(Ci. 263-461) The present invention relates to operators for windows with swinging sashes and more particularly to operators wherein the lever portion can be swung either to the right or left to bring the window sash from a nearly closed position to a tightly closed position.
At the present it is common practice to provide swinging window sashes with an operator to open and close them which consists of a short bar hinged to a portion of the window sash away from that portion of the sash which is pivotally secured to the window frame and a lever pivotally connected to the other end of the bar which may slide through a guide whenever the lever is aligned with the bar. In order to provide the force necessary to break the seal of a tightly closed window, a projection is provided on the lever which engages a stationary member to provide a sliding lever arm action which multiplies the force of the person operating the lever to break the seal.
However, these operators have had two distinct disadvantages. The rst is that for particular applications either a right hand or a left hand operator must be ordered because the lever is made to swing only in one direction from its alignment position with the bar. The second disadvantage is that frequent use of the operator will cause noticeable wear between the guide and the portion of the lever which rests against the guide to form a sliding fulcrum for tightly closing a window sash. Thus a stationary fulcrum would eliminate this wear and prolong the useful life of the operator.
Therefore it is an object of my invention to provide a new and improved operator for windows with swinging sashes.
A further object of the present invention is to provide an operator having a lever which may be swung either to the right or the left to tightly close a window.
An additional object is to provide a stationary fulcrum for the lever of an operator whenever the lever is being utilized to bring the window sash from a near closed position to a tightly closed position or from the tightly closed position back to the nearly closed position.
Further objects and advantages will become apparent from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.

While this invention is susceptible of embodiments in many different forms, there is shown in 4the drawings and will herein be described in detail two embodiments of the invention with the understanding that the present disclosure is to be considered as an exempliiication of the principles of the invention and is not intended to limit the invention to the embodiments illustrated. The scope of the invention will be pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to FIGURES l through 4, a window sash 10 has a bracket 11 secured to its inner surface. A bar 12 is provided with slots 13 and 14 to receive a pair( of prongs 15 and 16 of the bracket 11 for the purpose of providing a hinged connection between the bar 12 and the window sash 10. A latch member 17 is rotatably secured to the bar 12 by a pivot 18. With the latch member 17 in the locked position shown in FIGURES 3 and 4, lip portions 19 and 2t) engage slots in. the prongs 15 and 16 respectively to provide a hinged connection between the sash 10 and the bar 12.
Referring now to FIGURES 5 and 6 in addition to FIGURES 1 through 4, an intermediate member 21, is slidably mounted on the bar 12 by a projection 22 struck downward from said member 21 and a pin 23 with a pin head 24 rigidly mounted to said member 21. The projection 22 has shoulder portions thereon to space the outward end of said member 21 from said bar 12 and a tongue portion slidably engaging a slot 25 in the bar 12 to prevent lateral movement between said outward end of the member 21 and the bar 12. The pin 23 is in slidable engagement in a slot 26- in the bar 12 to prevent lateral movement between the inward end ofthe member 21 and the bar 12. The pin head 24 maintains the member 21 in spaced relationship to the bar 12, A ange 27 is bent upward from the outward end of the member 21. A pivot 28 provides a rotatable connection between the bar 12 and an operating lever 30. An extension lever 31 is slidably connected to the lever 30 by slidable rivets disposed in a slot 32 of lever 30 and in a similar slot (not shown) in the lever extension 31. A handle 33 is formed at the end of the extension lever 31.
A cam slot 34 in the bar 1.2 receives a projection 35 which is rigidly aixed to the lever 30; When the lever 30 is aligned with the bar 12 and the member 21, the combination may be slid through a guide 40 to move the window sash from a fully open position to a nearly closed position. The window sash is shown in the nearly closed position in FIGURE l, and FIGURE 3.- FIGURE 2 shows the window sash 10 in an intermediate open position. The guide 40 consists of a top housing member 41, a bottom housing member 42 and a plastic lining member 43 which is held in position by the housing members 41 and 42 and provides a smooth surface upon which the lever 30 and the bar `1,2 slide. When the remainder of the window is covered by a screen, a flexible metallic member 44 is mounted on the top housing member `41 to prevent insects from entering the window through 4the guide 40.

