i1 Jaen' CARLO@ NVENTOR United States Patent O 3,041,788 CHAMFERING APPARATUS FOR SLAB DOORS Jack Carlow, 4309 Don Carlos Drive, Los Angeles, Calif. Filed May 23, 1960, Ser. No. 30,931 Claims. (Cl. 51 87) This invention relates generally to an apparatus and device for beveling or chamfering the longitudinal, coextensive edges of a slab door and more particularly it relates to a sanding attachment which engages said edges as the door passes between several sets of pressure bonding rollers.
It is a primary object of this invention to remove the four sharp, longitudinal edges of the veneer of a conventional slab door or similar article as these sharp edges tend to damage clothing and bruise and cut the hands of the men who handle these doors while they are being manufactured, shipped, stored and assembled. This device could also be used in any situation where veneer with sharp edges tends to damage the person or clothing of the handler, such as, furniture, toys, store fixtures, ready-cut houses, etc.
Another object of this invention is to provide a sanding device which is of a flexible, self-adjusting and interchangeable nature, thus eliminating the need of spare parts and special tools and jigs. Since the door widths vary in size and material this is a definite advantage.
A further object of this invention is to provide means for varying and adjusting the angle of the chamfer and its width.
An important object of this invention is to provide a device of simple, compact and rugged construction, which can be assembled and disassembled quickly and easily. With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the combinations, arrangements and functional relationships of elements as set forth in the following specication and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a vertical section, partly in elevation, taken on the line 1 1 of FIG. 2.
FIG. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line 2 2 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a perspective, showing the door core and bevelled veneers; FIGS. 3a, 3b and 3c are enlarged detail views.
FIG. 4 is an enlarged detail section taken on the line 4-4 of FIG. 2.
FIG. 5 is a section taken on the line 5 5 of FIG. 6.
FIG. 6 is a section taken on the line 6 6 of FIG. 5.
FIG. 7 is vertical section taken on the line 7 7 of FIG. 5.
FIG. 8 is a section taken on the line 8 8 of FIG. 9.
FIG. 9 is a view taken on the line 9 9 of FIG. l.
FIG. 10 is a view looking in the direction of the arrow 10 of FIG. 9 and FIG. l1 is a section taken on the line 11 11 of FIG. l0.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 10 refers to a base member from which upstands bearings 12, 13, 14 and 15 which carry revolvable spaced, pairs of pressure rollers 16 and 18 mounted on shafts 20 and 22. Positioned about midway between said pairs of rollers are a pair of upstanding bearing plates 24 and 26 having apertures 28 and 30, see F-IG. 5, which serve as bearings for my novel sanding attachments 32. A headed pivot pin 34, see FIGS. 5 and 6, forms a pivot for slotted arm 36 which is swingably mounted and slidably keyed at 37 thereon. Pins 34 are secured to plates 24 and 26 by jam nuts 38.
The motor 40 is provided with a partial shell 42, havp lCC ing a cutout 44 for the insertion of a sanding wheel 46 having mounted thereon a sanding sheet or band 48.
The motors 40 have spacing lugs 47 and a drilled and tapped mounting lug 49.
The shell is cut-out at 50 for the insertion of a preferably welded plate 52 which fastens as at 53, to lug 49 of motor 40. Plate 52 carries a drilled and tapped slidable mounting plate 54. Arm 36 is bifurcated and also grooved at 37 to slide on key 57 of plate 54 and bolt 41 secures arm 36 and plate 54 together in slidable relation.
The shell 42, see FIGS. 9 and 10, carries angular housings 56, see FIGS. 10 and ll, which are welded at a suitable angle to shell 42. Gauge arms or limiting fences 57, provided with rounded contact portions 60, have xed thereto, by means of fasteners 62, dove-tail bars 66.
The housings 56 have upstanding lugs 72 which are drilled and tapped at 74 for the reception of screws 76. Fences 57 have upstanding ears 78 which are drilled and aligned for the reception of the enlarged portions 74a of screws 76, said screws being provided wtih washers 75 abutting shoulders 77 on the enlarged threaded portions 74b of screws 76 to prevent axial movement. Knobs are also provided on the free ends of screws 76 for turning the same.
When the apparatus is in operation, the core of the slab door D with the front and back veneer V assembled, is fed through rollers 18 in the direction of the arrows. The sanding attachments are positioned at the angle desired for the bevel by (see FIG. 6) adjusting the screw 82 which threadedly engages a drilled and tapped hole in arm 84. Arm 84 is integral with and extends at right angles from arm 36, the free end of screw 82 engaging stop lug 86 which is fixed to plates 24 and 26.
The weight of the light motor 40 and greatly increased weight of some of the associated parts causes. the upper apparatus to swivel about pin 34 and force the wheels 46, see FIG. 4, against the veneer V. However the lower apparatus" must be flexibly pulled up against the veneer and to this end arm 84 is provided with a fitting 88 to which is fastened a long coiled spring 90. The free end of spring 90 is connected to pin 92 which is ixed to plate 24. As shown in FIG. l, the lower apparatus is yieldedly forced upward, into contact with veneer V.
As shown in FIG. l0, the sanding wheel is limited by fences 57 which rest upon the veneer V and may be adjusted for deeper or shallower sanding by turning knobs 80 which advance and retract said fences.
It is understood that the right is reserved to make numerous changes in the size, shape, materials and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
