Filed May 5, 1959, Ser. No. 811,158 1 Claim. (Cl. 21S-11) This invention relates to an infants nursing bottley and has as its primary object the provision of an improved nursing bottle provided with a readily detachable nipple and characterizedv by means whereby the nipple may be readily and expeditiously stored inside the bottle when not in use, thus reducing the possibility of losing or misplacing the nipple.
An additional object of the invention is the provision of a reversible nipple-holding member which can be secured to the bottle for retaining the nipple in either operative or storage position.
Still another object of the invention resides in the provision of a protective cap which may be placed over the nipple when in storage position.
A still further object of the invention resides in the provision of such a bottle having an air vent provided with a spring-biased check valve for the purpose of facilitating the withdrawal of the contents of the bottle by the infant.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of such a bottle provided with readily removable top and bottom caps, and characterized by the absence of crevices or corners apt to collect dirt, thus facilitating the cleaning and sterilizing of the bottle.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of such a nursing bottle which is sturdy and durable in construction, reliable and efficient in operation, and relatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, assemble and utilize.
Still other objects reside in the combinations of elements, arrangements of parts and features of construction, all as will be more fully pointed out hereinafter and disclosed in the accompanying drawing, wherein there is shown a preferred embodiment of this inventive concept.

Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
Having reference now to the drawing in detail, there is generally indicated at 10 a nursing bottle or the like, of generally cylindrical conguration, provided at its upper end with external threads 11, below which threads is an external annular bead 12. The lower end of the bottle 10, which may be comprised of glass, plastic, metal or other desired substance, is also provided with external threads 13.
A nipple retaining cap 14 includes a horizontal flange 15 provided with a relatively large central aperture 16 and a depending vertical skirt 17, internally threaded to engage the external threads 11 at the top of the bottle, having internal threads 18 adapted to co-act with the threads 11.
'I'he nipple 19 includes an end portion 20' adapted to be y engaged by the mouth of the infant, and an enlarged boss ed to be engaged over the bead 12 to` hold the cap in position. v
The lower end of the bottle is provided with a closure cap generally indicated at 30 which .includes an internally threaded skirt 31 adapted to engage the threads 1'3. The cap l30 has a centrally positioned, upwardly extending boss 32 adapted to be positioned interiorly of the bottle, through which boss extends a vent port 33 which extends into a countersunk bore 34 having a tapered lower extremity 35 adapted for the reception of the point 36 of a one-way check valve. The valve 36 includes a stem 37, which is surrounded by a compression spring 38 which seats in the bore 34, the upper end of the spring being engaged by an annulus 39 which is held in position in the top of the bore by means of a knurled cap member 40. The member 4l) is provided with a vent perforation 41.
The bottom of the end cap 30 is countersunk to provide an outer ange 42 and an inner flange 43 which surrounds the vent 33. v
From the foregoing, the use and operation of the device should be readily understandable.
When it is desired to use the bottle, the cap 25 is removed and the nipple 19 is placed in the position shown in FIG. 1, with the retaining member 14 holding the same in position 'by means of the engagement of the flange with the rim 23.
The bottle Iis then lled with milk or other desired liquid, and is ready for use. The check valve 35 permits the admission of air into the bottle for venting purposes, facilitating the withdrawal of the liquid, and preventing to some extent the possibility of the infants developing colic, by the provision of some fluid in the bottle at all times.
Obviously the caps 3l) and 14 may be removed for cleaning the bottle after use, and replaced with the nipple in the storage position as shown in FIG. 2, the member 14 serving to hold the nipple in storage position, and the protective cap 25 serving to protect the nipple in substantially sterile condition.
From the foregoing it will now be seen that there is herein provided an improved infants nursing bottle which accomplishes all of the objects of this invention including many advantages of great practical utility and commercial importance.
As many embodiments may be made of this inventive concept, and as many modifications may be made in the embodiment herein shown and described, it is to be understood that all matter herein is to be interpreted merely as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
We claim:
In an infants nursing bottle, in combination, a cylindrical tubular body portion of at least substantially uniform cross section throughout its length and open at both ends, external threads adjacent one end'of said body, an external bead on said body spaced inwardly from said threads, a nipple having a marginal ilange adapted to seat on said one end of said body, a nipple retaining member having an internally threaded skirt for engaging the threads on said body and an inwardly extending flange for engaging the tlange on said nipple to secure said nipple in operative position on said one end of said body, said inwardly extending tlange engaging the flange on said nipple with said nipple inverted and extending into said body in inoperative position to secure said nipple in unliexed condition in inoperative position, a protective flat top cap of resilient material having a skirt terminating in an inwardly extending Iange, said last named ange engaging said bead to hold `said cap Yin position over `said retaining mem- Iber and over s'aid nipple in inoperativepos'ition,"external threadsiadjacent the opposite end of said body, a closure threadedlyrengaging said last named threads, a central boss o'n said closure projecting Within said body, at least substantially th'eent'ire outer side Wall of said boss being concave to facilitate cleaning,va'th'readed bore extending through said Iboss and said'closure to provide a vent, a valve seat in said bore, a valve slidably received vin said bore, a spring for urging said valve into'engagernent with saidseat, aplug threadedlyv received in the inner end of said bore for retaining said spring and said valve in said bore, and an aperture in -said plug communicating with said bore and the interior of said body to permit flow of 4 air during use of said bottle, said valve closing said bore during periods of non-use.