The window sash 1t)` may be positioned at any degree of opening by the manipulation of the handle 33 of the lever extension 31 when the lever 30l is aligned with thel bar 12 and member 21. To close the window sash 10 the handle 33 is manipulated by drawing it inward from the window sash until the window sash is in the nearly closed position. This action brings the flange 28 into engagement with the guide 40, thereby stopping the. inward movement `of the sash 10. The pivot 28 mounted on member 21 provides a stationary fulcrum for the lever 30 as it is swung to either a clockwise or a counterclockwise.A position. As they lever 30y is swungin a counterclockwise direction as viewed from the bottom, one side of they projection 35 will contact a portion of the inward side of slot 34 as shown in FIGURE 3. y As the counterclockwise swing is continuedl the action of lever. 30 through projection 3S places force on the bar 12 to draw the sash 10 to the tightly closed position as shown in FIG- URE 4. A clockwise swing of lever 30 brings the other side of the projection 35 inv contact with another portion of the inward side of slot 34 to force said sash into the tightly closed position in the same manner as the counterclockwise swing.
As the lever 3) is swung from either the clockwise or theV counterclockwise position to the aligned position the projection will engage the outward side of the slot 34 to apply force against the sashy 16 through the bar 12. Thusthe sash is returned from the tightly closed position to'` the nearly closed position with a mechanical advantagev being provided by the lever 30 to overcome the tendency of the window sash 10 to stick in the tightly closed position. During the swing to the aligned position the member 21 with the pivot 28 mounted thereon is held stationary by the flange 27 bearing on the guide 40u With the lever in the aligned position, compression force is transmitted from the lever 30 through the projection 35 to the bar 12 to open thel sash 10i. However the tension force to bring the sash 10 to a nearly closed position is transmitted from the lever through the pivot 28,*the member 21 and pin 23 to the bar 12. As an alternative to utilizing pin 23 as a component in the chain ofcomponents for transmitting the tension force, the
' projection 22 or a combination of both pin 23 and the projection 22 may bel utilized between the member 21 andthe bar 12,
I claim:
l. Anoperator for opening and closing windows with Swinging sashes comprising a guide mounted on a window frame'str'ucture; a bar, an intermediate member slidably mounted on said bar for parallel movement relative to said bar anda lever sliding through said guide for opening and nearly closing a window sash whenever said lever is in an aligned position with said bar, and said member, said bar having one end hinged to said window sash; a meansv mounted on said intermediate member for stopping the inward movement of said member ata predeterminedposition; a means for connecting said bar to said intermediate member for transmitting force through said lever, said member and said bar to nearly close said sash; a pivot connecting said lever to said member and means engageable between said lever and said bar for moving said bar relative tovsaid member as said leverv is rotated aboutsaid pivot and for transmitting force against said sash from said lever through said bar.
2V. An operator for opening and closing windows with swinging sashes in accordance with claim l wherein said means for stopping therinward movement of said member at a predetermined position consists of an abutment aflixed to said member for engagement with said guide.
3. An operator for opening and closing windows with swinging sashes in accordance with claim 1 wherein said means for stopping the inward movement of saidmember at a predetermined position consists of -a ange formed at the outside end of said member for engagement with said guide. v i

An operator for opening and closing windows with swinging sashes in accordance with claim l wherein said means for connecting said bar to said intermediate member for transmitting force through said lever, said member and said bar to nearly close said sash consists of a projection on said member and an abutment on said bar engageable by said projection whenever the said lever is aligned with said bar and said member.
5. An operator for opening and closing windows with swinging sashes in accordance. with claim l wherein said means for connecting said bar to said intermediate member for transmitting force through said lever, said member and said bar to nearly close said sash consists of a pin mounted on said member and a slot in said bar having said pin passing therethrough, one end of said slot being engageable by said pin whenever the said lever is aligned with said bar and said member.

An operator for opening and closing windows with swinging sashes in accordance with claim l wherein said means engageable between said lever and said bar for moving said bar relative to said member as said lever is rotated about said pivot and for transmitting force against said sash from said lever through said bar consists of a projection afxed to said lever and a set of abutments on said bar engageable by said projection.

An operator for opening and closing windows with swinging sashes in accordance with claim 1 wherein said means engageable between said lever and said bar for moving saidk bar relative to said member as said lever is rotated about said pivot and for transmitting force against said sash from said leverthrough said -bar consists of a projection aixed to said lever and a slot in said bar having sides engageable by said projection.

An operator for opening and closing windows with swinging sashes comprising a guide mounted on a window frame structure; a bar, an intermediate member and a lever sliding through said guide for opening and nearly closing a window sash whenever said lever is in an aligned position with said bar and said member, said bar having one end hinged to said window sash, said inter.- mediate member slidably mounted on said bar; stop means on said member for engagement with said guide whensaidsash is moved to a nearly closed position from. an open position; a pivot connecting` one end of said lever to the other end of said member; a projection on said member between said pivot and said one end of said lever; a first abutment on saidy bar for engagement by said projection to force said sash from said nearlyV closed position to a tightly closed position as said lever is swung about said pivot from said aligned position to a clockwise position -by movement of said bar relative to said member by the action of said lever; a second abutment on said bar for engagement by said projection to force said sash from said nearly closed position to said tightly closed position as said lever is swung about said pivot from said aligned position to a counterclockwise position by movement of said bar relative to said member by the action of said lever and athird abutment on said bar for engagement by said projection to force said sash from said tightly closed position to said nearly closed position as said lever is swung about said pivot from either said clockwise or said counterclockwise position .to said aligned position by movement of said bar relative to said member by the action of said lever.
9. An operator for opening and closing windows with swinging sashes comprising a guide mounted on a window framel structure; a bar, an intermediate member and a lever sliding through said guide for opening and nearly closing a'window sash whenever said lever is in an aligned position with said bar and said member, said bar having one end hinged to said window sash, said intermediate member slidably mounted on said bar for parallel motion to the center line of said bar; a ange on the end of said member in nearest proximity to said window sash for engagement with said guide when said sash is moved to a nearly closed position from an open position; a pivot connecting one end of said lever to the other end of said member; a projection on said member between said pivot and said one end `of said lever; and a slot cam in said bar for engagement by said projection to force said sash from said nearly closed position to a tightly closed position as said lever is swung about said pivot from said aligned position to either a clockwise or counterclockwise position by movement of said bar relative to said member by the action of said lever and to force said sash from said tightly closed position to said nearly closed position as said lever is swung about said pivot from either said clockwise or said counterclockwise position to said aligned position by movement of said bar relative to said member by the action of said lever.
