UNITED STATES PATENT firmer HENRY nn BUS, or CINCINNATI, OHIO.
HOOP FASTENER OR KEEPER.
SPECIFICATION" forming part of Letters Patent No. 305,677, dated September 23, 1884:.
Application filed July 28, 1884. (N model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY DE Bus, of Gincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, havein vented a new and useful Hoop-Fastener or Hoop- Keeper, of which the following is a specification. 7
My invention relates to an improved form of fastener or keeper for the hoops of kegs and other cooperagework; and it consists of a hook-headed tack of the peculiar construction hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1, 2 and 3 are respectively a side, a back, and a top view of a fastener or keeper embodying my invention. Fig. 4is a section of aportion of a keg, showing one of my'keepers in position.
My keeper is (by means of a suitable die) cut and swaged or stamped out of around wire into the form represented, in which the shank has a four-square neck, a, and is thence alternately cylindrical, b b b, and four-square a a a,and terminates in an acute pyramidal point, 0. The head of the keeper consists of a laterally-extending projection, d.
Fig. 4: shows the way in which the keeper is applied, the same being so driven as to bring the shank in close juxtaposition to the hoop on its upper or chine edge, and with its 0 head overlapping the hoop.
The shank, eomposed of a prismatic or foursquare' neck and alternately cylindrical and prismatic sections or zones, the last prismatic zone passing into the form of an acute pyramid, has several very decided advantages. For example, such keeper, by the mere act of driving, becomes immovablyanchored in the substance of the wood and can neither fall out nor turn around. Its laterally-extending head fits snugly over the hoop, preventing slippage of the latter over it, and is free from pro jections that would be liable to mutilate the hands of the operator.
In. contradistinction from keepers that require to be driven before the hoop is applied, my keeper may be applied at any time after the cask has been completely hooped, and even after protracted use of the cask, and does not necessitate the removal of the hoop for its ap plication.
I claim as a new article of manufacture- The fastener or keeper for cooperage-hoops,
consisting of laterally-extending head d,whose four-square neck a is joined to an alternatelycylindrical and-four-square shank, b a b a. b a, that terminates in the pyramidalpoint c, substantially as set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunt set my hand. i
. HENRY DE BUS.
