Description

(Cl. 259-134) This invention relates to domestic mixer devices and in particular to an agitator or beating element for use in such devices.
It is an object of the invention to provide an agitator of simple and inexpensive construction which is easily assembled without the use of tools and which may be firmly or releasably locked in its assembled position on the operating shaft of the mixer device.
It is another object of the invention to provide an agitator which is easily and quickly coupled to or removed from the mixer device and which may itself be readily dismantled enabling the component parts thereof to be conveniently and thoroughly cleaned.
In accordance with these objects, the present invention contemplates the provision of an agitator comprising a shaft formed at one end with a non-circular terminal portion; a stud secured to and projecting from the outer end of the non-circular terminal portion of said shaft; and agitating means comprising a pair of endless loops, each loop having diametrically opposite portions in substantial abutment with corresponding portions of the other to dispose said loops so that they substantially intersect at diametrically opposite points with one loop extending across the outside of the other at diametrically opposite points, said loops formed with aligned openings at their points of intersection for reception of the non-circular terminal portion of the shaft, the lower opening in the outer one of said loops consisting of a hole having a slot communicating with and radiating therefrom, the width of said slot being less than the width of the hole, said hole being large enough to permit the head of the stud to pass therethrough and the slot being of a width to permit the stud to move therealong while preventing the stud head from moving therethrough, said stud efiective upon engagement with said slot to releasably lock the loops in position on said shaft.
It is to be noted that the loops are not necessarily circular and the expression diametrically opposite as used herein is intended to connote points on the loops equidistant from each other either way around the loops.
Other features which may be included in accordance with the invention will be described hereinafter and referred to in the appended claims.
The invention will now be more particularly described in connection with the accompanying drawings which show by way of example one embodiment of the invention, and in which:

Referring to the drawings, the agitator comprises a shaft 19 and agitating means generally designated 12 consisting of a pair of inter'fitting loop members 14 and 16 adapted to be mounted on the shaft adjacent one end thereof. A conical collar 18 is mounted on the shaft adjacent the other end thereof and the shaft is adapted to be coupled at this end to suitable drive means which usually in this type of mixer comprises an electric motor and suitable transmission means (not shown). The shaft 10 is formed at its other end with a non-circular terminal portion 2% which as shown is of square cross section and which extends from a collar 22 preferably integrally formed with said shaft. The free end of the squared terminal portion of shaft 10 is provided with an outwardly projecting stud 24 extending co-axially therewith. The stud 24 is formed with a circular head 26 and a conical shank portion 28.
Each of the loop members 14 and 16 is in the form of an endless strip or band of a suitable somewhat resilient material. Preferably, the opposed arms 30 and 32 and 34 and 36 of the loop members 14 and 1 6 respectively, are provided with enlarged central portions designated 38 and tapered towards each end thereof from the enlarged central portion. The loop members 14 and 16 are designed to be fitted one within the other by suitable manipulation thereof whereby loop member 16 may be flexed into interfitting engagement Within loop member 14. The loop members are adapted to be mounted on the shaft 10 in such manner that their general planes are vertical and at right angles one to the other. For this purpose, each of the loop members is provided with apertures in the enlarged central portions 36 thereof at opposite points thereon equidistant from each other either way around the loop. Thus, loop member 16 is provided with square apertures 40 and 42 whilst loop member 14 is provided with a square aperture 44 and a keyhole aperture 46. Aperture 46 consists of a hole 48 having a slot 50 communicating with and radiating therefrom, the width of slot 50 being less than the width of hole 48. The hole 48 is made large enough to permit the head 26 of stud 24 to pass therethrough and the slot 50 is of a width to permit the shank 28 of the stud to move therealong Whilst preventing the stud head 26 from moving therethrough.
