(Cl. 125208) This invention relates to sporting apparatus and more particularly to a hand warmer for various types of weapons.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a hand warmer for detachable securement to the forearm of a rifle which will warm the hand of the rifleman during use.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a hand warmer which may form an integral part of the stock of a hand bow, whereby the archer may more conveniently and accurately use such weapon for outdoor use.

Other objects of the invention are to provide a hand warmer bearing the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture and efficient in operation.

For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:

FIGURE 1 is a side elevational view of a hand warmer made in accordance with one form of the present invention in operative association with a rifle;

FIGURE 2 is an enlarged side elevational view, with parts broken away, of the hand warmer shown in FIG- URE 1' FIGURE 2A is a sectional view taken in the direction of the arrows 2A2A of FIGURE 2;

FIGURE 3 is a top plan view of the hand warmer shown in FIGURE 2; and

FIGURE 4 is a side elevational view of a modified form of hand warmer in operative association with a bow.

Referring now more in detail to the drawing, and more particularly to 'FIGURES 1 to 3 thereof, a hand warmer made in accordance with one form of the present invention is shown to include a fuel storage tank 11 of generally elongated U-shaped configuration, and of hollow construction, within which a sufiicient quantity of liquid fuel is retained. Because of the U-shaped configuration and spring-like action of the sides of the fuel storage tank 11, it forms an upwardly opening and inwardly sprung cradle 12 within which the forearm :14 of the rifle may be releasably disposed, thus releasably securing these parts together. A catalytic type burner element 16, for consuming fuel from the interior of the fuel storage compartment 11, is disposed at one end thereof, and is shielded from direct contact with the hand of the rifleman by means of a shield or cover 18. The fuel tank 11 and burner element 16 comprise the main body portion of the hand warmer. The tank 11 also includes a plurality of external ribs 19 which maintain the tank in spaced apart relationship with the shield or cover 18, which extends forwardly beyond the tank 11 and the burner element 16, thus defining an air space 21 between the shield or cover 18 and the tank 11, said air space 21 having a forward extension thereof positioned forwardly of the tank 11 and the burner element '16 through which air may travel for supporting combustion at the burner element 16.

As is more clearly shown in FIGURES 2 and 3 of the drawing, the cover or shield member 18 is of generally the 3,057,342 Patented Oct. 9, 1962 same shape as the fuel storage tank 11, but of slightly larger size, so as to substantially envelop it. The cover or shield member 18 is also longer than the tank 11 so as to have its forward end projecting forwardly beyond the tank 11 and the burner element 16. The side walls of the shield or cover 18 are provided with a plurality of perforations 20 through which air may pass into the space 21 between the tank, burner, and shield, and also the forward extension of said space 21 positioned forwardly of the tank 11 and burner element 16, to support combustion of the fuel by the fuel consuming element '16.

It will now be recognized that this hand warmer 10 may be readily assembled with the rifle by pressing the forearm 14 of the rifle into the upwardly opening U-shaped tank 11, whereupon the spring-like sides thereof will clampingly engage the forearm 14. The catalytic element will then provide sufficient heat to warm the shield or cover 18, thus transmitting heat to the hand of the rifleman during use.

In FIGURE 4 of the drawing, a slightly modified form of hand warmer 22 is shown to include an outer cover 24 that is provided with perforations 25 through which air may pass for supporting combustion of fuel therewithin in a manner hereinbefore described. This hand warmer 22 forms an integral part of the stock 26 in a how, so as to enable the bow hand of the archer to be warmed during use.

While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.

What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:

1. A hand warmer for hand-held weapons comprising, in combination, a main body portion having clamp means for attachment to a weapon, said main body portion including a fuel storage tank of generally hollow construction and of generally U-shaped cross-sectional configuration and a fuel-consuming element for consuming fuel from said fuel storage tank, said fuel-consuming element being connected to one longitudinal extremity of said fuel storage tank and being in communication with the interior thereof, and a heat conductive manually engageable cover enclosing and defining an air space with said main body portion for protecting the hand of a person holding the device from said fuel-consuming element, said cover being of substantially the same generally U-shaped configuration as said fuel storage tank in slightly larger size, said fuel storage tank having exterior ribs projecting outwardly therefrom for engagement with the interior of said cover to define said air space between said cover and said fuel storage tank, and said cover including a plurality of perforations extending completely therethrough for accommodating the passage of air into said air space between said cover and said fuel storage tank and for supporting combustion at said fuel-consuming element.

2. The combination according to claim 1 including a weapon comprising an archery bow having a hand grip portion defined in part by said fuel storage tank.
