Description
Dec. 25, 1962 w. M. M LEOD REPLACEMENT PLOW SHARE ADAPTER Filed May 16, 1960 MWW'W'IH Walter M, McLeod 1 N VE N TOR.
3,070,177 REPLACEMENT PLOW @HARE ADAPTER Waiter M. McLeod, Milton, N. Dali. Fiied May 16, 1960, Ser. No. 29,499 3 Claims. (Cl. 172-745) This invention relates generaliy to new and useful improvements in plows and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, novel means whereby so-called throw-away replacement shares now in widespread use may be expeditiously installed on old and other plows which are not constructed to accommodate such shares.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide an adapter of the aforementioned character which will permit the installation and use of throwaway shares without the necessity of making material structural alterations in the plow.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a plow share adapter of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, compact, of light weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
FIGURE 1 is a view in side elevation showing a plow equipped with an adapter constructed in accordance with the present invention;
FIGURE 2 is a side elevational view, showing the plow ready to receive the adapter; and
FIGURE 3 is a perspective view of the adapter per se.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises an elongated, generally flat plate or bar 4 of suitable metal. The bar 4 has formed therein at longitudinally spaced points a plurality of openings or holes 5 whereby a throw-away replacement share may be bolted thereon.
A portion of a plow is designated generally by the reterence character 6. The plow 6 includes a standard share 7 which is bolted in the usual manner at 8 to the frog of said plow. The dull or worn lower portion of the sehare 7 has been removed to provide a straight lower edge 9.
Formed integrally with the rear portion of the bar 4 is a plurality of upstanding ears or lugs 10. This portion of the bar 4 underlies the share 7 and is welded thereon as indicated at 11. The bar 4 further comprises an inclined, slightly arced forward end 12 which abuts atent the notched lower portion of the landside 1.3 of the plow 6 and is welded thereto as at 1 3.
It is thought that the invention will be readily understood from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, the share 7 of the plow 6 is prepared in the manner shown in FIGURE 2 of the drawing. The bar 4 is then applied to the plow and welded at 11 and 14. The replacement share is then bolted on the bar 4 in an 0bvious manner, the holes 5 accommodating the bolts. The upper front portion of the bar t is cut away or recessed at 15 to accommodate the frog of the plow.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is calirned as new is as follows:
1. In combination, a plow comprising a share, and an adapter secured on said share for removably mounting thereon a renewable replacement blade, said adapter comprising a bar substantially paralleling the share and said bar including upstanding lugs afiixed to the inner side of the share for mounting the bar thereon.
2. In combination, a plow including a share and a landside, and an adapter secured on said share and said landside for removably mounting thereon a renewable replacement blade, said adapter comprising a metallic bar substantially paralleling the share and said bar having its forward end afi'lxed to the landside, said bar including fiat, integral upstanding lugs afiixed to the inner side of the share in face-abutting engagement therewith for mounting said bar thereon, said bar having longitudinally spaced bolt-receiving holes therein for securing a replacement blade thereon.
3. A method of rebuilding a plow having a worn share and a landside, said method comprising the steps of removing the worn portion of the share, allixing an adapter bar to the remaining portion of the share in place of the removed portion, afiixing the forward end of the adapter bar to the landside, and then mounting a replacement share on said adapter bar.
