Description

PATENTED NOV. 6, 1860,
:r. M. HUNTER.
APPARATUS FOR TRYING OILS.
UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE.
J. M. HUNTER, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
Specification f rming part of Letters Patent No. 30575, dated November 6, 1860.
To all whom it may concern.-
city, county, and State of N ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Process of Rendering or Trying Out Oil, 850.; andl do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, formiu g a part .of this specifiea tion. I I The chief objects of my invention are the application of boiler-heat to whale-blubber or other similar-materials without burning such substances, and the subjection of said materials to'the thorough action of a press within the boiler,' botli the boiling action and the pressing action being simultaneously applied. By applying heat and great pressure at the same time the oil is more rapidly expressed, and at the same time a larger per cent. of oil or fatty matter is obtained.
My invention consists in-the combination 'ofaboiler and press, the latter being placed withiuthe former, for the purpose of rendering blubber or other fatty matters by the represented with side walls, D, a fire-place, G,
flue E, and smoke-pipe I. Within this furnace is placed a semi-cylindrical boiler, A, the bottom and sides of which are exposed to the heat of the flue E, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3,
the direction of the smoke and heated air beiug indicated by red arrows. The boiler has large doors B, for introducing blubber or other material, and also several small openings, (J, through which the contents of the boiler may be conveniently stirred by flexible scrapers or other means.
A crib for receiving the blubber or other materialis arranged within the boiler, the bot- 4 tom and sides of the same consisting of the T- shaped bars supported by suitable ribs; This crib prevents the scraps or other solid matter Be it known that I, J. M. HUNTER, of thefrom burning by coming in contact with the sides of the boiler, and at the sainetimeitallows the oil to passfreely out of the crib between the T-shaped bars. The crib also serves as a press-hoop, in which the scraps are pressed by the movable heads or followers L, which are operated by the right-and-left-hand screw M, in connection with the gear-wheels N and R and hand-wheel S. There are four of these heads L, thus formingtwo presses,as' it were, within the boiler. These heads L being set apart, as seen in Fig. 1, the blubber or other material is put into the crib J and the doors B are closed. Then heat is applied to the boiler by means of the furnace. ,The oil, as it is tried out, fio'ws' mostly from the crib J, fill.- ing the lower part of the boiler. This oil may be drawn oil through faucet V from time to time, thus preventing the necessity of transmitting the heat through a large stratum of oil to the scraps within the crib, and also preventing the danger of a great accumulation of highly-heated oil within the boiler-a 'eonsider-.
ation of great importance when rendering oil on shipboard.
After the blubber or other matter is thoroughly heated the followers or heads L may be made to act upon the scraps with any de-' sired force, thus expressing the oil at the same time that the heat of the boiler is continued.
The crib may be made of perforated flat or round bars, or of perforated plates, or with wire-gauze, or otherwise; and the various details of my apparatus may be somewhat varied without departing from my invention, so long as the construction and operation are substantially the same.
I am aware thatin various modes of stirring the contentp of the boilerwhile rendering blubher or other fatty substances more or less pressure has been employed; therefore I confine my claims to the use ofa press, properly so called, or to devices which will produce a thorough expression of the oil or fatty matter instead of a smaller portion of the same, as heretofore"accomplished.
In the present application I confine my claims to the apparatus above described, leaving the process for a separate application for Letters Patent.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters scraps from coming in contact with the boiler, V
Patent of the United States,-issubstantially as described. 1. The above describedarrangement and 3. The employment of the pressure-heads combination of the press and boiler, the former and right-and-left-hand screws, by means of being placed Within the latter, for the purpose which the oil may be separated'from the scraps, of rendering oils or otheri fatty matters by substantially in the manner described; thoroughly pressing the scraps while the same I are exposed to the boiler-heater steam-heat, MORRISON H substantially in the manner and for the pur- Witnesses: poses described. WMLTHOMPSON,
2. The use of the crib for preyenting the B. GIVONS.
