PHOTOGRAPHIG PRINTING FRAME.
No. 306,636. PatentedOot. 14, 18841.
I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. NEEDHAM, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO E. P. NEEDHAM & SON, OF SAME PLACE.
PHOTOGRAPHlC-PRINTING FRAME.
$PECIFICATION forming part-of Letters Patent No. 306,636, dated Qctober 14, 1884.
' Application filed April 14, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Cnnnnns A. NEEDHAM, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Photographic- Printing Frames, of which the following is a specification.
My improvement relates to the printingframes used by photographers for clamping sensitized paper and a negative together for exposure to the rays of the sun. The backs of the printingframes are usually made in two sections, to facilitate examination of the prints during exposure without shifting them. The backs of the printing-frames are usually covered with canton-flannel or like material on the surface which comes in contact with the sensitized paper. At the meeting edges of the sections this material is liable to become loosened or detached, and when this happens a rib or ridge is formed, and the back is no longer useful while in that condition. This 1 is a source of constant annoyance.
The object of my improvement is to obviate the trouble which is incident to the use of the backs as ordinarily constructed. To this end the improvement consists in the combination, with a back of a printing-frame made of sections hinged together, of a covering applied to the same and turned over and secured to the meeting edges of the sect-ions. The action of the meeting edges during the operation of the sections of the back then tends to tighten and secure the covering material ,rather' than to loosen it.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a printing-frame embodying my improvement, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the back of the frame.
' Similar letters of reference designate correo sponding parts in both figures.
A designates the frame proper. The negative is inserted in this frame with the film side uppermost. 4 The sensitized paper is then laid upon the negative, and the back Bis then laid 4 5 upon the sensitized paper. The back B is made in sections hinged together at the meeting edges in any suitable manner. As shown, the sections are connected by hinges a at the upper side. On the under side, or, in other words, the side which. comes next the sensitized paper, the back is covered with canton-flannel or analogous materiahb. The meeting edges of the sections have this material turned over them, as shown at c c. The said material may be secured in place by glue or other adhesive material.
The back may be secured, when in place, by resilient crossbars or spring-strips O, pivotally connected at about the middle to the sections of the back, and adapted to be engaged at the ends with catches (Z on the frame A.
The exposure may be effected as usual.
What I claim as my invention, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the back of a printing-frame made of two. sections, and having ahinge-connection at one side, of a covering applied to each of said sections and turned over the meeting edges of said sections and secured thereto by glue or other adhesive ma terial, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
