8 Claims. (Cl. 214-461) This invention relates to building structures and more particularly to building structures affording accommodations to persons traveling by automobile and requiring automobile parking or storage facilities therefor.
An object of this invention is to provide a new and improved building structure atfording accommodations to transients and providing automobile parking or storage areas adjacent each room.
Another object is to provide a building structure providing a plurality of rooms for the accommodation of transients wherein each room is provided with an adjacent parking space for an automobile.
Still another object is to provide a multi-story building structure each of whose stories or floors is provided with a plurality of rooms each of which has a parking space or stall adjacent thereto.
A further object is to provide a multi-story motel having a plurality of rooms on each floor with a parking space adjacent each room and having elevator means for transporting automobiles between the stalls and the ground.
A still further object is to provide a multi story motel having a plurality of rooms on each story or floor and having elevator means for transporting automobiles between automobile parking stalls provided adjacent each room wherein each room has access openings to its adjacent parking area and to a walkway.
Another object of the invention is to provide a multistory motel having a plurality of rooms on each story or floor and having elevator means for transporting automobiles between automobile parking stalls provided adjacent each room wherein each room is provided with access openings to its adjacent parking area and to a walkway, the motel having stairways and a passenger elevator for atfording access from the walkway of each story to the ground level.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a multi-story motel having a plurality of rooms provided with adjacent parking stalls disposed about a central well extending vertically through the building and having elevator means movable in the well for moving automobiles between the ground level of the building and any selected parking stall of any story of the building.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a motel which provides a maximum number of rooms and adjacent parking spaces therefor for a given area of ground.
Additional objects and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent from the reading of the following description of a device constructed in accordance with the invention, and reference to the accompanying drawings thereof, wherein:

Referring now to the drawings, the multi-story motel 16 embodying the invention includes a base or foundation 12 on which are erected the vertical outer side walls 13 atent amass Patented Jan. 29, 1953 and 14, and the outer end walls 15 and 16. A plurality of horizontal vertically spaced floors 18 are connected to the walls and divide the building into a plurality of stories 19 in a ground story or floor 20. The innerside walls 22 and 23 and inner end walls 24 and 25 form an elevator well or shaft which extends the height of the building and opens to a central elevator machinery housing 27a which extends across the elevator well or shaft 27 and houses the elevator raising and moving devices and motors as will be explained below.
The ground floor or story 20 may be divided on opposite sides of the loading ramps 30 and 31 into a plurality of shops, restaurants or the like, each of which may be suitablypartitioned from the other by partition walls and which may have doors 35 for access to the walkways 36 which surround the building. The loading ramps 30 are separated by a pair of transverse islands 38 each of which may have a suitable oilice or booth 39 which may be'o'ccupied by the attendants who operate the elevators 49 for moving the automobiles of the occupants of the roomsof the upper stories to the parking spaces or stalls adjacent such rooms. The booths 39 may also of course house the controls for the elevators.
Each of the upper stories is divided by suitable transverse partition walls 43, 44 and 45 which extend be I tween inner and outer walls, into rooms A and B provided with doors 47 and 43, respectively, which open to the automobile parking spaces or stalls D and E,
respectively. The stalls D and B may be separated by any suitable partitions 49. Partition walls 54 51' and 52, similarly extend between the outer and inner walls 14; and 22 to form rooms F and G having doors 53 and 54 which open to their respectively adjoining automobile parking spacesor stalls L and K. The stalls L and K may be'separat'ed if desired by any suitable partitions 68. The inner side walls 22 and 23 have openings closed by the gates 6b and 61, respectively, which open into the elevator well 27 from thestalls L and K and A and B. The gates 6t and 61 are movable to an open overhead position in each stall when an elevator as is aligned therewithto permit the automobile to be driven oil or onto the elevator, into or out of the stalls.
Each of the rooms may be provided with a suitable bathroom 66 and closet 67 formed by suitable partition walls and with an outer door 68 which opens to the walkway 7b. The walkway extends about the full perimeter of each floor and communicates with the stairwells 82 and 85 which permit the occupants of the rooms to move between the ground floor and their rooms. A passenger elevator 36 is movable in a suitable vertical well adjacent'the end wall 16. The elevator 86 may of course transport the passangers between the various floors of the building in the usual manner.
Each floor may also be provided with a utility room 38 for the storage of supplies and the like.
