Description
UNITED STATES PATENT Prion.
BENJAMIN \VATKINS SHERROD, OF BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA.
DUMPlNG-CAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 304,137, dated August 26, 1884.
Application filed June 16, 1884.
I0 (tZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN W. SHER- ROD, of Birmingham, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have invented a new and Improved Dumping-Car, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact de scription.
The object of my invention is to furnish a car for carrying coal, coke, gravel, and other material, so constructed as to permit (lumping of the entire load at either side; and to that end it consists in a car made with a body in V form, the inclined sides being hinged at the top and meeting at the bottom above doubleinclinedslideboards, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a side elevation of a dumpingcar of my improved construction, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same.
The car is mounted on wheels 9, which support the body by suitable frame-work. The body A is composed of ends a a and sides I) I), which are hinged at their upper edges to side rods, 0, that connect the ends a. The lower edges of the sides or doors I) are curved inward, so that they unite when both are closed, thereby forming a tight receptacle with a rounded bottom; or the same result may be obtained by using straight sides, closing together to form a V- Beneath the body A, and fixed to the framework, are slide-boards (I, placed to form a dou- (No model) ble incline, the apex of which is at the center, where the sides I) come together, and these inclines extend out far enough to carry the material beyond the wheels and track. For retaining the sides 6 closed they are provided with pivoted bars 6, that engage notched pieces f, attached on the ends of the car. By this construction and arrangement either door or side can be opened for releasing the load, and the entire load will be discharged when the one door is opened at either side, which is often a great convenience, and if it is desired to divide the load both sides can be released simultaneously. The shape of the body is such that the pressure on the sides will throw them open as soon as the latches are released. I prefer to construct the car of boiler-iron, but do not limit myself in that respect, nor to the devices described for fastening the hinged sides. The invention is applicable to any dumping-vehicle as well as a railroadcar.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. A dumping-car body made with inclined sides hinged at the top, and formed to close together at their lower edges, substantially as described.
2. In a dumping-car, the double-inclined slide-boards (I, combined with the body A, having inclined sides or doors I) hung close together above the slide-boards, substantial] y as described.
BENJAMIN WATKINS SHERROD.
