2 Claims. (Cl. 24-3) This invention relates to jewelry and, in particular, to clasps.
One object of this invention is to provide a combined tie clasp and article holder, such as a tie clasp, for holding medical pills or capsules, of such construction that the user will always have immediately available a supply of such pills or capsules for use in regular medication or in an emergency.
Another object is to provide a combined tie clasp and article holder of the foregoing character wherein one arm of the clasp carries'th e article receptacle and the other arm serves as a closure for the receptacle.
Another object is to provide a combined tie clasp and article holder of the foregoing character wherein the arm of the clasp carrying the receptacle is resiliently urged into closing relationship with the other arm of the clasp, yet is moved away from its closed position by a simple pressure of the fingers in opening the clasp.
' Another object is to provide a combined tie clasp and article holder of the foregoing character wherein one arm of the clasp normally serves as a closure for the mouth of the receptacle attached to the other arm of the clasp when the clasp is detached from the necktie or other pieces of clothing which it is intended to grip, yet which presses the latter into closing relationship with the mouth of the receptacle when the clasp is in its usual gripping position.
Another object is to provide a combined tie clasp and article holder of the foregoing character wherein the receptacle is adapted to carry relatively large articles such as pills or capsules, yet wherein the closure arm is narrower than the receptacle mouth so as to avoid excessive width and conspicuousness, but is sufficiently Wide to prevent the escape of pills or capsules from the receptacle when it is detached from the thing which it is otherwise intended to grip.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during the course of the following description of the accompanying drawing, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a front elevation of a mans shirt and necktie with a combined tie clasp and article holder and article holder of FIGURE 1, removed from the necktie and turned around end-for-end with its top uppermost;
FIGURE 3 is a longitudinal central vertical section through the holder of FIGURE 2, shown in its closed position, with pills therein;
FIGURE 4 is a view similar to FIGURE 3, but showing the holder in its open position, ready for filling;
- FIGURE 5 is a cross-section taken along the line 5-5 in FIGURE 2; and
FIGURE 6 is a top plan view of a. modified holder for abnormally wide or abnormally long articles, such as'capsules or tablets.
Hitherto, persons suifering from certain diseases or abnormalities have been obliged to carry constantly with them pills, capsules or the like which are taken either regularly or in case of an emergency. Such persons have often been greatly inconvenienced or even'gravely endangered when such an emergency arose and they could not find the necessary medicaments. Persons suffering from certain heart diseases, for example, are required to carry with them nitroglycerine pills, and diabetics are re- 3,041,692 Patented July 3, 1962 "Ice quired to either undergo frequent injections ofinsulin or carry constantly with them pills or capsules giving equivalent medication. The present invention provides a combined tie clasp and article holder of such a character that when it is attached to a piece of clothing, such as a necktie, dress or the like, it is always immediately available and cannot be misplaced, so that the user has a constant supply of his medicament immediately on hand.
Referring to the drawing in detail, FIGURES 1 to 5 inclusive show a combined tie clasp and article holder, generally designated 10, according to one form of the invention as including an elongated movable arm 12 carrying an elongated cup-shaped receptacle 14 either integral therewith or, as shown, separate therefrom and secured thereto in any suitable way, as by soldering, welding, casting or pressing. The cup-shaped receptacle. 14 is provided with an open-mouthed recess 16'for receiving pills or other articles P (FIGURE 3). As shown in FIGURES 3 to 5, the receptacle 14 is cast in position upon the movable arm 12. t
The movable arm 12 is provided with upstandingears 18 perforated to receive pivot lugs 20 extending inwardly therein from the arms of the' forked end of the reverselybent lower or inner portion 22 of an elongated fixed arm 24. The fixed arm 24 has a combined clasping and outer closure portion 26 for the recess 16 of the receptacle 14, the portion 26 being bent reversely to the inner portion 22 at the tumor bend 28. Coiled around the pivot lugs 20 is a torsion spring 30 (FIGURE 4), one leg of which engages the inner portion 22 of the fixed arm 24 and the other leg engages a handle portion 32 on the movable arm '12, urging the arm portions 22-and 32 away from one another so as normally to urge the mouth or entrance 34 of the receptacle 14 into closing engagement with the closure portion 26.
The modified combined tie clasp and article holder, generally designated 110, shown in FIGURE 6 is generally similar to the holder 10 of FIGURES 1 to 5 inclusive, but differs in suificient detail that it and its component parts are numbered with thesame reference numerals as the holder 10, increased by 100, in order to show the relationship between the corresponding parts or components of the two holders.
The holder of FIGURE 6 is intended for use with capsules, pills or other articles which are longer or wider than can be conveniently received within the recess 16 of the receptacle 14 of the holder 10, yet at the same time the fixed arm 124 has been kept sufliciently narrow to be inconspicuous but sufliciently wide to prevent escape of the capsules or other articles C contained in the cavity or recess 116 of the receptacle 114. The holder 110' of FIGURE 6' is otherwise of similar construction to the holder 10 of FIGURES 1 to 5 inclusive and has the same manner of use and operation.
In the operation of the holder 10 of FIGURES 1 to 5 inclusive or the modified holder 1 10 of FIGURE 6, the
operator grasps the holder between his thumb and fore- 7 finger, pressing the handle portion 32 of the movable arm 12 and the top or closure portion 26 of the fixed arm 24 toward one another into the open position shown in FIGURE 4, winding up the torsion spring 30 while so doing. He then inserts the pills P (FIGURE 3) or capor 110 to an article of clothing, such as a necktie T.

He then releaseshis, grip upon the arm portions 26 and 32 or'the corresponding arm portions of the'holder .110 of FIGURE 6, whereupon the spring 30 urges the necktie port-ions T into closing engagement with the mouth 34 of the recess 16, or 116 against the arm portion 26 or 126 as'an abutment, To withdraw one of the articles, such as a pill or capsule, the user reversesthe proceduredescribed above by againgrasping the arm portions 26 and 32 between his thumb and forefinger, pressing them together to move the arm portion 26 or 126 away from the tie T, whereupon the latter can be pulled away from the holder 14 or 110 or vice versa, and the pill P or capsule C removed and used' j 7 .What I claim is: v