It will now be seen that the multi-story motel provides a plurality of floors each having a plurality of rooms arranged about an elevator well and each having an automobile still adjacent thereto so that the occupant of the room may have his automobile parked next to the room which he occupies and so that he may have access to his parked automobile from his room to facilitate load-' ing and unloading of the luggage.
It will be seen that the elevator 40 permits an automobile to be stored in the stall adjacent to the room ocsprees 3 other establishments which may provide services for the transients occupying the rooms of the building.
It will further be seen that the elevators ll) are arranged for both vertical and lateral movement in a central well of the building so that the elevators may load and un- 7 load automobiles into the stalls on opposite ends of the elevators.
It will further be seen that the doors 18 provide covered w kways for the occupan-ts'oi the rooms since each floor overhangs the other to shelter it from the elements.
It will further be seen that the car stalls are provided with gates as and 61 which close the stalls when the elevator is not in aligned position with the stalls so that there is no danger of persons falling from the stalls into the elevator Well. I
The elevator operating mechanism may be of the type disclosed in'the patent to Bowser. 2,663,436, issued December 22, 1953. Briefly, the elevator mechanism includes a framework E33 suspended from 'a movable crane 134 which is adapted to traverse the length of the well of the building on the support rails 135 onwhich the wheels 135a of the crane 13d ride. The bottom of the elevator framework carries two pairs of guide wheels 136 which bear against the opposite sides of a guide rail 137 located at the bottom of the well and coincident with the center line thereof. The guide wheels and the guide rail assist to prevent transverse movement of the framework when automobiles are driven between the ramps 36 and 31 and the elevator car 133. The elevator car is guided within the opposing T-sections of the framework 133 and are vertically movably by the hoist cables 133a. One end of each cable 138:: is secured (to end wall 16 of the building. The cables 138a pass over a multi-grooved sheave 141 and descend to pass under and support a similar sheave 142 pivotally carried by a pair of transverse I-beams'1 i3 forming the top of the elevator car. The sheave 142 reverses the direction of the cables which then ascend and pass over another sheave 144*. The cables then proceed to the opposite The drive sheave 147 is rotated by a reversible motor 151, the entire mechanism being carried by a stationary l-beam framework 152 located adjacent the intersection of the roof of the housing 27 and the adjacent end wall 15.
Upon rotation in one direction of the drive sheave 14-7 the existing length of the cables 13% between the end Walls of the building is shortened which automatically lift the sheave 142 and raises the elevator car within the elevator guide frame. The load of the driving motor in raising the elevator car is lightened by means of the counter balance 48 which simultaneously descends along the wall of the building with the ascent of the elevator car. Reverse movement of the motor 151 acts to pay out the cables 138:: between the end walls of the building thereby permitting the elevator car 38 to descend within the guide frame.
The elevator guide frame 133 is movably carried by a horizontal crane structure consisting of a rectangular arrangement of I-beams. The short length I-beams 153 run parallel to the inner walls 22 and 23 of the building and determine the desired width of the elevator guide frame. The l-beams 153 are connected at their ends by means of transverse .l-beams 154-. Suitable intermediate l-beams may be connected to the I-beams 15% which extend perpendicularly therebetwcen to form a support for the sheaves 141 and 144 aiid also for the driving mechanism necessary to produce lateral movement of the crane. This driving mechanism consists of a reversible motor 158 mounted on transverse channel brackets 159. To the end of the drive shaft 16b of the motor is connected to worm 161 which engages a worm wheel 162 keyed to a transverse shaft 163 upon which is in turn keyed the sheave ldl. Actuation of the motor 158 in one direction will rotate the sheave 141 in a counter-clockwise direction and due to traction resulting from the weight of the elevator car the sheave will progress to the right as viewed in FIGURE 4 thereby moving the crane and the entire elevator framework in that direction. Reverse movement of the motor 58 will produce the opposite result and cause the elevator assembly to move to the left. The simultaneous actuation of motors i151 and 158 will cause both vertical movement of the elevator car 138 within the guide frame and lateral movement of the crane assembly 134 and the suspended guide frame 133. This simultaneous movement allows the automobile conveyed by the elevator car to assume diagonal motion which is the resulting component of the above mentioned vertical and horizontal movement. This feature obviously allows the elevator car to progress from one point or stall location to another in the building by means of the shortest distance between those two points and thereby save considerable time in the parking and delivery of the automobile.
