BLASTING DEVICE.
EBSQIFECATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 306,430, dated October 14, 1884. Application mea Julyzn, 1ss4. No man.)
.'[b all whom it 11i/ay concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. Rien'ron, of Helena, in the county-of Phillips and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvemei'lts in J3lasting Devices; and
I do hereby' declare the following to be afull,
' and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafterdescribed, and pointed out iu the claim. The accompanying drawing is a View of my improvement in vertical section.
A represents apile of any suitable size, the lower end, a, of which ispointed, and may, if desired, be provided with a. pointed metallic cap, for the purpose of preventing. damage to the pile when driven iu the ground. A short distance above the pointed end of the pile is formed a recess or cavity, b, in which is placed a cart-ridge, B, .of any suitable character, the outer face of the-cartridge resting ilush with the. outer face of the pile. From this cartrid'ge leads a. wire, c, the latter being retained in position by means of sta-ples d, secured in the pile; or, if desired, a groove may be formed the length ot the pile and the wire set therein, the-wire extending to the top of the pile. Af- 3 ter the cartridge has been inserted in the re' cess in the pile', the latter is driven dou-n in the ground and the wire connected u 'ith suitable battery and the cartridge exploded,th ereby' blasting the earth or other substance in which the pile is driven. By this arrangement ot' parts work may be executed by laborers that would otherwise require skilled labor. This device is well adapted for blasting out old pilesor stumps, and also for opening the earth in building canals, &c., being exceed- .ingly simple, ellective, 'and'eeonomicnL Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetteis Patent, is- Y 5 The combination, with awooden pile having one end thereof pointed, of a cartridgelocated in a recess formed in the side of the pile` .above said pointed end, and a wire connected H.
