IMPROVEMENT IN STONE-CUTTING TOOLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,0 I4, dated February 5, 1878; application filed January 5, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD L. ARENDELL, of Rochester, in the county of Butler and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Stone-Cutting Tools; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a vertical section of my stone-cutting tool. Fig. 2 is an end View. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the band, and Fig. 4 represents modifications thereof.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a head or stock, and the devices for attaching stone-cutting tools thereto, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawing, to which reference is made, fully illustrates the invention.
A represents the head or stock for attaching different kinds of stone-cutting tools. This head or stock consists, as it were, of two straight arms set at an obtuse angle, with an eye in the center at the angle, for the insertion of the handle B, as shown.
The under side of each arm of the head is provided with a longitudinal groove, a, made on an incline, in such a manner that the outer end of the groove will be the deepest, gradually diminishing in depth to the handle.
The armsof the head are made slightly tapering, as shown, so that bands 0 O can be placed on them from the ends and driven farther up to fasten the tools.
Various tools may be used in this head or stock. D is the rock-hammer, with shank I). E is the pickax. G G are the bush-hammer teeth, and H is the pick-point, having a lug, b, in the center, as shown.
For attaching the pick H or hammer D, the small bands C O are used; but for attaching the other tools a long band, (3, is used, said latter band having a smaller slot or opening under the head, as shown. All the tools are fastened with key-wedges I.
This invention renders all the tools more easily portable, and the tools can be easily and quickly exchanged, one for another, as occasion may demand.
- What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The head or stock A, constructed as described, with two arms set at an obtuse angle, with a handle, 13, in the center, each arm having a longitudinal inclined groove, a], in combination with bands 0 O and key-wedges I, for the ready attachment of various stone-cutting tools, as herein set forth.
