United States Patent 3,060,525 SASHLESS WINDOW STRUCTURE FOR COMBINATION DOORS Romuald Migneault and Fernand W. Migneault, both of 332 St. Andre, Gatineau, Quebec, Canada, and Robert Miller Wallace, 190 Main St., Hull, Quebec, Canada Filed Oct. 6, 1960, Ser. No. 61,007 1 Claim. (Cl. -36) This invention relates to a sashless Window structure for combination doors and the like.
Combination doors are in widespread use in domestic and commercial buildings. Such doors usually include interchangeable glass and screen panels. Moreover, the glass panel as heretofore employed usually includes a metal or wood sash removably mounted in a metal or wood frame.
It is an object of this invention to provide a sashless window structure for door and window openings which includes a glass panel of sashless nature, such panel being vertically adjustable to provide a ventilating opening of selected variable size, and wherein the panel comprises a pair of readily removable sections.
The invention resides in a sashless window structure comprising a frame having an opening therein, a sill, head piece and jambs defining said opening, a sashless glass panel removably mounted in said opening and having an upper and a lower section, said frame having opposed shoulders on said jambs, said upper section being removably seated on said shoulders and having a top edge engageable with said head piece, said lower section being slidably mounted in said jambs and having a lower edge engageable with said sill, said upper and lower sections having mutually overlapping portions.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which FIGURE 1 is a side elevation of a door in accordance with the invention,
FIGURE 2 is a partial sectional perspective view of the door,
FIGURE 3 is a section one line 33 of FIGURE 1, and
FIGURE 4 is a section on line 4-4 of FIGURE 1.
In the drawing, 1 is a main door frame which may be made of wood, steel, aluminum or the like and which is provided with a rectangular window opening 2. A metal, plastic composition, or the like auxiliary frame 3 extends around the edge of frame 1 defining the opening 2. preferably, the frame 3 has a channel section 4 fitting about the edge of frame 1. The auxiliary frame 2 constitutes a head piece 5, side jambs 6 and sill 7.
A sashless glass panel 8 is removably mounted in frame 3 and comprises an upper section 9 and a lower section 10. The top edge portion of panel section 9 is received in a groove 11 formed between ribs or flanges 12 and 13 on frame 3. The side edge portions of panel section 9 seat against a flange 14 on frame 3, and the lower edge portion of such section seats upon shoulders 15 constituted by the ends of flanges 16 on frame 3 and extending to the sill 7. It will be observed that each shoulder 15 constitutes the termination of a flange 14.
Panel section 10 has its top edge portion overlapping the lower edge portion of panel section 9 and its side edge portions seating on flanges 16. Section 10 has a channel 17 of metal, plastic composition or the like em bracing and bonded to the lower edge portion thereof as by adhesive 17a. Channel 17 has a forwardly projecting flange 18 which may be manually grasped to impart vertical sliding movement to panel section 10.
Means for locking panel section 10 in closed or one of a series of open positions comprises a vertically extending 3,060,525 Patented Oct. 30, 1962 flange or rib 19 on each side of auxiliary frame 3 and engaging the side edge portions of panel section 10. It will be observed that flanges 16 and ribs 19 form therebetween a groove 20 for reception of the side edge portions of section 10. Ribs 19 extend upwardly from the sill and terminate approximately opposite the shoulders 15. Each rib 19 has a rectangular notch 21 adjacent the sill for reception of a locking bar 22 reciprocally mounted in a housing 23 carried by channel 17. A spring 24 urges each bar 22 outwardly into notch-engaging position. A handle 25 is fixed to each bar 22 by means of a pin 26 which extends through a slot 27 in the housing 23 It will be apparent that the handles 25 may be manually grasped to reciprocate the bars out of locking position. Bars 22 are also provided with a series of opposed notches 28 each having a curved cam surface 29 for engagement by a complementarily curved surface 30 on the locking bar. Thus, when the panel section 10 is in closed position with the bars 22 in the rectangular notches 21, the section 10 cannot be moved until the bars are manually retracted. However, following retraction of the bars and upward movement of the section 10 the bars may be released and, on further upward movement of the panel section the bars will automatically enter a pair of notches 28 to retain the section in one of the open positions defined by the notches 28.
Means for holding the upper edge portion of panel section 10 in snug engagement with the lower edge portion of panel section 9 in the closed position of panel section 10 may comprise a pair of rollers 31, each carried by a bracket 32 reciprocally mounted in a housing 33 mounted on frame 3 and urged towards the panel section 10 by a spring 34.
Preferably panel section 9 is provided with a pair of projecting panel dividing buttons 35 closely adjacent the upper edge of panel section 10 in the closed position thereof. Thus, on opening movement of panel section 10, the latter will engage the dividers 35 to separate the panel sections and facilitate the opening sliding movement of panel section 10.
It will be apparent that the panel section 10 may be readily removed from the door assembly for cleaning or other purposes by sliding such section upwardly until its lower edge portion clears the grooves 20 and rollers 31 when the section 10 may be lifted forwardly out of the frame. Moreover, on removal of panel section 10, section 9 is also free to be lifted forwardly out of the frame.
A screen panel 36 may be associated with the assembly. As shown, the panel 36 has an edge head 37 for mounting in a groove 38 on frame 3.
Preferably, the sill 7 has a flange 39 for engagement by the channel 17 in the closed position of panel section 10.
A resilient Weatherstrip 40 may be provided on the lower edge of channel 16 for sealing engagement with the sill 7.
It will be understood that rollers 31 enga'ge panel section 10 at a point below the lower edge of upper section 9 and, of course, below shoulders 15, to permit forward movement of panel section 9. Such point may be approximately one inch below shoulders 15. The thickness of groove 20 is preferably only about one-sixteenth inch greater than the thickness of panel section 10.
We claim:
A sashless window structure for combination doors comprising a main wood frame :having a window opening therein, an auxiliary frame of plastic composition mounted on said main frame and surrounding said opening and having a headpiece, side jambs, and a sill, each of said headpiece, jambs and sill having an exterior channel therein receiving a portion of said main frame, each said side jarnb having a pair of spaced flanges extending perpendicularly from said sill, said flanges terminating in spaced relation to said headpiece in varying distance therefrom, the longer one of said flanges having an end constituting a shoulder, and a third flange extending perpendicularly from said headpiece and terminating at said shoulder, a sashless glass panel having an upper section seated on said shoulders and a lower section seated on said sill, said lower section engaging opposed faces of said first-named spaced flanges, said upper section engaging said third flanges, said sill having a flange extending from one of said jarnbs to the other of said jambs, said sill flange being engageable by said lower section, said headpiece having a pair of spaced flanges extending from one of said jambs to the other of said jambs, said upper section engaging opposed faces of said headpiece flanges, said lower section having a portion in overlapping engagement with said upper section, and a pressure applying roller mounted on each said jamb, said rollers engaging said overlapping portion of said lower section, each said roller being disposed between the adjacent ends of said jamb flanges.