The elevator car which is carried by the suspended guide frame comprises a reinforced platform section 163 and vertical side panels extending upwardly from the.
platform section as is fully explained in the patent to Bowser. The side panels are supported by end posts 166 located at each of the four corners of the lower platform section 163 and each of which have grooved runways on the inner surface into which extend edge por-l located on an instrument panel within the elevator car.
The drive spindle of the motor 16? actuates the housed gear mechanism litl. Keyed to the shaft 171 are juxtaposed cable drums 172 and 173 or other means of drive. Upon each of these drums is wound a length of cable or The cable 174 which is wound on the drum 72 travels horizontally from the drum to actuate a mechanism generally designated as 175 which raises a selected gate 163 and simultaneously raises the adjacent gate 61 or 6t) of a stall when the elevator car is aligned therewith.
The gates 69 and 61 are guided into movement to an overhead open position by oppositely disposed channel members 193 which have arcuate portions 194 as is fully explained in the patent to Bowser.
The actuation of the motor 159 which simultaneously automobile between the platform of the elevator car and the stall having the selected gate, is controlled by suitable controls such as those disclosed in the patent to Bowser and may be operated from within the elevator car. The motors 151 and 158 may be controlled by the control mechanisms disclosed in the patent to Bowser and may be located either in the booths 39 or in the elevator car as maybe desired. a
It will thus be seen that the elevator mechanism for transporting automobiles between the stalls of the various floors and the ground floor provides for the simultaneous lifting and lowering of the stall gate and the car gate so that the gate of each stall is moved to its lowered position before the elevaton can movefrom alignment therewith dueto the controls provided by Bowser. If desired, the connols and the elevator gate may be of the type disclosed in the patent to Bowser, 2,863,529, for simultaneously lifting and closing the car gates and the stall gates.

It will be apparent of course that the occupants of the automobile may be transported between the ground floor and their rooms by means of the elevator car whenever their automobile must be moved therebetween and, in the event that they do not wish to move their automobile, they may descend by means of the Stairways 83 or by the passenger elevator 86. i
It will also be seen that a new and improved multistoried motel has been illustrated and described which has a plurality of juxtaposed floors of each of which is divided by suitable partition means into a plurality of rooms, each room has an adjacent automobile stall to which access may be had directly from the room by means of the doors 48 or 53 as the case may be.
It will further be seen that the rooms and stalls are arranged about an elevator well in which is movable elevator 40 for transporting cars between the ramps of the ground floor from which the automobile may be driven and the elevator car platform 166, and the automobile stalls whereby the motel provides a storage space for the automobiles of the occupants of the rooms.
It will further be seen that each of the rooms has access outwardly to a walkway by means of which the occupants of the room may move to the stairways or to a passenger elevator for movement between the various floors and the ground floor.
It will further be seen that the motel illustrated and described provides a maximum utilization of the available ground area and at the same time provides the occupants with the convenience of having their automobiles stored adjacent to their rooms whereby loading and unloading of the car is facilitated.
The foregoing description of the invention is explanatory only, and changes in the details of the construction illustrated may be made by those skilled in the art, Within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
l. A building including: a plurality of floors, said building having an elongate elevator well, some of said floors having a plurality of rooms and a plurality of automobile stalls arranged about the Well, said stalls being located in pairs in side by side relation between and spacing pairs of the rooms, the stalls of each pair of the stalls being separated by a partition means, each of said rooms being disposed adjacent an automobile stall and having a door opening to said adjacent stalls; and elevator means disposed in said well and movable longitudinally and vertically in said well for transporting automobiles between said stalls and the ground, each of said stalls being accessible only through the door of its adjacent room and said well.
2. A building including: a plurality of floors, said building having an elongate elevator well, some of said floors having a plurality of rooms and a plurality of automobile stalls arranged about the well, said stalls being located in pairs in side by side relation between and spacing pairs of the rooms, the stalls of each pair of the stalls being separated by a partition means, each of said rooms being disposed adjacent an automobile stall and having a door opening to said adjacent automobile stalls; and elevator means disposed in said well for transporting automobiles between said stalls and the ground, said elevator being movable longitudinally and vertically in said well, each of said stalls being accessible only through the door of its adjacent room and the well.

