RYLAND RUSSELL ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 15, 1963 3,073,056 PAPER HOLDER Ryland Russell, 5628 Pembroke Lane, Shawnee Mission, Kans. Filed Apr. 24, 1961, Ser. No. 104,890 1 Claim. (Cl. 45-61) This invention relates to an improvment in a self supportable paper holder, for the purpose of reading, relatively tall and slender, and has horizontal corrugations on the face thereof to corrugate a relatively wide paper, such as a newspaper including magazines, for self supporting stiffness beyond each side of the paper holder.
Many a person will buy a newspaper or magazine and enter a restaurant or cafe for a meal or lunch. The eating place is often crowded, and the seating space for each individual is usually narrow especially at the lunch counters. There is not suflicient space to open the paper or magazine and lay it down on the table or counter. The person needs the freedom of both hands to proportion the food he conveys to his mouth. Invalids often have need of a paper holder. A person doing some types of work can use a paper holder when in the performance of the work with his hands. Furthermore it is comfortable to use a paper holder to support a paper in a readable position while a person is resting or reclining in a chair.
The basic improvement in my invention is to provide a self supporting relatively tall and slender piece of material, with corrugations on the face thereof, to shape and transfer the corrugations to a newspaper for the entire width thereof to stiffen the newspaper for the support thereof beyond each side of the tall and slender member. The paper holder is made relatively narrow with all parts thereof permanently assembled in fixed positions for quick placement or storage on one portion of a table or counter when not in use. The holder does not require any folding or readjustment of the parts thereof.
Another object of my invention is to secure a transparent forward member to the base portion of the tall slender member and be extended upwardly and form a holder to slidably receive therebetween and horizontally corrugate the full width of a newspaper having a much greater width than the width of the holder. All paper facing the reader may be read including the portion between the transparent member and the tall slender memher.
This specification will be more fully understood with reference to the accompanying drawing, and the claims appended.
In the drawing:
FIGURE 1 is a view illustrating a side elevation of my improved paper holder.
FIGURE 2 is a view illustrating a front elevation of FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 3 is a view illustrating a side elevation of my improved paper holder with a newspaper therein and corrugated thereby.
FIGURE 4 is a view illustrating a front elevation of FIGURE 3.
The paper holder has a tall slender piece of material 11 with a self supportable base 12 formed on the lower end thereof. The forward or front face 13 of the tall slender piece of material 11 is curved and shaped with horizontal corrugations 14.
The one face 13 is generally inclined upwardly and rearwardly from the supportable base 12 forming an alternate furrow and ridge corrugation to support and shape a newspaper 15 thereon to impress and transfer the horizontal corrugation shapes 14 to the newspaper for stiffening and supporting the entire width thereof.
A stiff transparent sheet 16 may be made of plastic material and covers the major front face 13 of the tall slender piece of material 11. The lower portion of the stifi transparent sheet 16 is secured to the supportable base portion 17 preferably with screws 18.
The stiff transparent sheet 16 is corrugated horizontally and curved rearwardly and upwardly for a portion 19 to contact a mid-portion of the forward face 13 of the tall slender piece of material 11 for holding a newspaper against the face 13.
The upper portion 20 of the stiff transparent sheet 16 is curved forwardly to form a lip to guide a newspaper 15 against the face 13 of the tall slender piece of material 11.
It is obvious that the first page of this specification sets forth the object, purpose and advantages of this invention and reference thereto is equivalent to the same as being repeated at this end of the specification.
I claim:
A paper holder which is designed primarily for holding newspapers at a counter or table for reading purposes by persons usually crowded closely together while being served and eating food, the paper holder comprising in combination:
(a) apost,
(b) said post having a skew cut across the lower end thereof to act as a base and inherently support said post in an inclined upwardly and rearwardly position,
(0) said post having a forward face normally inclined upwardly and rearwardly in an S shape curve from the lower portion thereof to the top portion thereof,
(d) said post with the mentioned 8 shape curve being sufiicient to corrugate sheets of paper when placed thereon for cantilever support thereof beyond each side of the mentioned face of said post,
' (e) said post with the mentioned forward 8 curved face slenderizing said post from the base portion thereof to the top portion thereof to give the inherent upright support of the post on the mentioned skew cut base end thereof,
(f) and a clip member secured to said post to hold the mentioned sheets of paper on the mentioned face of said post.