In assembling the agitator, the loop member 16 is disposed in interfitting engagement with loop member 14 and thereafter the square terminal portion 20 of shaft 10 is inserted through the aligned apertures 40, 42 and 44. The collar 22 serves to limit the axial movement of shaft 10 through the interfitted loop members and upon engagement of collar 22 with loop member 14, the end of the shaft is in a position aligned with the outer edge of aperture 40. With the elements arranged in this manner, the stud 24 protrudes through aperture 46 in loop member 14. The loop members 14 and 16 may then be securely interlocked by moving loop member 14 relative to loop member 16 to force the shank 28 of stud 24 along the slot 50. With the stud 24 in this position, the stud head 26 cannot move through aperture 46 and the stud thus effectively co-operates with the slot to releasably lock the loop members in position on shaft 10.
The agitator assembly may be readily dissembled by merely moving loop member 14 relative to loop member 16 to move the shank 28 of stud 24- along the slot 50 into hole 48 whereupon the shaft may be Withdrawn from the interfitting loop members 14 and 16. Thereafter, the inner loop member 16 may be disengaged from the outer loop member 14 enabling the individual components of the agitator assembly to be conveniently and thoroughly cleaned.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. An agitator for a domestic mixing machine comprising a shaft formed at one end with a non-circular terminal portion, a stud secured to and projecting from the outer end of the non-circular terminal portion of said shaft, and agitating means comprising a pair of endless loops, each loop having diametrically opposite portions in substantial abutment with corresponding portions of the other to dispose said loops so that they substantially intersect at diametrically opposite points with one loop extending across the outside of the other at diametrically opposite points, said loops formed with aligned openings at their points of intersection, the openings of the outer of said loops and the innermost opening of the inner loop being shaped to receive the non-circular terminal portion of the shaft, the outermost opening in said outer loop consisting of a hole having a slot communicating with and radiating therefrom, the Width of said slot being less than the width of the hole, said hole being large enough to permit the head of the stud to pass therethrough and the slot being of a width to permit the stud to move therealong while preventingthe stud head from moving therethrough, said stud effective upon engagement with said slot to releasably lock the loops in position on said shaft.
2. An agitator for a domestic mixing machine comprising a shaft formed at one end with a non-circular terminal portion, a stud secured to and projecting from the outer end of the non-circular terminal portion of said shaft, and agitating means comprising a pair of endless loops, each loop having diametrically opposite portions in substantial abutment with corresponding portions of the other to dispose said loops so that they substantially intersect at diametrically opposite points with one loop extending across the outside of the other at diametrically opposite points, said loops formed with aligned openings at their points of intersection, the openings of the outer of said loops and the innermost opening of the inner loop being shaped to receive the non-circular terminal portion of the shaft, the outermost opening in said outer loop consisting of a hole having a slot communicating with and radiating therefrom, the width of said slot being less than the width of the hole, said hole being large enough to permit the head of the stud to pass therethrough and the slot being of a width to permit the stud to move therealong while prevening the stud head from moving therethrough, said stud effective upon engagement with said slot to releasably lock the loops in position on said shaft, and means on said shaft adjacent the inner end of said non-circular terminal portion for limiting the movement of said loops axially of the shaft.
3. An agitator for a domestic mixing machine comprising a shaft formed at one end with a non-circular terminal portion, a stud secured to and projecting from the outer end of the non-circular terminal portion of said shaft and agitating means comprising a pair of endless loops interfitting with each other to dispose said loops in such relative positions that they substantially intersect at diametrically opposite points when assembled, said loops formed with aligned openings at their points of intersection, the openings of the outer of said loops and the innermost opening of the inner loop being shaped to receive the non-circular terminal portion of the shaft, the outermost opening in said outer loop consisting of a hole having a slot communicating with and radiating therefrom, the width of said slot being less than the Width of the hole, said hole being large enough to permit the head of the stud to pass therethrough and the slot being of a width to permit the stud to move therealong while preventing the stud head from moving therethrough, said stud adapted when engaged in said slot to releasably lock the loops in position on said shaft.