A building including: a plurality of floors, said building having an elongate elevator well, some of said floors having a plurality of rooms and a plurality of automobile stalls arranged about the well,.said stalls being located in pairs in side by side relation between and spacing pairs of the rooms, the stalls of each pair of the, stalls'being separated by a partition means, each of said roomsbeing disposed adjacent an automobile stall and having a door opening to said adjacent automobile stalls, and elevator means disposed in said Well for transport-. lug automobiles between said stalls and the ground, each of-said stalls being accessible only through the door of its adjacent room and said well, each of said floors provided Withrooms and stalls also having a walkway, said rooms haying doors opening on said; walkway, said buildinghaving means for providing access between said walkways and they ground.

A building including: a plurality of floors, said building having an elongate elevator well, some of said floors having a plurality of rooms and a plurality of automobile stalls arranged about the well, said stalls being located in pairs in side by side relation between and spacing pairs of the rooms, the stalls of each pair of stalls being separated by a partition means, each of said rooms being disposed adjacent an automobile stall and having a door opening to said adjacent automobile stalls; and elevator means disposed in said well and movable longitudinally and vertically in said well for transporting automobiles between said stalls and the ground, each of said stalls being accessible only through the door of its adjacent room and said well, each of said floors provided with rooms and stalls also having a walkway, said rooms having doors opening on said walkway, said building having means for providing access between said walkways and the ground.
5. A building including: a plurality of floors, said building having an elongate elevator well, some of said floors having a plurality of rooms and a plurality of automobile stalls arranged about the well, said stalls being located in pairs in side by side relation between and spacing pairs of the rooms, the stalls of each pair of the stalls being separated by a partition means, each of said rooms being disposed adjacent an automobile stall and having a door opening to said adjacent automobile stalls; and elevator means disposed in said well and movable longitudinally and vertically in the well for transporting automobiles between said stalls and the ground, each of said stalls being accessible only through the door of its adjacent room and said well, each of said floors provided with rooms and stalls also having a walkway, said rooms having doors opening on said walkway, said building havhig means for providing access between said Walkways and the ground, one of said floors having passage means at a preselected position communicating with the well and the exterior of the building permitting movement of automobiles between said elevator means and the exterior of the building at said preselected position.
6. A building including: a plurality of floors, said building having a central elongate elevator well, some of said floors having a plurality of rooms and a plurality of automobile stalls arranged about the well, said stalls being located in pairs in side by side relation between and spacing pairs of the rooms, the stalls of each pair of the stalls being separated by a partition means, each of said rooms being disposed adjacent an automobile stall and having a door opening to said adjacent automobile stalls; and elevator means disposed in said well and movable longitudinally and vertically in the well for transporting automobiles between said stalls and the ground, each of said stalls being accessible only through the door of its adjacent room and said well, each of said floors provided with rooms and stalls also having a walkwa said rooms having doors opening on said walkway, said building having means for providing access between said walkways and the ground, each of said goors overhanging the walkway of its immediately lower 7. A building including: a plurality of floors, said building having an elongate elevator well, some of said floors having a plurality of rooms and a plurality of automobile stalls arranged about the Well, each of'said rooms being disposed adjacent a single automobile stall and having a door opening to said adjacent automobile stall, said automobile stalls and rooms being disposed along OPOSit longitudinal sides of said elongate elevator well whereby the stalls are accessible to said elevator well; and elevator means disposed in said well and movable longitudinally and vertically in said well for transporting automobiles between said stalls and the ground, each of said stalls being accessible only through the door of its adjacent room and said well, each of said floors also having a walkway, said rooms having doors opening on said Walkway, said building having means for providing access between said walkways and the ground.

Claims (1)

1. A BUILDING INCLUDING: A PLURALITY OF FLOORS, SAID BUILDING HAVING AN ELONGATE ELEVATOR WELL, SOME OF SAID FLOORS HAVING A PLURALITY OF ROOMS AND A PLURALITY OF AUTOMOBILE STALLS ARRANGED ABOUT THE WELL, SAID STALLS BEING LOCATED IN PAIRS IN SIDE BY SIDE RELATION BETWEEN AND SPACING PAIRS OF THE ROOMS, THE STALLS OF EACH PAIR OF THE STALLS BEING SEPARATED BY A PARTITION MEANS, EACH OF SAID ROOMS BEING DISPOSED ADJACENT AN AUTOMOBILE STALL AND HAVING A DOOR OPENING TO SAID ADJACENT STALLS; AND ELEVATOR MEANS DISPOSED IN SAID WELL AND MOVABLE LONGITUDINALLY AND VERTICALLY IN SAID WELL FOR TRANSPORTING AUTOMOBILES BETWEEN SAID STALLS AND THE GROUND, EACH OF
