REUBEN R. FRAZIEIQ OF JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA.
FRUIT CLIPPER AND SHEARS.
SPECIFICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 306,682, dated October 14, 1884.
I Application filed February 2, 1884. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, REUBEN R. FRAZIER, of Jacksonville, Duval county, Florida, have invented a new and Improved Fruit Clipper or Shears, of whichthe following is a full, clear,
and exact description.
The object of myinvention is to provide a new and improved clipper or shears for clipping or cutting fruit from trees, which clipper is simple in construction, fits well in the hand, and cuts or clips very readily.
The invention consists of the combination of parts and their construction, substantially as set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming partof this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal elevation of my improved fruit-clipper, showing the manner in which it is held for use. Fig. 2 is an inside end elevation of the clipper, and Fig. 3 is an end View of a modified construction of the clipper.
Two metal plates. A, curved to fi-t against the inner surface of the first finger when bent, are united at the outer ends by a rivet, B, and at the inner ends by a pivot, O, on which pivot the inner end of a curved blade, D, is pivoted between the inner ends of the plates A. The plates A are provided on the outer edges with outwardly and upwardly bent lugs E, forming a groove or socket for the first finger, and the blade D is provided on its outer edge with outwardly and upwardly bent lugs F, projecting alternately in opposite directions andform ing a groove or socket for the thumb. The inner edge of the blade D is provided with a cutting-edge. Aspring-wire, G, is fastened to the rivet B, and is bent to conform about with the outer edges of the plates A and blade D, and that end of the spring G opposite the one fastened to the rivet B is fastened to or held on one of the lugs F of the blade D, which 5 spring swings the blade from the plates A, be-
tween which the blade passes when it is pressed I ers, shrubs, 85c.
' D can be used.
toward the said plates. A spring of any other suitable construction or arrangement can be provided in place of the spring shown. The clipper is held between the first finger and thumb in the manner shown, and the fruit is grasped by the remaining fingers of the hand, and then the thumb and the first finger are moved toward each other and the blade cuts the stem of the fruit. As soon as the fingers are separated the spring opens the clipper. The clipper can also be used for cutting flow- In place of the two plates A, a single blade constructed like the blade.
If desired, the scissors or clipper can be made with a blade, D, and a single plate, A, the said blade and plate being pivoted to each other in the manner described. The blade D is constructed in. the manner shown and described; but the plate A is. provided at its upper edge with a loop, M, for receiving the end of the first finger.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a fruit clipper or shears, the combination, with the plates A, having lugs E and united by a rivet, B. of the blade D, pivoted at one end and between the inner ends of the plates A, and provided with lugs F, and of the spring G, having one end secured to the rivet B and the other end to one of the lugs of the blade D, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a fruit clipper or shears, thetwo edgewise-disposed plates, A D, pivotally connected and acted upon by a spring, one plate serving as a blade, and each having lugs projecting from each side, the lugs E of one being bent or curved upward and the lugs F of the other being bent or curved downward, as shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
REUBEN R. FRAZIER.