4. An agitator for a domestic mixing machine comprising a shaft formed at one end with a non-circular terminal portion, a stud secured to and projecting from the outer end of the non-circular terminal portion of said shaft and agitating means comprising a pair of readily separable endless loops, one of said loops fitting within the other to dispose said loops in suchrelative positions that they substantially intersect at diametrically opposite points when assembled, said loops formed with aligned openings at their points of intersection, the openings of the outer of said loops and the innermost opening of the inner loop being shaped to receive the non-circular terminal portion of the shaft, the outermost opening in said outer loop consisting of a hole having a slot communicating with and radiating therefrom, the width of said slot being less than the Width of the hole, said hole being large enough to permit the head of the stud to pass therethrough and the slot being of a width to permit the stud to move therealong while preventing the stud head from moving therethrough, said stud co-operating with said slot releasably to lock the loops on said shaft.
5. An agitator for a domestic mixing machine as claimed in claim 3 including means on said shaft adjacent the inner end of said non-circular terminal portion for limiting the movement of said loops axially of the shaft.
6. In a domestic mixing device having motive means for operation thereof, an agitator comprising a shaft having means at one end for ready connection with said motive means for rotation of said agitator and formed at its other end with a non-circular terminal portion, a stud secured to and projecting from the outer end of the noncircular terminal portion of said shaft, and agitating means comprising a pair of endless loops, each loop having diametrically opposite portions in substantial abutment with corresponding portions of the other to dispose said loops so that they substantially intersect at diametrically opposite points with one loop extending across the outside of the other at diametrically opposite points, said loops formed with aligned openings at their points of intersection, the openings of the outer of said loops and the innermost opening of the inner loop being shaped to receive the non-circular terminal portion of the shaft, the outermost opening in said outer loop consisting of a hole having a slot communicating with and radiating therefrom, the width of said slot being less than the width of the hole, said hole being large enough to permit the head of the stud to pass therethrough and the slot being of a width to permit the stud to move therealong while preventing the stud head from moving therethrough,
' thereby releasably locking the loops on said shaft.

In a domestic mixing device having motive means for operation thereof, an agitator comprising a shaft having means at one end for ready connection with said m0- tive means for rotation of said agitator and formed at its other end with a non-circular terminal portion, a stud secured to and projecting from the outer end of the noncircular terminal portion of said shaft, and agitating means comprising a pair of endless loops interfitting with each other to dispose said loops in such relative positions that they substantially intersect at diametrically opposite points when assembled, said loops formed with aligned openings at their points of intersection, the openings of the outer of said loops and the innermost opening of the inner loop being shaped to receive the non-circular terminal portion of the shaft, the outermost opening in said outer loop consisting of a hole having a slot communicating with and radiating therefrom, the width of said slot being less than the width of the hole, said hole being large enough to permit the head of the stud to pass therethrough and the slot being of a width to permit the stud to move therealong while preventing the stud head from moving therethrough, thereby releasably locking the loops on said shaft.

In a domestic mixing device having motive means for operation thereof, an agitator comprising a shaft having means at one end for ready connection with said motive means for rotation of said agitator and formed at its other end with a non-circular terminal portion, a stud secured to and projecting from the outer end of the noncircular terminal portion of said shaft, and agitating means comprising a pair of readily separable endless loops, one of said loops fitting within the other to dispose said loops in such relative positions that they substantially intersect to diametrically opposite points when assembled, said loops formed with aligned openings at their points of intersection, the openings of the outer of said loops and the innermost opening of the inner loop being shaped to receive the non-circular terminal portion of the shaft, the outermost opening in said outer loop consisting of a hole having a slot communicating with and radiating there- 5 from, the Width of said slot being less than the width of the hole, said hole 'being large enough to permit the head of the stud to pass therethrough and the slot being of a width to permit the stud to move therealong While preventing the stud head from moving therethrough, thereby releasably locking the loops on said shaft.
9. A device as claimed in claim 6 including means on said shaft adjacent the inner end of said non-circular terminal portion for limiting the movement of said loops axially of the shaft.
10. A device as claimed in claim 4 including means on said shaft adjacent the inner end of said non-circular terminal portion for limiting the movement of said loops axially of the shaft.
11. A device as claimed in claim 8 including means on said shaft adjacent the inner end of said non-circular terminal portion for limiting the movement of said loops axially of the shaft.
