LETTER-FILE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 303,519, dated August 12,1884.
Application filed June 30, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN M. JENKINS, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Combined Letter and 5 Postal File, of which the following is a speci fication.
My invention is an improvement in those devices for reception and classification of papers which consist of a series of expansible 1o pockets formed of numerous rigid or semirigid partitions that are united at their edges by flexible membranes or gussets; and my improvement consists in the provision near the mouth of each pocket of a smaller pouch or I 5 pocket of size suitable for holding such rela tively small articles as folded letters and postal and other cards.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective View, and Fig. 2 a transverse 20 section, of the preferred form of my improvement. Figs. 3 and 4 represent slightly different forms of files embodying my improvement.
A B B constitute the back and the two lids 2 5 0r flaps of a rigid or semi-rigid cover of a portfolio or paper-file. Securely fastened to said lids B B are the sides C C and bottom 0', of a creased and flexible bag, membrane, or gusset, C C- C, which is, by rigid or semi- 0 rigid boards or partitions D, dividedinto any desired number of compartments or pockets E. Securely attached by its bottom and side edges to each partition near the bag-mouth is a lesser pocket, F, for reception of postal and other 3 5 cards, folded letters, and other papers of such like small dimensions. By this means such relatively small packages and paper, which, if
thrown in with the rest, would inconveniently' choke and distend the file at its smallest part, occupy the upper portions, where there is more 0 room and where they are more accessible.
My improvement,w11ile chiefly intended for and most signally applicable to files of the kind shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is also applicable to other forms, as illustrated in Fig. 3, 45
which shows such pockets F applied to an accordion? form of file, and in Fig. 4, which shows such pockets F applied to a pack of separable boards or leaves capable of being stitched, impaled, or otherwise secured to one 0 another.
Each compartment may be marked with any customary or suitable index-letters, G, as shown, for example, in Fig. 1.
Each file or folio may be furnished with 55, suitabletie, H, as in Figs. 1 and 2, or with a flap, J, as shown in Fig. 3.
The gussets may either be formed of a different fabric from the partition, or lhe gore or gusset between each two consecutive par 60 titions may be simply a part or prolongation of one of them and be pasted to the other.
I claim as new and of my invention- The combined letter and postalfile, consisting of cover A B B, membrane C C C, par- 6 titions D, and the supplementary lesser pockets F, located near the mouths of the larger or principal compartments, as set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
JOHN M. JENKINS.
