, and use either one or more, as I prefer, of these laterally-projecting arms or levers.
I am aware that screw-threaded nuts having lateral thumb-extensions have been known heretofore, and I do not claim the same, as my invention relates to a gasburner, substantially as shown, provided with a lateral extension whereby the same may be operated by hand, as herein shown and claimed.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
'1. A gas-burner having a body, A, and tip F, and provided with a laterally-projecting lever for detaching the same, ing a slot or opening therein to admit the insertion of an operating-lever to assist in rotating the said burner, substantially as described.
2. As an article of manufacture, a gas-burnor provided with a screw-threaded socket, and a lateral-projecting lever permanently attached thereto, substantially as described.
3. A gas-burner, A, having a flame-tip, F, and a screw-threaded socket provided with an external band, I), permanently attached there to, and having a lateral extension, B, substantially as and for the purposes described.
ISAAC IV. HEYSINGER. Witnesses I. ODONNELL, AUGUSTINE QUIN.
