TELLURIC GLOBE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,636, dated November 4, 1884.

To all whom it may concern;-
Be it known that I, R. HENRY FERGUSON, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Telluric Globes, of which improvement the following is a specification.
My improvement consists in a globe having one hemisphere dark and opaque and the other hemisphere luminous; and the improvement comprises means for supporting and imparting I rotary motion to the globe.
I11 the accompanying drawing the figure represents a side View of an instrument embodying my improvement.
In the figure, Adesignates a globe or sphere, which may'be made of any suitable material, hollow orsolid, and of one or more pieces, I prefer to make it of papier-rnach, wood, or metal. One-half of its surface will be opaque and dark, while the other half is to be light or luminous. The dark part may be produced by the use of black paint and the light or luminous part byluminous paint or other luminous material. In this manner these effects may be produced at the least expense; but it is possible to make the light or luminous part of translucent glass or like materialnotably of whatis known as opal glassandproduce theluminositybyalampiusidethcglobe. The globe is mounted on a shaftor arbor, B, whose axis is coincident with the line of the demarkation of the dark and the light or luminous cent to a full circle, where the globe has luminous and dark-colored portions, and it is designed for use at night or in a dark room.
The shaft or arbor B is'journaled in an areshaped. support, 0, which is graduated radially to indicate diiferent angles of inclination, and is susceptible of movement longitudinally in a supporting-post, D, to adjust theglobe axially into different positions. The shaft B is shown as provided with a hand-crank for use in rotating it. The post D is provided with a screw, (1, whereby the arc-shaped support 0 may be clamped within its recess in the post after its adjustment to any position. The post D is journaled in a stand, E. \Vithin this stand is a train of wheels driven by a spring, and serving to impart rotary motion to the post. \Vhen the post D is rotated by this train of wheels, the globe will be revolved so that the orbital motion of the moon will be illustrated.
By my improvement I provide an instrument by which an understanding of the causes for the various phases of the moon and other bodies in the universe may be imparted to almost any person.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A tellurio globe having one hemisphere of its surface dark and opaque and the other hemisphere luminous, and mechanism, substantially as described, for imparting rotaiy motion to such gl0be,,substantially as specifled.
2. A globe for illustrating the phases of the moon and other bodies having one half its surface dark and the other half covered with luminous paint orother luminous material, substantially as specified.

I It is hereby certified that in Letters Patent No. 307,636, granted November 4, 1884, upon the application of It. Henry Ferguson, of Protidenoe, Ithode Island, for an improvement in Telluric Globes, errors appear in the printed specification requiring correction, as follows: In line 38, the comma after the Word circle should be emitted and a period read therein, and the following Word Where commenced with a capital W. In line 39, the Word and between the Words portions and it should be omitted. The specification should be read with these corrections therein to make the Letters Patent conform to the record of the case in the Patent Office.
