RELEASE LOCK FOR SLIDE FASTENERS Filed Aug. 29, 1960 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 INVENTOR. LOUIS M. LLORENS gvw @ba Aug. 21, 1962 M. LLORENS RELEASE LOOK FOR SLIDE FASTENERS 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed Aug. 29, 1960 'INVENTOR. LOUIS M. LLORENS ATTOPAQV United States Patent M 3,049,780 RELEASE LOCK FOR SLIDE FASTENERS Louis M. Llorens, 114-47 Lefierts Blvd., Ozone Park, N.Y. Filed Aug. 29, 1960, Ser. No. 52,503 2 Claims. (Cl. 24-20515) This invention concerns a release lock for a slide fastener of -the type having interlocking teeth mounted on two stringers.
According to the invention there is provided a slider for the slide fastener, including two separable parts. The separable parts are locked together by a rotatable head. If the teeth of the slide fastener jam the slider at any point, the slider can be readily disassembled by turning the looking head to disengage the parts of the slider. Atf-ter correction of the obstruction, the slider can be reassembled on the stringers.
It is one object of the invention to provide releasing means for a slider of a slide fastener.
Another object is to provide a twopart slider adapted to be engaged and disengaged by turning a locking head.
A further object is to provide a slider of the character described for a slide fastener, in which the locking head may be provided with a wrench for turning.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
FIG. 1 is a top plan view of a portion of a slide fastener assembly embodying the invention.
FIG. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a top plan view similar to FIG. 1 with a portion of the slider removed.
FIG. 4 is a bottom plan view of the slide fastener assembly showing the reverse side of the assembly.
FIG. 5 is an exploded perspective view of components of the slider according to the invention.
FIGS. 6 and 7 are side and edgewise elevational views, respectively, of a key or wrench useful in tiuning the locking head of the slider.
FIG. 8 is a sectional view taken on line 88 of FIG. 7.
FIG. 9 is an end view as seen from the line 9-9 of FIG. 6.
Referring to FIGS. 1-5, there is shown a slider 10 including a base plate member 12 and a cover plate member 14. The base plate has straight parallel edge portions 16 tapering forwardly at .18 and terminating in a lug 20 extending beyond forward edge 22. Two ridges 2 4 at the rear end portion of the plate are curved to define a channel therebtween. A stationary, non-rotatable post 26 terminating in an axial tip 28 is mounted on the plate and secured by rivet 30. A head 32 including a cylindrical base portion 34 is rotatably mounted on the plate by means of a conical tip 39 engaged in a counter-sunk hole 35 in the plate. A short shank 38 is integral with due base portion 34 and terminates in a rectangular locking bar 40.
The cover plate member 14 is similar in outline to the base plate 12. An end wall 42 depends from the body of member 14. Wall 42 has a rectangular recess 44- which receives the lug 20 when the members are assembled together. A hole 46 in member 14 receives tip 28 and a rectangular slot 48 permits passage of locking bar 40 therethrough. Slot 48 is wider and longer than the locking bar. The diameter of base portion 34 is larger than the width of the slot 48 :and locking bar 40' is longer than the width of the slot. Shank 38 is substantially equal to 3,049,780 Patented Aug. 21, 1962 the thickness of the body of member 14. The base portion 34 and post 26 have equal axial length which detennines the spacing of members '12 and 14 when assembled to gether.
Depending ridges 50 near the rear end of member 14 define a channel which opposes the channel defined by ridges 24. A loop 52 secured to the outer side of member 14 retains the split looped end 54 of slider handle 55. The end 54 is engaged on loop '52 by separating the fingers 53 and then snapping them over loop 52.
FIGS. 1-4 show two cloth stringers 21 and 23 provided with beads 25, 27 at their respective opposing edges. Spaced mating teeth 31, 33 are engaged over the respective beads. 'I hese teeth have hollow projections 41, 43 which engage in each other holding the slide fastener closed. Slider 10 is disposed in FIG. 1 so that the separated portions of the stringers and teeth enter the slider between the spaced front portions of members 12, 14 and pass between ridges 24, 50 at the rear. FIG. 3 shows the teeth separated by the cylindrical base portion 34 on the base plate 12. The ridges 24 are underneath the stringers, as shown in FIG. 4, engaging the outer edges of the interfitted teeth and preventing their separation. The base plate 12 can be readily removed from the position shown in FIGS. 3 and 4 and can easily be replaced. Then the cover plate can be placed thereover. The locking bar 40 will be turned so that its length is aligned with that of the slot 48 as indicated in FIG. 5. After passage of locking bar 40 through the slot the cover member will be pressed down on the stringers so that the underside of member 14 abuts the tops of post 26 and cylinder 34. Then the locking bar will be turned to the position shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, whereupon the slider will be fully and pennanently engaged on the stringers.
When the cover and base plate members are engaged, the slider operates like a conventional slider to close and to separate the teeth in conventional manner. The members 12 and I14 can be separated and attached anywhere along the stringers including their ends which may be fonmed with fixed and separable tips 15, .17 held in a clip 19.
If desired, a wrench or key 60 can be provided as shown in FIGS. 68 for turning locking bar 40. The wrench has a shank 62 formed with a rectangular recess or slot 63 adapted to engage the locking bar 40 for turning it 90 between locking and unlocking positions of the head 32.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent 1.
