(Cl. 214) This invention relates to a goggle of the type used for protecting the eyes of a welder.
Goggles of this general type often have removable lens covers which may be replaced as the same become damaged due to flying sparks of welding material.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a lens carrying unit which may be removable from the body portion of the goggle.
Another object of the invention is to provide a lens carrying unit which will be of a more rigid or stiff material than the body of the goggle which may be of a soft flexible material so that it may be readily drawn into snug engagement with the face.
Another object of the invention is to prevent the spreading of the sides of the opening in the body in which the lens carrying unit is located as there is strain placed upon the more flexible body portion.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the complete goggle except the head straps are omitted;
FIGURE 2 is an elevational view looking from the back of the goggle;
FIGURE 3 is a section on substantially line 33 of FIGURE 2; and
FIGURE 4 is a section on substantially line 4--4 of FIGURE 3.
In proceeding with this invention, the body portion of the goggle is molded from some plastic material of a soft and flexible character to be snugly drawn into contact with the face, the material yielding somewhat so as to conform to the shapes of different faces as may be encountered in its use. The plastic material of the body is of the flexible type such as polyethylene, and there is provided a cutout opening into which a stiffer plastic unit for carrying the lens is positioned. This unit is provided with a flange which may be assembled with the body by passing the flange through the opening in the body and assembling a frame to embrace the flange. Some integral locking means between the parts will hold the frame snugly against the marginal edge of the opening and, in order to prevent the marginal edges from spreading when strain is applied to the body, pins are provided on the frame to extend into holes in the marginal edge to lock the relatively stiff frame thereto and prevent a spreading apart of opposite sides of the opening and thus prevent release of the lens holding unit.
With reference to the drawings, designates generally the body of the goggle which has a generally flat front wall 11 with walls 12 molded to extend rearwardly therefrom in a generally cup shaped manner and with the edges 13 flared outwardly so as to be more comfortable in their engagement with the face. This body is molded from some flexible soft material such as polyethylene.
Straps may be located in the holding means 14 for the straps for drawing the body snugly into engagement with the face. In the front wall 11 of the body there is a window opening designated 15 (see FIGURE 3) about which there is a marginal edge which is generally rectangular in shape and about which there is a marginal edge 16 which will be hereinafter referred to.
The lens carrying unit is designated generally 18 and is a separate unit to be assembled with the body. This lens carrying unit is of a stiffer or more rigid plastic material for its better functioning in the carrying of the dark lens and its cover. This lens carrying unit is generally rectangular in shape as can be well seen in FIGURE 1, this being formed by a generally U-shaped channel extending along its four sides and providing a window opening 19 in its center. The top channel 20 as may be well seen in FIGURE 3 comprises a top wall 22, a back wall 23 and a front wall 24 while the bottom U-channel 21 has a bottom wall 25, a back wall 26 and a front wall 27. The end channel 28 of this unit has an end wall 29, a back wall 30 and a front wall 31 while the opposite end 32 does not have a channel formation but only a front wall 33 which extends from wall 24 to wall 27 in substantially the same plane as these walls while leaving the complete absence of a wall comparable to the wall :29. Likewise a wall 34 similar to this wall 33 joins the back walls 23 and 26 to provide a rectangular structure similar to that just described. The lenses are positioned in this carrying unit through this open end 36 by means of a carrying frame 37 having a colored lens 38 and protecting cover lens 39 assembled therewith on either side of the T-shaped framelike portion as seen at 40 (FIGURE 3) and provided with a larger handle part 41 which may be grasped for manually inserting the carrying frame into or from the channel shape lens carrying unit 18 above described. Springs 42 along both upper and lower sides of the unit serve to hold the lenses snugly against the front walls 24, 27 as can be readily observed in FIGURE 4.
From the rear walls of this unit assembly 23, 26, 30 and 34 there extends a flange 43 which is of a shape and size to snugly fit through the opening 16 in the front wall 11 of the body.
A rectangular frame 45 of a size and shape to fit over the flange 43 is positioned over this flange as seen in FIGURES 2 and 3. This frame 43 is pressed against the inner surface of the marginal edge and snaps over and beneath lugs 46 projecting outwardly from the flange 43. These lugs are positioned at such distance from the walls 23, 26, 30 and 34 that the frame is pressed snugly against the inner marginal edges of the opening 16 to draw the walls 23, 26, 30 and 34 against the frame and provide a secure binding between the frame and the marginal edges of the opening.
It will be remembered that the body material is of a much softer pliable material, and when it is drawn snugly about the head, there is some possibility of the material being drawn from between the frame and the rear surface of the separable unit 18, and to prevent this I have provided .pins 50 which for convenience are one piece with the frame 45 and which extend through holes 51 (FIG- URE 3) in the marginal edge of the body and holes 52 in the flange 43, and these pins are located at generally diametrically opposite points from the opening 16 and are similarly located in the frame 45 and in flange 43 so that opposite spreading of these marginal edge portions away from each other is prevented by these pins. The pin 50 will usually stay in position without heading over. However, the pins may be headed over as shown by applying heat and pressure after they are in place.
I claim:
1. In a goggle a flexible body portion having a window opening with a marginal edge about said opening provided with holes at opposite sides of said opening, a separable lens carrying unit having a surface engaging in face to face contact with one side of said marginal edge with a flange extending rearwardly therefrom through said window opening, a frame embracing said flange and engaging in face to face contact with the opposite side of said marginal 3.
