To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEVI GALLA'HER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Businessburg, in the county of Belmont and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.-

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a side view. Fig. 2 is a perspective view. Fig. 3 is a front View, sh owing the head in cross-section. Fig. 4 is avertical section, and Fig. 5 is a horizontal section, taken on the line x w in Fig. 3.

This invention has relation to picks having reversible heads; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices,

as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying dra\vings, the letter A designates the handle of the pick, and B the separable head, which is connected to said handle by means of a box-seat, G, which is secured to the end of the handle. The handle is of wood, and is always used with the It is curved upward a little toward the head, as indicated at D, to counterbalance the working-point of the head, which is always the longest.

E represents the metallic bOX'SCZLU, having its lateral walls F extended to clasp the end of the handle, and being secured thereto by a rivet, c. The extensions II are formed with flanges K, which are oblique, so that the seat for the handle end is of flaring or dovetail form.

L is the way or seat in that portion ofthe bOX E which projects beyond the handle. This opening is of rectangular form, and the lower margin of its wall is laterally notched at m on each side. The end wall, 10, of the hGELdDOX E is slightly oblique, in order that when the pick-head is in position therein, resting against the end wall, 10, its long or working point will be inclined inward. The head 13 is of elongated form, having the two blades or points P extending in opposite directions. In cross-section its body portion is rectangular, the faces being parallel on oppositesides along the middle part and tapering toward the ends or terminal points.

On each side of the pick-head Bis a middle lug, Z, which, when the upper point is introduced into the box-seat E, is designed to engage the notch m of the wall of said seat.

V indicates the key or wedge, which is passed through the eye or seat E between the pick-head and the end of the handle, as commonly used. hen, however, it is desired that the pick-point shall be less oblique, the wedge is introduced at the back of the eye, next the end wall, w, thereof. When so arranged, the pick is better adapted for cutting square corners, as required in certain operations in mining. \Vhen one point has been dulled by working, the pick-head is reversed in the eye, and the other point is worked. When the back of a point is dubbed off, the pick-head is taken out of the box-seat or eye, turned one-half around, and replaced with the same point downward, having the worn side in front. This operation is designed to avoid sharpening as far as possible.

Several pick-heads may be employed in suecession with the same handle. The pick-head, when keyed in position, is readily detached by a blow upon the short point. As the pickhead is solid from end to end, and made without eye or opening, its stroke is always firm and solid.

Having described this invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

1. The pick-head made with parallel oppo site faces in its middle portion and tapering at its ends, and having the lateral central lugs, Z, adapted to engage the edge of the box-seat, substantially as specified.

2. The handle A, curved upwardly toward the head, and provided with the boxseat or eye E, having the lateral recesses m, in combination with the pick-head B, having the central lateral lugs, and the plain key or wedge V, substantially as specified.

3. The combination, with the pick-handle, of the rectangular box-seat or eye for the head, having the recess m, and lateral extensions H, formed with oblique flanges K, designed to form a flaring or dovetail seat for the end of the handle, substantially as specified.
