VARIABLE GOLF CLUB HEAD I J INVENTOR.
/ E'.'. wgwzfm rates This invention relates to a golf club, and more particularly to a golf club in which the weight of the head is adjustable or variable as desired.
This invention is a divisional application of my copending application Serial No. 862,553, filed December 29, 1959.
The object of this invention is to provide a golf club which has a means for adjusting or varying the head weight and wherein the head weight can be readily and easily changed as for example on the golf course, and wherein according to the present invention the weight of the head is readily changed by removing or inserting a weight with a tapered surface.
Another object of the invention is to provide a golf club having a variable head weight and wherein the weight of the golf club head can be varied by removing or inserting weights or members which have tapering outer surfaces for engaging tapering openings in the heads of the clubs, and wherein these weights may be secured in place by suitable securing elements such as set screws.
A further object of the invention is to provide a variable golf club head which is extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent durin the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals are used to designate like parts throughout the same.
FIGURE 1 is a front elevational view of the head portion of a golf club with parts broken away showing weights with tapering outer surfaces positioned in an opening in the head of a golf club.
FIGURE 2 is a view similar to that shown in FIGURE 1, with the parts shown on an enlarged scale showing the head of the club with weights omitted.
FIGURE 3 is a rear elevational view of the head of a golf club showing a set screw threaded in the head for retaining weights therein.
FIGURE 4 is a plan view of the head of a golf club, with parts broken away showing a section on line 4-4 of FIGURE 3.
FIGURE 5 is a front elevational view of the head of a golf club, with parts broken away and in section, showing a further modification wherein weights with tapering outer surfaces are retained in a tapering opening in the head of a golf club, the tapering opening extending through a base plate retained by screws on the head of the club.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the golf club head illustrated in FIGURES 1 and 2 has weights 42 which have tapering outer surfaces positioned in a tapering open- 3,fi4,9@ Fatented Nov. 20, 1952 ing or recess 43 in a golf club head 44 and the weights are retained in position by a set screw 45 having a head 46 and threaded in an opening 47 extended into the face of the head of the club.
In the design illustrated in FIGURES 3 and 4 a cap screw 48 having a head 49 is threaded in an opening 50 with the head in a counter bore 51 and the cap screw provides means for securing weights 52 having tapering outer surfaces in a tapering opening or recess 53 in a head or shoulder 54 of a golf club. The head 49 of the cap screw is provided with a slot 55 by which the screw may be turned by a coin to facilitate removing or replacing wcights on the golf course.
In the design illustrated in FIGURE 5' a golf club head 56 is provided with a tapering opening or recess 57 in which weights 58 are provided and the weights are retained in the opening by a screw member 59 having a shoulder or head 65 and the head is positioned in a counter bore 61 of a sole plate 62 that is retained in a recess or cavity or indentation 63 by screws 64. The head of the screw 59 is provided with a screw driver slot 65 by which the screw may be removed and replaced on the golf course.
By this means the weight of a head of a golf club may be changed on the golf course by removing the screw and one or more of the Weights from a head or by removing the screw and replacing weights in the head. The weight of the head of a golf club may, therefore, be regulated to compensate for different conditions existing on the golf course or for the condition of the golfer.
Minor changes in shape, size and rearrangement of details coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to in actual practice, if desired.
What is claimed is:
In a golf club, a head provided with a tapered recess therein, a plurality of weights adapted to be positioned in said recess, and said weights having tapering outer surfaces, there being a threaded opening in said head and said opening communicating with said recess, one of said weights being of a size to conformably fit within the portion of said recess adjacent said opening with one face of said weight at the junction of said opening with said recess, and a set screw arranged in threaded engagement with said opening with one end thereof in abutting engagement with said one face of said one weight, the longitudinal axis of said set screw being arranged angularly with respect to the longitudinal axes of said weights.
