POSTAL CABIN ET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 306,246, dated October '7, 1884,
Application filed June 3, 1884. No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LYMAN C. GRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Dodge, in the county of WVebster and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Postal Cabinets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a device for holding letters, papers, documents, and other articles; and it consists of an improvement on the invention for which Letters Patent No. 275,194: were granted to me April 8,1883, for Postal Cabinet.
The object of the present improvement is to make the leaves having pockets for holding the letters, &c., more simple and less expensive in construction.
By my present improvement the panel there described is dispensed with, and also the top and bottom hems and the corner soldering, and thus fewer pieces of material used when tin is employed to construct the pockets and their supports.
My improvement is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of one side and edge of a leaf. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 00 0c of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a modification of Fig. 1; and Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 7 detached views of features forming subordinate parts of my improvement.
Referring to the drawings as representing my present improvement in leaves, A A (see Fig. 6) represent strips of tin doubled to form side connecting-supports.
B is a wide strip or sheet of thin metal, which forms the body of the device, and takes the place of the panel in my previous patent. D is a pocket formed by turning up the ends of sheets B by any suitable crimping mechanism. The strip B is soldered to the inner edges of the side supporting-strips, A.
B, Fig. 1, is a single, top-pocket strip or sheet, which is bent over the ends of the inner edges, b of the strips A, and provided with a pocket, one each side of the leaf. The lower central strips, B, are turned up to form pockets on opposite sides, and are soldered on their strip then carried over the top of the connecting-strips and down the opposite side, and provided with a pocket on the opposite lower side, and the edges of this single strip soldered to the connecting-strips. In such case the leaf with the two pockets could be used to hold newspapers or similar articles; or, if it is desired to have more than one pocket on either side of the leaf, strips such as B may be employed in addition to the single bent strip or sheet B, already described, as a top-pocket strip, as shown in Fig. 2. I do not, however, wish to restrict my invention to any particular number of pockets, or to particular shapes or material.
When it is desired to use the leaves for holding bills or long-folded documents, the pockets maybe divided and their sides inclosed by the use of the independent detachable strips E F.
E are side strips provided with ears 6, which are adapted to slide under, the central strips, B, and next to the connecting-strips A. The divisional strip F is provided with an ear, 9, which may he slid under the upper pocketsheet, B. r
H is a slip of metal corresponding to slip 12 in my previous patent, but having painted, stamped, or otherwise placed thereon a triplicate, instead of a duplicate, index, and bent so that its arms may slip under the pockets, and the index-characters may be displayed on the opposite sides and on the front edge of the connecting-strips and adjacent to the pockets.
The various uses to which these leaves may be put, and the various kinds of supports to which they may be attached, are so fully set forth in my previous patent, No. 275,194, that it is unnecessary to repeat such description here.
The improvement which I now claim is- 1. In a device for holding letters or other more of the independent adjustable divisional articles, the pocket-sheet bent over the ends of strips, whereby the said pockets may be di the inner edges of the side supporting-strips, vided into separate receptacles, substantially and in combination therewith, whereby said as described.
5 sheet is supported and the side strips securely In testimony whereof I affix my signature in I 5 bound and held together, as and for the purpresence of two witnesses.
pose herein described. LYMAN O. GRAY.
